Part of the tragedy of the Palestinians is that they have essentially no international support for a good reason: they've no wealth, they've no power, so they've no rights.

Bantock: Helena Variations

These Hyperion recordings are the best things record labels have made for this composer so far.

CD 36

Shostakovich
Symphony № 5 in d minor, Op. 47

Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York (New York Philharmonic)
recorded 1 Dec 1952

This was excellent. I realized that, as familiar as I am with the piece, and as many recordings as I've listened to over the years, I don't have "a favorite" recording which I like above others. I listen to each recording with ears unencumbered by that burden. Just a thought which crossed my mind as I was especially enjoying the Largo.

CD 32

Louis Moreau Gottschalk

Cakewalk—Ballet Suite (Adapted and Orchestrated by Hershy Kay)
The Phila. Orchestra
Eugene Ormandy
recorded 17 Feb 1952

With a nod to Clement Clarke Moore, I enjoyed this almost in spite of myself. I guess I managed to shed an inclination to be snobby at Gottschalk's expense, and I find it good light music, ranging from American music-hall types and some numbers which made me think of von Suppé

Franck: Rédemption

My girlfriend liked this more than I did. There is some good music in there, but I didn't care much for the text or the spoken parts.

Pettersson: Symphony No. 7 (Dorati/Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra).  Wonderfully beautiful music hiding in the darkness.

Quote from: Brian on February 07, 2023, 10:27:16 AMThe Andsnes is next-level. If Kahanek presents the Poetic Tone Pictures as great salon music, Andsnes presents it as great music, period. It's one of those performances that makes you think a B-tier piece was an A-lister all along.

Yes, the Andsnes is very good indeed.

Quote from: Løvfald on February 07, 2023, 01:07:34 PMIt's a bleak, dark, depressing, disquieting work, with some tinges of Schnittke, perhaps. Even though this is not something I'd like to listen to with any regularity, I found the whole thing surprisingly arresting and original in its combination of forces.
Thanks Cesar  :)

I saw on JPC de all the recordings of this ensemble for a very low price, so if you like them I would suggest a visit. I am not greatly exited by what these English ensembles, choirs are doing.

A useful free disc with BBC Music Magazine, that plugged a couple of gaps in my library. Recordings from 2000, 2001 and 2004.

This is one hell of a swan song for Orlando Consort - just amazing singing really, monophonic, strophic, a cappella, long and in a dead language. But they really bring it to life.

This is a very relaxed, genial and lyrical rendition. Simon's tempi are on the broad side, allowing the music to flow like honey and unfold like a blossoming rose. In tutti, though, he delivers the required amount of power and speed. Slatkin and the SLSO provide a clear and balanced accompaniment which is revelatory: I heard things, especially in the woodwinds, which I didn't hear, or didn't hear as clear, in any other performance. The "All by Myself" section was absolutely magical in this respect. The sound, though not quite SOTA, is nevertheless very good. This is a corker of a Rach 2 performance and it's joined my top tier, alongside Earl Wild / Horenstein / Royal PO and Ashkenazy / Haitink / Concertgebouw.

Wind Octet (maiden listen)

An extremely beautiful and engaging work, tuneful, colorful and amiable. Sunshine music. Reinecke is my second major discovery this year, after Rota.

I generally share your reservations, but for me it really depends on the ensemble and the repertoire (preferably their home turf). This recording I would recommend.
