Title: The old forum is back
Post by: Dungeon Master on February 01, 2009, 11:53:56 AM
Hi everyone

I did a lot of reading, learning about mySQL databases and experimenting over the last 24 hours, and I am pleased to announce that the old forum is back. Access here (http://www.good-music-guide.com/forum).

For those of you who don't know, this forum was originally located at www.good-music-guide.com/forum, but the database got corrupted in an upgrade and became unusable back in 2007. The data was still there, but the forum software couldn't access it.

I have managed to resurrect the old forum - it will be a read-only archive. You cannot post or reply to any existing posts there. You are welcome to cut-and-paste any posts you think worthy to the new forum here to continue the discussions.

Be careful - some of you with usernames on both forums - don't get them mixed up - the two fora look very similar. Best not to login to the old forum at all. You should be able to read all the posts without logging in.

enjoy!

Cheers
Rob

P.S. Please report any bugs as a reply here.

There shouldn't be any rush. As long as we do not post or upgrade to fiddle, the old forum should be stable and secure. It should last in perpetuity.

Success at last! Many thanks, Rob, for your efforts!  8)
I'm sure all the old-forum material will spur a new wave of discussions and renewed insights here. Just one thing, though: it seems we can't log into our profiles in order to browse our past messages en masse, but maybe we're not supposed to for technical reasons?

I have disabled many of the features of the forum to prevent any changes to the database and therefore keep the system stable.

Let me add my thanks for this, Rob.  There were several threads on the old forum that I'd like to revisit, though if I spend much time there I suspect I'll miss Chris and Rena and Owlice and Benji and Nigel and one or two others even more than I already do.  They were powerful attractions when I first joined.  Fortunately there are still several other attractions from those days participating here, and quite a few others who've joined since.  And occasionally one of the old timers puts in an appearance--nice to see Mark (diegobueono) from time to time, for instance.

But...damn!...I was looking forward to Chris's exposition of Sibelius's 5th on that old series of threads devoted to careful consideration of one work--and Benji's Rautavaara one, too!  Too bad that stuff got derailed by the psychopathic egos who crawl out from under their rocks when the planets get misaligned.

Go to a particular board, and click on the top bar "started by". Now the threads will be listed alphabetically by name of the members who started them.

Check out THIS THREAD (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,284.0.html) in the current forum; one that I started and linked to composers in the 'old' forum - of course, the links stopped working, but after your post, I just tried to link a few of the composers and seem to work - would be quite interested in others checking this out - might be a consideration for a pinned thread if access to these many old threads is now possible - just a suggestion?   :D

Just wanted to add my thanks to Rob for bringing back the old forum!   :-*

I spent a couple of hours last night reading through just a portion of the Fighting Over Chopin (http://www.good-music-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,38.0.html) thread.  Lots of great info there (and elsewhere), and I'm appreciating it at a much higher level than when I first checked it out 5 or so years ago (much classical listening under the bridge).  I actually printed it out at work -- 115 pages, with miniscule margins and type smaller than the phonebook!  Now that's a thread!

The old forum (http://www.good-music-guide.com/forum) will be deleted at the end of February 2013.

GMG is consuming vast amounts of server space, and my logs indicate that fewer than 1% of all traffic is to the old forum. Deleting the old forum will save me a few GB in hard drive space on the server, and help hold back an upgrade to a more expensive hosting plan for many months.

If you have any posts or threads you want to preserve from the old forum, please do so in the next 2 weeks.

cheers

Rob, is there a way that all of the old forum can be downloaded in a format where all the structure is preserved and which can be re-deployed at a later time, when you can afford more space? If it's only a few GB, it can find a space in almost any local hard-drive, no?
Title: Re: The old forum is back
Post by: Dungeon Master on February 17, 2013, 01:15:06 AM
Yes, the entire forum can be downloaded and archived as a mySQL database. It can then be redeployed whenever.

However, given than it receives very little traffic, I am not sure what value it would have to do so.

This is a bit short notice - would you consider a short reprieve, of say, one more month? :)

Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

Just reporting this. I know that Rob has got more important things to deal with.

If and when it's back, I hope you can spare some time to put up links to (some or all of) those threads here (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,21499.0.html). I think our preferences in music overlaps here and there occasionally. :)

Tried it again, but I still can't reach it. Same connection error.

Let's just wait and see, and be hopeful. 0:)

No changes, alas.
I'm afraid that saving some interesting stuff won't be possible anymore.

Same here, it seems our reprive has been shortened by technical issues... :(

I'd love to, but it's almost impossible (not to say useless).
It's back on air now, but just for 2 days and I will hardly have the time to check it out, because of Easter and other things.
Besides that, the forum will be gone from April 1st, so .... my guess is that anyone who still wants some bits of the old board has to run through it by himself/herself.

A reprieve - I'll let the old forum stay indefinitely for now.

The cause of the previous server crash had nothing to do with the old forum taking up much HD space, so I'll let it stay.

How long? I don't know, but if and when I decide to bin it, I will give plenty of notice.

For now, enjoy.

That's great news, thanks very much Rob .... despite my words above, I just did a dozen of hasty recommendations in the salvaging stuff thread, and of course that thread itself still has its worth, even without the closing 'danger' ....

Happy Easter to all of you! :)
