Wow, its lagging now big time. When I click on an email link, I get a black screen first, and 4 or 5 seconds later the page appears. Posting takes even longer.....

HUNGARIAN SERENADE.

This is by all means an interesting disc, well presented and recorded. Hungarian flavour pur sang! The combination of composers is not an recurring event in music like this, so this modern interpretation is more than welcome. Anyways very enjoyable and recommended.

I read Portrait some months ago. A magnificent book though a trifle unbalanced. I enjoyed the latter half more.

Speaking of James, I started to read The Wings of The Dove recently while visiting a library. Blown away by the very first chapter already.

Well I await your findings before I plunge into it, for I am not a great favourite of piano concertos, but then again, I like the music of Lloyd ;D

Quote from: Brian on April 17, 2024, 07:04:42 AMI'm actually going to see this symphony live next month! Conductor Daniele Rustioni is bringing it to Dallas for what must surely be the Texas premiere. I have only heard it one time (on streaming, when the symphony announced its concert programs, to see if I wanted to go).

You lucky dog! I'm sure that'll be impressive. Here in Japan, I'm finally going to see my first concert in 3 years--but I expect you'll get the better show...

"De Profundis" is certainly a masterpiece but the South Bohemian Suite is not a patch on the Slovak Suite, I'm afraid. My own experience in general would tend to agree with "most sources".

Most sources seem to suggest that Novak's greatest works were all composed early on in his composing career. I disagree as the South Bohemian Suite  and the darkly moving 'De Profundis' were composed late on in his career - both being influenced by political events (Hitler's threat to Czechoslovakia and ultimately the German occupation of the Czech lands).
