Title: If you have a new username...
Post by: Greta on April 10, 2007, 05:31:58 AM
I thought it would be helpful to have a thread for those who have a new username now to introduce who they were formerly known as at the old GMG, so we can keep track of who's who. (Unless you wish to remain anonymous...) ;)

As for myself, I was "gab1279" at the old forum, those were my initials, and my new username is my real first name.

Handy, because now I don't have to sign my posts anymore!  :D

What's the significance of 1279?

What's the significance of 1279?

Clearly, D Minor, that is the year when the Estonian town of Haapsalu was founded!

Karl, it's far from clear.

I have it on good authority that Greta's use of 1279 relates to the founding of the stone Chapel at Dethick, dedicated to St. John and founded in 1279 by Geffrey Dethick and Thomas Prior of Felley, in Nottinghamshire.1

Geez, I thought 1279 was the birth year!  ;D Now I don't have to treat you with the kind of courtesy I usually offer elderly members!

Me, I have always been SpringRite. (I was SpringLeft from about two days, after which I sprung right back!)

I've been known variously as:

shadowritten - name of my first freelance copywriting venture
Mark Antony Owen - I'm sure I used this for a while: my real, full name
~ M A O ~ - no, not the Chinese ... ;D
~ M a r k ~ - had this one for quite a while, because the one I have now wasn't free

I've also popped back under at least two other names during a long period (about three months) when I was supposedly 'on a break' from this place. But I never revealed who I was (except to a couple of folks here), and I deleted those accounts fairly soon after creating them.

Yeah, I know. I can be odd at times. :)

The answer lies in the "What are you listening to?" thread, Mark. You'll have to dig a couple of pages back, though. And some of the items are already missing - removed by the person who posted them.

My favorite "chandler" passage is in one of the Bertie and Jeeves stories, where Bertie is at some torturous provincial entertainment, and someone else who is standing at the back looks to him like a corn chandler, and a corn chandler who has "had a full morning, chandling the corn" . . . .

It's all a result of the surreptitious return of Luke, which Karl celebrated a few days ago, becoming leggiero... The rest is history.

But I'll be returning to being Jezetha soon(-ish)...

Hahaha! That episode is what I was thinking of when I decided to become Pam, actually. Specifically the line before she pulls out the chainsaw, where she says something like, "That was weird, right? That was just a transition so that you'll know that I am giving the rest of the presentation!"  ;D

I thought this last episode was funny compared to how it's been recently. I talked to someone today who only watched the first 20 minutes and got bored and turned it off.  ::)

Almost as funny is when they try to do Kelley's birthday party. She gets to sleep under a table in another room and says she is so excited she can't sleep. Then, when Dwight comes and wakes her up an hour later by banging on some pots, the camera zooms up to a banner on the wall, obviously designed by Dwight. It's white, with black text in all caps, reading- "IT IS YOUR BIRTHDAY."

When they show off Dwight's personality in certain ways (like the beginning of a lot of the shows), it totally makes the show- him and Michael, actually. If it weren't for them, there'd be no show.

Well, Inferior Brian, that was surely an interesting one- and it was all Angela's fault, really.
 I wonder what'll happen next...
Andy already tried with some lady in I think, the last episode. The funny part was when he leads her to her car and tries to kiss her- she's like, "What the hell?" but trying to be non-confrontational, so it came out sort of weird. Then, he gets embarassed and apologizes. A minute or so later, they say they completely lose the client.  :-X   :D ;D

The American version of 'The Office', a straight-faced sitcom which is basically about a bunch of morons, jerks and otherwise strange people who work in an office. The humor is either pretentiously low-brow* and mildly annoying, or funny. It depends on what day you tune in and what makes you laugh.

Oh right! I hate the UK version (I can't stand Ricky Gervais), but I do like Steve Carroll so I'd be more likely to enjoy the US version no doubt. I shall investigate!

No.  However, this is a series and I believe the 6th in it (they did not have any of the earlier ones), but after a few chapters I was hooked.  I do not let that bother me too much as the "arc" seems fairly simple and I can backtrack after this one.  Dude can write, Dave.

Holy cow! I was wondering who this sackbut guy was (especially after a couple of clever ripostes). There should be a week or two where both names are shown so members can transition! I had to look up sackbut, by the way, and I had no idea it referred to trombones and such - so your name change has been educational for me.

If I got rid of my Brian avatar, now that would be truly revolutionary. Most regulars here know my real name. So - chucking 'Jezetha' is no big deal for me.

Hi David. Glad you're telling me, I wouldn't have known you from this new username ! Haven't been around for a while, what's the log out issues ?

We have been under attack from a Legion of Spambots. They spent hours at a time trying to crack user names and passwords so they could hijack parts of the web page. It was a web-wide phenomenon. So many of us have changed our screen names so they are different from the actual user name that one logs in with. Thus, there is no way that they can hit a correct combination since the name they see is wrong. Rob has now fixed it, but only after the majority adopted new names. :)

Reflecting both a recent GMG trend and my recently developed passion for Belcanto, here is yours truly Eusebius formerly Florestan turned count Rodolfo, a character from Bellini's La Sonnambula who sings one of the most ravishingly beautiful arias I know: Vi ravviso, o luoghi ameni.

The new avatar pictures Ezio Pinza (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ezio_Pinza) , (one of) the greatest basso cantante of the 20th century. His rendition seems to be missing on Youtube, but here is the one with his rival Tancredi Pasero (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tancredi_Pasero).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU8YrzITzZs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU8YrzITzZs)

Actually immediately following this aria there is another one, equally delightful. Here is Ferruccio Furlanetto singing them both.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7GJGdQPZLg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7GJGdQPZLg)

So, besides a baron (Scarpia) there's now also a count. Anyone else cares to join the noblity rank?  :)

This is fantastic, everyone changes their name and unless you study this thread you have no idea who is who.  I predict this will reduce bad feeling, afterall how can you get annoyed with someone when you have no idea who they are.  I suggest the management install a subroutine that automatically assigns you a new name for every post, then it will be total bliss here.  Maybe it can automatically generate the obligatory post in this thread, "Hi, I've changed my name from SchubertNut to BartokFan because now I like Bartok!"  Almost as good as being on Prosac.

Off topic: Wouldn´t Antonio Mercante  or Comerciante sound (and read) more consistent?

If consistency were a goal, yes, indeed. It would be something like "Antonio Mercante" in Italian and "Antonio Mercader" in Spanish. But the relationship with Ton Koopman's name would be something cryptic. A day in 2007 when I filled the register on this board, I was listening to some cantata performed by Koopman and his musicians (the BWV 21?) and it was almost a joke to adopt the nickname "Antoine Marchand" the translation of "Ton Koopman" in French and name of his own label. But I never liked that French "Antoine", so to homage to Antonio Vivaldi I changed my "Antoine" for the Italian (and coincidentally Spanish) "Antonio"... And now I have adopted "Toñito": the affectionate diminutive of Antonio in Spanish.   ;D

BTW, I've always wondered why the tilde on "n" when followed by an "i". What difference does it make in sound?
It really strikes me as odd to write "Antonio" instead of "Antoño", while writing "Toñito" instead of "Tonito".  ??? Could you please illuminate me?

ton-YI-to...

ñ = ny

And in this case the accent is on the y part of the sound. Both of the 'o's' sound as o.   :)

For Antonio, the two vowels do have distinct identity; in the proposed Antoño (which doth possess an uncanny odd apparition of orthography), there is no distinct i but the n is (alla russa) "jotated."  A comparable difference is in the first person nominative pronoun in Italian and Spanish respectively, io (which, although at times elided in speech, is two vowels) and yo (with only one full vowel).

In English, although not formally reflected in spelling (so often historic rather than functional in this language), there is a different d sound in do's and dues, which is comparable to the difference in Russian between hard and softened consonants.  But this distinction is apt to disappear in large stretches of the Colonies . . . .

Wow, I hadn't thought there was a difference between "do's" and "dues." In England-English, "t" is pronounced differently from our American "t" - but that's neither here nor there...

Wow, I hadn't thought there was a difference between "do's" and "dues."

Which I guess is as simple a matter as that you've never heard it done. Dues and dews would be the same, to be sure.  Slight difference in the s sound in sooth and suit, likewise.  In the t in tooth and Tuesday.  Still probably universal in the English use, specific locale notwithstanding, is the p in poor and pure, the m in moon and mute . . . "Jotation" is still "built into" the vowel U, hence our pronunciation of that vowel's "name," a vowel with in most Europeans languages is call oo ; )

Yes, "ñ" is an individual letter in Spanish. I think a good exercise would be to use the Google translator and to hear these usual words:

pequeño = small

añadir = to add

dañino = harmful

Florestan,

I don't know why we say "Toño" or "Toñito" in Spanish and not "Tonio" or "Tonito", but I believe it's principally one of those arbitrary things of every language.

The point about the d in dues and do's is that the letter itself is phoneme, the smallest unit of sound that is not considered necessary to subdivide by speakers of a language. Of course, those who study linguistics can perceive fine differences as in My Fair Lady where the professor hears 26 variations of one vowel on a recording.

I found that this is the problem in trying to speak other languages that have other differentiations in phonemes. A phrase or word may sound right to an English speaker but elicit a shrug of the shoulders in the hearer. This is also true the other way around.

BTW, I think that dews would have a little more w than oo in the sound...

Principally this name is a joke, but anyway your question is interesting. Actually, Spanish and other Romance languages use diminutives in way that I don't know if it's so easy in languages of Germanic root. I mean in Spanish I can say "Juanito" (dear little John), Pedrito (dear little Peter) and so, as just one word and affectionate treatment for adults which I don't know if it happens that easily, for instance, in English, where the affectionate names frequently require a different word: John/Jack; William/Bill and so.  :)

Dutch is full of diminutives, even with adverbs. Often a -tje(s) or -pje(s) or -je is appended. Take the word 'even' (for a moment) - if you want it to denote an even shorter period of time, you make it 'eventjes'!

Yes, same meaning, but that's regular - a noun with a suffix. In Dutch you can stick a diminutive to a word like 'briefly' or 'calm'.

"La princesa estaba sentadita en su silla". Here the diminutive is put in the verb (to sit down) to express a sort of tenderness.

In English (or at least the American version)  -ie or -ey or -y can be used.  So John can become Johnnie or Jonnie or Johnny or Jonny, and Jack (which can be used as a formal first name on its own) can become Jackie.  Thus, Johnny Carson and Jackie Robinson.
Similar with William/Bill and Robert/Bob.  ( I have no idea why the diminutives can start with B in those cases).

I used to have some Cuban neighbors who talked about drinking Juanito Camarero Negro (Johnnie Walker Black).

That's like shooting fish in a barrel.

In answer to your question:  my grandfather was from Kishinev.  Or what they used to call Kishinev.   Back in his day it was in Bessarabia. Of course, they had a tsar then.  Things are a little different now.  Now it's Moldava and I can never remember the new spelling.  Cusinau?   (and is or is not Moldavian a form of Romanian?)

At any rate, "kish(i)nevi" would be the approximate Hebrew way of saying "from Kishinev" or "Kishiveian".

The Romanian spelling is Chișinău and the pronunciation is kiʃiˈnəw. And yes, Moldavian is actually Romanian.

The "taking names" part sounds to me like it would have originated in high school, the part of life where "taking names" is a common occurance and presented as a big deal (which it's not, in relation to kicking ass, hence the delightful irony). Of course, plenty of kids go pretty much from school into the military so that makes sense.

Interesting... the relationship between (our) name and thing itself (ourselves).

This recalls me an essay that I read some time ago, about which is the true name of God (I mean the God of Jews, the Christian God). As this name couldn't be pronounced, just the consonants were written: YHVH (tetragrammaton). Mysteriously, it also recalled me this movie quote: "It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna."

I had to "unfriend" someone for much the same reason, though if it had been a matter of religious belief, that would at least have been family-friendly, I suppose . . . .

As much as anything else it was the smugness of the tone that got to me. I am not anti-faith; just anti-pushing it in relentless fashion no matter how jolly the tone is.

Thought I'd drop in with my friends - brothers Messrs (Bill and Jack) Hidden, and their cousin Mr (Daniel) Guests - to see why everybody is called something different now - I mean, different but not so different, if you get me. There is. The site was attacked by bots (or something) that caused people to be logged out (even if they had just logged in). One of the sugegstions from Rob was to make sure the userid and username were different. This set off a number of name changes. It has settled down for the most part, though there are a select few who seem to enjoy the shedding of skins!  ;D

Aha!!!! Thanks. I'd wondered if I'd encountered something weird like that - I think I've ticked the box to say keep me logged in, and then the next day I find I'm not, but I thought that was just me growing senile and thinking I've done things when really I haven't. So to fix that I have to call myself Elgarianissimus or something? Hmmm.

But seriously - one thing Lucas tends to do for sci-fi names is mangle sounds so that they superficially resemble an existing language. Obi Wan is cod Japanese (the plot of ep.4 was influenced by Kurasawa's The Hidden Fortress, and the Jedi costume and fighting style are samurai-based). The above mentioned Qymaen jai Sheelal is pseudo Arabic.

My interest is especially piqued because while talking a walk on Hollywood (FL)'s Broadwalk (meaning the beachside promenade that runs for several miles along the beach and is filled with little restaurants, motels, condos, etc. on the non-sand side) I noticed a place advertising itself with a flamboyant frescoed sign--a B&B with spa that called itself (I kid you not) "Ataraxia".

Welcome back Dave, your new name is one of those interesting words that takes longer to sound out than the look of it. It would be quite an odd word to use for commercial purposes, as many people would not be sure how to pronounce it. Perhaps the B&B is catering to a niche market.

John of Clydebank is now unfashionable.  Reasons:  It is far too long a screen name for anyone to be bothered typing it all in, and the fury of another John prompted him to call me just "Clydebank".  In honour of my friend Cato, a Latin expert and brilliant writer of what is clearly American Lierature at its best, I have decided to shorten my screen name to the Latin equivalent of a Scottish guy called John.  Therefore, my new screen name is: Jockus.   ???

I do too. It looks to me like Jockus is the Scottish-Latin word for Jackass. (No offense meant, John of Clydebank née Glasgow. It's simply an automatic association.)

Yeah.
Associations.

From Smallberries to Strawberries.
From Strawberries to Beatles.
(It's a music forum, is it not?)

So:
What about John Lenoui?
You know, John LenNON is dead.

Is that nice?

NON. (French.)

John of GMG is, on the contrary, despite his sick mucous, very much alive, yes?

OUI. (French.)

There you have it: John Lenoui.

I must say, I am very happy with my new avatar. I think it says something profound about life, or cats, or something. It's a cropped lolcat image - the caption said "EPIC FAIL". I choose to believe it was not 'shopped.
