Quote from: Spotted Horses on Today at 10:07:14 AMI can't imagine I will ever order from jpc again. They shipped fast to the U.S. by DHL, and the tracking number even told me when the commercial flight carrying my package landed in Los Angeles. But it is well into the third week sitting in U.S. Customs. Exasperating! I should have just ordered from amazon and paid double the price.
Sorry to hear that it's taking so long.  Were any of them gifts?  I've never had problems ordering from European companies before and it sounds like it's an issue with our customs.  It's been a while, but in the past, all have arrived and been delivered quite quickly.  Perhaps a case of not enough workers at the US Customs--at least in the LA area?  If not a gift or needed for research, composing, etc., why not just take a deep breath and listen to what you do have and/or streaming?  :)

Quote from: Florestan on Today at 07:30:40 AMI am not against kids reading the classics (I myself read a lot of them as a kid, even if for many of them real understanding came only when re-reading them later in life), I am against kids being forced to read them in school and being graded for that.

There is a spectrum though.  In high school, teachers usually expose students to short, easier reads like The Great Gatsby and not some gigantic Russian doorstop (at least in the US, it looks like the Ukraine is a different story).

Continuing with Henze's symphonies, the 1st for chamber orchestra was really compelling:

Hans Werner Henze
Symphony No.2

Marek Janowski & Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin

Quote from: Florestan on April 13, 2024, 03:41:47 AMJoseph Conrad was published in Romanian translation in the 1960s: Lord Jim, Heart of Darkness, Nostromo. He's one of my favorite writers, a truly unique style and a sumptuous use of English, despite him being Polish.

Yes, Conrad wrote beautiful English prose. He and Vladimir Nabokov stand out in that regard for me, despite English not having been their first language.

The Diner / Re: Last Movie You Watched

For fans of the Green Book (2018) - won Best Picture Oscar - own as Amazon UHD streamer and have watched at least 4 times (even setup a Spotify playlist of Don Shirley) - BUT was wondering last night if there were any documentary shows about the real Green Book and found the two at the bottom. A 50+ min documentary called The Green Book - Guide to Freedom on Amazon Prime Video for $3+ HD purchase - was made about the same time as the film although the producers were unaware of the movie's production.

And The Musician's Green Book - An Enduring Legacy, a one-hour PBS special (free if a PBS member) - a great jazzy band and numerous performances, so a mixture of history and personal discussion of the days of the 'Green Book' (more below), mixed with entertainment from the participants.  Dave

QuoteCelebrate the history and experiences of African American musicians, navigating segregation, while creating the foundation of Jazz, R&B and Soul. These were difficult and often dangerous times — even for renowned artists like Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Little Richard, and Sam Cooke. Like many Black Americans, they relied on Victor Hugo Green's Negro Travelers' Green Book, a directory of lodging, restaurants, and services where African Americans were safe and welcomed. Green's growing "pamphlet" created a network of friends, family and fans... that became The Green Book. (Source)

Listened to some of the live performances today from the Karl Henning ensemble.  Alas, there was a combo of a bit of a weird echo plus couldn't hear the performers' comments about the works very well.  :(

Liked that they opened up with the fuchsia work which I quite enjoy.  :)

This morning I pulled out my 16 or so discs of:

Nielsen, Carl (1865-1931) - Clarinet Works w/ David Shifrin; Piano Solo w/ Martin Roscoe; and String Quartets w/ the Oslo SQ - looked at plenty of reviews (attached for the interested) - the piano performances have a lot of competition, so may go to Spotify plus any comments; the SQs are well reviewed and other offerings exist.  Next up the Symphonies - Dave
