Besides that I can't think of many jazz documentaries I call much better than just okay. Maybe the one on Chet Baker called "Lets Get Lost". Or the one on Monk called "Straight, No Chaser".

Thanks for the reply. I will watch the one about Monk. It's on Youtube (with Italian subtitles though).

There is also a more recent one on Lee Morgan, "I Called Him Lee", which I haven't yet seen but know has had strong recommendations.

Not that into Morgan, but very interested. Will search for it. Thanks again.

There are a few good jazz docs out there. One of my favorites -

Lady Day: The Many Faces Of Billie Holiday (1991,  Matthew Seig)
The firsthand accounts of Billie from her peers (who were still alive at the time); good editing, particularly the samples of Billie's best recordings and Ruby Dee's narration from Billie's memoir, Lady Sings The Blues, are mostly what makes this one stand out from the others. Gotta mention Audra Macdonald's turn as Billie in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill (2016, HBO). Not a documentary as much as a document (sometimes eerily so) of what the real Lady Day was like.

Anyone watch this one? It's a 3 and a half hour look at the development of sax man, Wayne Shorter, who passed on last year. Currently streaming on Prime Video.

I grabbed this thinking it was an album I hadn't heard before, but it turns out to be selections from his two RCA albums Strictly Powell and Swinging With Bud.

Duke Ellington and Teresa Brewer - It Don't Mean A Thing (1973)

Never heard of this album before finding it yesterday. Original cover on the right, the one I got on the left.

Nothing revolutionary, but impeccably done, nonetheless.
