Just learned that the non-canonical Gospel of Mary Magdalene has also previously inspired an opera, by Mark Adamo in 2013. I believe the movie is also a rather free interpretation of it.

This is arrangements for saxophone quartet, cello, and piano of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations, a Vivaldi concerto, the Falla Canciones, and the Rhapsody in Blue. It could sell dozens of copies.

Quote from: Todd on March 17, 2023, 05:55:04 AMI wonder if the composer was inspired by the flick Mary Magdalene. This seems like a musical equivalent to that.

Progressive and explicitly femimist Christian thinking has been upgrading the Magdalen's status for some time. As the first actual witness to the Resurrection--which she then tells the Apostles about--she's been titled (by the Catholic Church, as an official Catholic thing) Apostle to the Apostles.
(Jesus Christ Superstar was an early member of that trend.)

So both movie and composer might be reacting to that independently.

Amazon.de reports that "Solti in Europe," the 45 CD, 2 DVD box featuring Solti's orchestral recordings from Berlin, Vienna, Amsterdam, etc., has now been pushed back to December.

Just received: a press release, in my personal email box, for a "symphonic fantasy for viola and orchestra in 15 movements." That is a lot of movements!

Quote from: Brian on March 17, 2023, 05:35:53 AMThe cover spelling of the ensemble has sent me down a Wiki rabbit hole. Previous recordings of this orchestra have credited it as the Aarhus Sinfonietta. It turns out that the official spelling of the city changed from Århus to Aarhus in 2011. So if the orchestra is changing its spelling in the reverse direction, it is going against the historical grain. City institutions are still allowed to use the old spelling (and apparently the local newspaper does).

Here is a blog post in Danish about the controversy.

Yes, it's weird that I'm more interested in this than in the fact of a new oratorio celebrating Mary Magdalene  ;D

You left out how the pre-2011 spelling was only the spelling from 1948. Various things happened to Danish spelling in 1948 that, to my mind, were designed to highlight that Danish was Not German.
I am now working on a discography of the works of Vagn Holmboe. Please visit and also contribute!

Maybe it's time to get my head round this challenging composer. I know he's a mover and shaker in the world of notation, that he uses extremely extended techniques. Does it make poetry . . . well judging by the first five minutes of the first track here, yes it does.

There's a teaser on spotify, I will listen to the whole album if I don't have to buy it.

A fantastic cover.

That might just be in my head but it looks like artists featured on chamber music covers look relaxed and playful and artists featured on orchestral music covers look as serious as a heart attack.

I really hope CPO will also record his Symphony No. 2 in B minor, op. 80 in due time.

I didn't know that Castelnuovo-Tedesco wrote string quartets.

The two tracks currently streaming show that this is excellent music well recorded, the Huelgas sound captured.

That has got to be one of the cushiest music director gigs around.  One would think it better to bring back veterans of the festival as newbies may end up distracted by visiting the two national parks nearby, squandering precious practice time.
