Quote from: SonicMan46 on January 23, 2023, 08:19:33 AMThanks Brian - I also have a number of these 'double jewel boxes' that can hold 4 to 6 discs (the Brautigam Mozart KB sonatas has six) - the 5 or 6 disc containers will have the flip-out on the front and back outsides.  Yep, Distler in link given, several websites, and the number I own all point to 5; several of these discs are 52 & 56 minutes so I guess MDG could have put the recordings on 4 discs but usually the originals are just boxed up.  Dave
One of the shortcomings of Hurwitz's new YouTube reviews approach is a spottier approach to fact-checking. Since he is speaking extemporaneously from memory, mistakes or even simple verbal slips are likelier to happen. I watched one a couple weeks ago where he said "pianist" instead of "violinist" about five times.

That means he is three times more accurate than the typical YouTuber.

Quote from: Brian on January 23, 2023, 07:52:50 AMIt's like a hybrid of the old double jewel boxes with the new slim 2CD jewel cases used by labels like Hyperion.
I have CDs with cases like that from the early 2000s... Can we really call anything that has been around for over 20 years 'new'? ;)

Hans Holbein

I occasionally hate-watch Hurwitz videos, especially if he is talking about a particular interest of mine. In his video on the Busoni piano concerto, he struggles with pronunciations; has no idea what the movements are called and spends a good bit of time consulting a CD case to find them out; states that there are only "nine or ten" recordings of the concerto (there are at least 18 by my count); and has no idea what label his top pick for the piece is on.

And how many of those nine or ten or 18 recordings does he mention specifically? Four. (Ogdon, Hamelin, Ohlsson, and Gerstein.) I strongly suspect those are the only four he's heard, otherwise he would have at least alluded to some others.

JBS

Anyone have any opinions on these two?

There's another CD (at least) in this cycle with Symphonies 1,4, and 6, but Arkivmusic only has these two on sale.

I'd say that is the biggest bias in all recommendations: people buy what is recommended and then recommend it because that is what they know. You cannot recommend or compare what you haven't heard.

And yet, if I make a recommendation out of the Shostakovich op.87 recordings, where I've heard 17 of the available recordings so far... I would quite happily only spend time mentioning the 5 or so I think are worth mentioning.

And probably Nikolayeva just because she's so famous in that work.

But I don't think anyone in life generally, when asked for a recommendation of something, whether a film or TV show or a business, then spontaneously mentions every unrecommended experience that they've had. Unless asked about specific experiences or prompted somehow, it's a waste of time.
I am now working on a discography of the works of Vagn Holmboe. Please visit and also contribute!

Yes, I always wonder how many interpretations people have heard when they enthusiastically recommend a particular recording as being the best. As a completist in areas of my particular interest, I always find it difficult to recommend just one or two recordings like this. But it must also be said that it is a different attitude to recommend a few recordings as the only  ones you must have compared to recommending a good recording as supplementary listening.

I was curious about this recording as well, but decided against buying it because the excerpts on the hyperion website didn't sound too tempting. But maybe I just wasn't in the mood for Schubert.

I don't think it's a very interesting recording. I think to some extent we've been spoilt by his Faure, where he clearly was inspired and in his element. Some people would say the same about the Debussy. The one I'd love to hear is this

I quite like all the symphonies I've heard, but haven't done a deep dive yet or listened to them that much outside background listening.

Stylistic points of comparison include Schoenberg, Bartók and Skalkottas but Ķeniņš is no worse for being approximately fifty years out of date.

I streamed Symphony No. 2 last night and thought it was fantastic.

Thanks to both of you. Since I posted my question I found some of them on Youtube, and decided he's just not my thing.

The comparison to Skalkottas is very true.

I guess we're talking the gnarlier Skalkottas works and not the Greek Dances

Anyone familiar with these relatively recent ballet boxes?  :)  As if I need another one, though I love ballet music.  ;D

If I were to get one of the ballet boxes, I might lean towards the red one (Warner set).  Has more stuff that I do not have.
