Title: The Cat Thread
Post by: John Copeland on February 27, 2009, 07:30:10 PM
Plenty of cats in here.  A lot of cat lovers, me included.  Time for a wee post with pics and stories about your moggie.
All cats in my life past and present get called "Wootz" or "Wooteez".  I did have one cat called "Smokey Wooteez Delphi Tooteez".  I don't know why.  Its a feline thing.  Cats are the masters of luxury and outdoor violence.
I love cats, I'm getting one next week as my last Wooteez died.
I might get this one:

I have never cared much for cats.  Not that I disliked them, but I just didn't understand why people would choose a cat when they could have a dog.  I had heard tales of cats that related to people like dogs, but hadn't experienced it.  To me they seemed utterly self-absorbed and self-seeking little princesses who were far more trouble than they're worth--like trophy wives or Paris Hilton.

However, we now have a cat who has owned my heart for nearly ten years.  Chloe started out as a tough little critter who didn't care much for people but would rather be out catching birds and mice, unlike her sister who liked nothing better than to curl up in a lap--anyone's lap.  Chloe turned up her nose at everyone's efforts to hold her or pet her and didn't seem to like people at all, except for me.  For some reason she took to me right away, maybe because I didn't like cats any more than she liked people, or maybe just because I was usually the one who fed her.

In many respects Chloe acts like a dog, greeting me at the door when I come home, following me around the house, curling up on the floor at my feet when I'm reading or on the PC, and she even comes when she's called (most of the time, that is).  She's still a fine hunter and likes to share her success.  Over the years she's brought me mice, frogs, crickets, and an assortment of small birds, including a live hummingbird once.  Thank God we were outside when she laid that at my feet.  Thinking it dead, I picked it up to dispose of it and was surprised to feel its little heart still beating.  The poor little bird must have been paralyzed with fear.  While I was looking it over for damage the bird suddenly shook itself, stood for a moment in my cupped hands, and then launched itself into flight and buzzed away, apparently none the worse for wear.

Too bad Chloe doesn't like water.  With a mouth that soft she would probably make a fine retriever.  I'd like to see her trying to carry a Canadian goose more than twice her size!

When I was younger my gran had a cat called Foxy (being ginger of course). We shared many of the same interests: sleeping, walking on top of walls, eating meat. We were great pals! He would give me an eskimo kiss if I got up close. He was so sweet and friendly, always looked like he had a cheeky smile on his face and never sulked, not even when soggy!  :o

As much as I love dogs, I have more respect for the independence of cats. They know as well as we do that they could fine well survive entirely by themselves. But why would they bother when they can be fed, kept warm and still leave to carry out their own business as they please? To use a phrase that sounds like it should have been coined by a cat, 'why have a dog and bark yourself?'.  ;D

Purrfectly summed up.  A cats character becomes clear form it's independence and bird mauling antics in the garden.  They are so divinely intelligent that people used to worship them.

I agree so much with what DavidRoss said above ;D

My 15 year old cat-Suki- has never gone outside because I live in a top floor apartment/flat but it is fairly large with big rooms and plenty of space to roam about. She reacts with me in exactly the same way as David's Chloe, greeting my return home, following me about, sleeping on my bed.

Well, at least there's an entertainment value every once in a while.  My old Woots was a real scratcher, it wanted to fight me when I stroked it.  It's daft claws got stuck on my fleece top many a time.  It was a naughty Woots.

Another active day! Charlie (age 14). My cousin's cat is 20. I guess we are lucky - our neighbour's sweet three year old orange coloured cat (who was always in our garden) was run over and killed a week or two ago.

That happened to us too often when I was growing up, and now that I have cats of my own, I have built them this run in the backyard.  The second photo shows you how they leave the house via a cat flap which leads into an exit box, then there's a tunnel under a garden path that leads them into the run proper.  The photos are from "Opening Day" three years ago.

IF this is a reference to my cat in the photograph...I should just point out that she is NOT as fat as she appears to be!

She is 15 and a half years old, is not overfed but has always been a house cat(I live in an apartment/flat) and does not, therefore, get outside.

They do not help me in a CD espionage caper, but they do provide valuable insight as to how your music is organised, how large a part it plays in your life, how you have an interest in art which extends to English classics, your ability to adapt listening pleasure between analogue, digital and other formats, where the CD's are (CD's which are still under review or used most frequently) and where the CD's are which can only be reached by ladder (most infrequently played), and the photos reveal that you are able to crouch comfortably when rummaging your CD's which have yet to be classified, or yet to be arranged in some way.

Good grief...I am speechless :o

So much analysis and deduction from two photographs! :)

Well, John, you are correct in almost all of your conclusions :) The only one which is awry is that the cds I listen to less frequently are the ones most inaccessibly placed. My collection is arranged in strictly alphabetical order by composer. Thus the first cd on the top shelf left of the alcove is Komei Abe's Symphony No.1(Naxos). The alcove contains all composers from Abe to Alfred Hill. With Paul Hindemith onwards the cds are stored in the wooden towers and the shelves. Unfortunately, from Richard Strauss onwards the cds have outgrown my existing shelving and are therefore piled up on top. Vaughan Williams cds make up one entire pile ;D Oh....the total number of cds-as of today-is 2629.

I know that I need more shelves but I have been putting that off until the room is re-decorated(which will be done....?) :)

And...since this thread is supposed to be about Cats ;D.......that is another smashing photo of your new 'Woots' :)

;D He's a savage woots alright.  I totally love the wee thing.
I have applied for him to join the 'Wooteez' which as you know is the military branch of feline life.  He sports the right stripes and is likely to make his mark in frontline fighting, protecting the perimeter of the back yard.
This will give him access to (talking of Panthers) Panther Tanks, Tooth Extenders and the latest technology in Sharp Claw routines.
I'll keep reporting from time to time on his debriefing from the backyard frontline... ;)

That Woots caught unmanageable fleas in Liverpool, I couldn't get rid of them, so that poor Woots was dispatched back to its original owner.  But...

I now have a flea free SON OF WOOTS, the son of the Woots pictured above.  This Woots (called Woots 3) is by far the cleanest most comforting wee Woots I have had.  Woots 3 will go on to be a big Tom cat and a fabulous friend.  Here is Woots 3, son of Woots 2 pictured at the bottom as a kitten.  It was transported to Glasgow from Liverpool by a friend.

Fortunately, my real, live, sixteen-year-old calico is fine.

Then, on Ash Wednesday (March 9th, 2011), she suddenly was far from fine.   :'(

Three weeks later, I adopted Tenille from a friend:

No, I didn't name her, and yes, she has a brother named "The Captain".

On the brighter side, however, I have an answer to the question posed by Ms Palin in your signature:  They get them the same way political parties get candidates:  they volunteer!

I initially thought this was the Chat Thread, and the content proved unusually focused in topic... ;D

John, have you considered naming successive Wootses using Roman numerals, like kings and Popes?

WOOTS III LIVERPPUDLIANIS

Edit: That is clearly not how you translate 'of Liverpool' in Latin, but it does have an amusingly pompous ring to it.

My cat has a trick worked out. When the bed is unmade I play the red dot on it with her. So sometimes she sees me and runs partway up the stairs. If I follow she runs to the bedroom door and waits. Then she runs to the bed and waits while I get the laser pointer.

Missing having one (yet again):  Saw signs of a mouse (always means that there's more than one!); cleaned area up and set traps yesterday.  This morning, found that I had caught one....one small victory for the human!

We have two cats. The 15 year old is a world class mouser still. The 3 year old, who has me trained, is a bit tubby. She tries but almost never catches anything. She stalks birds, which is pretty hilarious as she never has the remotest chance of catching one.

I heard about this recently...o.k. so they're not domesticated cats, but.....do check this out:  https://nationalzoo.si.edu/webcams/cheetah-cub-cam.  Mom just had four cubs (about 5 days ago); she just stepped out for a moment.  The little ones are curled up in a corner.   :)  Mom's already back and it's grooming time!

Saddened to hear that tigers can catch the corona virus from their asymptomatic caregivers; zoos are upping their precautions for cats and primates (heard today).  I believe that there are now six tigers who were infected at the Bronx Zoo.  From what I understand, not badly and are improving.

Nice that zoos are offering live cams....and a big thank you to all of the caregivers who are continuing to look out for the animals whilst the zoos (and most of society) are shut down.

Hello accmacmus,

I remember last summer seeing an artist's work (at a monthly gallery artists' exhibitions) who used that kind of effect with plants.  I think though that she also did some prints in other colors?  I was quite impressed by her work.  Will see if I can find out her name and see what kind of processes she used.

You're not alone in wishing that they knew more about photography....and wished that they (meaning at least 'I') could take a decent picture!  ;) :)

Best wishes,

Quite amusing...thanks!  I suspect that the cat upstaged the vicar there.  Hope that vicar didn't then pour the milk into his tea?!  That said, I suspect that I've shared more than one glass of water with a cat or two during the course of my lifetime.

Yes, it's a lovely story. I liked the Dean of Southwark Cathedral's final comment. I was in that cathedral a few years ago with friends and am sure that I saw the famous cat.

I hope that the bishop who made those comments about "Is this a joke?", etc. "got it" in the end.  :(

Oh, too funny!  I read that story yesterday!  Good of the author to share their story...hard though it was.  Towards the [young] end of my last cat's life, I realized that someone else recently started feeding him!  Not good for several reasons:  1) he gained about a pound in one month = 10% of his weight!; 2) He must have been being fed some sort of 'kitty crack' = inexpensive but tasty dry food, so that he would no longer eat his special food which helped to correct and then prevent dental disease; 3) and could have lead to other issues (like she described)--if he hadn't been hit by a car first.  :(  I'm sure that the person meant well, but they were creating problems instead.  I tried several times to put a collar around his neck, but the ones that they recommend (the breakaway type), he kept managing to get them off of his neck.  He was microchipped, however, with up to the date contact info re moi, the owner.

As we couldn't see my brother at Christmas this year he very kindly sent us a hamper of food and drink goodies. Now that the contents have been mainly consumed my wife thought that the large empty box would be an ideal place for me to store the papers that were cluttering up my desk. However, someone had other plans  ::)

I think that Oliver is one of the few names that my wife and I agreed on if we had a son (which we didn't) so, we gave the name to our cat instead - I think that it suits him. I love the cartoons, especially the computer keypad one. I was just watching a live TV interview on the BBC News about the cancellation of the A (Advanced) Level exams in school next Summer. A young school student was being interviewed and her cat kept on making an appearance. The Newsreader reassured her that pets were always welcome on the News!

We have 3 cats and 2 dogs, all of them rescues. The dogs are Satos from Puerto Rico.

The Spunkster was about 36 pounds when we last weighed him. I'm not sure how long he is. He is somewhat beachball shaped, so circumference might be a better measurement.

Here he is in a whiskey barrel planter.

We’ve always had dogs in our house - always. Cats came and went. Always outdoor cats. Which is why two of them never came back  :-[, including Abby, our last one. She was surely eaten by a nasty critter (a pekan?) when we were at the cottage. There is a large wooded area just across the road - irresistible hunting grounds for an elite mouser. Obviously she wasn’t the only one to hunt there...

Yep!  When I did have a cat, I tried very hard to keep an eye on it (or them) and tried to be clever about keeping it away from my food.  As in Toujours "En garde!"  And an added warning: if you like seltzer water (bubbly stuff), keep kitties away!

So cute ! We had such a cat, black and furry. His name was Zorro. When outside he was invisible, you’d never see him. If I stepped out he’d come out from a nearby bush to get petted.

Oliver (our cat) has made lots of local friends as he rolls around upside down on the pavement until someone makes a fuss of him. Like Zorro (great name) he suddenly appears out of the bushes.

On Sunday night I was just settling down to watch 'Line of Duty' with my wife when the cat strolled in with a bird in his mouth. The bird then escaped and went into the under-stairs cupboard. I had to take everything out to locate the bird, which I then took to the local animal welfare centre. He/she was given some antibiotic medicine but should recover. Cost me £10! This was unusual because our cat is quite lame, having been born with a deformity in his legs. Nice relaxing evening!  ::)

Oh, my!  Quite the evening!  Alas, that's one of the possibilities/perils of having an indoor/outdoor kitty.  That was very kind of you to take the bird to an animal rescue center Jeffrey and am glad to hear that it will be o.k.  What kind of bird was it?  Trust that you had a long talk with your kitty afterwards?

Either a sparrow or a starling PD. My wife said it was (hopefully still is) a starling but the rescue centre lady said it was a sparrow. Difficult to tell from inside the cat's mouth! I recently discovered a few feathers in our dining room - but no bird. I now know that our cat consumes them completely. I read somewhere that if they were bigger they would eat us as well - a terrifying thought for a cat lover!   :o

He's just an average tabby moggie, I think, but he has a nicely pointed face and 'target' rings on his sides. Unfortunately, he had to have all his teeth removed pretty soon after we picked him up in 2014 (when he was already about 2): he had badly inflamed gums. But it doesn't seem to have stopped him enjoying life (or food!) and he is definitely 'of the tribe of Tiger'! He will sit quietly on my study desk enjoying whatever music is playing for hours on end, but he cannot stand Messiaen (no matter the composition) for some reason and will always leave if any of it starts. He is otherwise of impeccable taste!

Poor kid!  I had to have dental work (including a couple of extractions) on one of my cats years ago.  I soon thereafter learned how to brush their teeth (with a special enzymatic toothpaste)--not exactly fun but doable.  With my last one (who I had adopted as a kitten), he ended up developing a bad case of gingivitis (even though he was still a kitten!) and I switched him over to a special dental hard food which helped a lot (along with brushing).  Problem went away!

Glad that he enjoys your musical tastes--apart from Messiaen.  Perhaps he enjoys real bird songs more?  ;)

I bought this "coffee table" book of cat/kitten photos for my wife.  Each page is devoted to a single cat in a charming pose and given a name reflecting its perceived personality.  All cats resided in a Humane Society shelter in Kentucky.  All fun dissipates, however, in the end pages which describe the fates of the animals.  Most were happily adopted; but some (with cute names no less!) were euthanized because of physical abnormality or disease like feline leukemia.  Not much of a feel-good book after all and my wife is upset with me.

At a quick glance, it looks to be a nice shelter.  On their "About Us" page, they state:

"Woodford Humane Society takes in all animals in need, regardless of their health, age, or breed. We never put a time limit on how long a pet can stay with us.

With no government funding, we rely solely on donations and private contributions to care for approximately 1,000 animals each year. We are proud to maintain a placement rate of 95% or higher – almost triple the national average."

No shelter, alas, is in strictest of terms a no-kill shelter (even the best of them).  For various reasons they do at times have to euthanize animals.   :(  Perhaps consider donating it to a local library?  Or ask your vet where they think it could be best made use of?  I think that it could be a valuable tool to help convince those who don't want to spay or neuter their pets to seriously rethink it and also to encourage others to adopt from shelters or maybe even think about volunteering there or donating?  And the importance too of microchipping your pet(s) and keeping your contact information up to date!

Yes, books about animals can oftentimes be troubling to read, but I'd encourage you and your spouse to try to take heart from the inspirational and successful stories and find comfort in knowing that all of the animals that passed through their hands were loved and cared for--including those that had to be euthanized.

Best wishes,

PD

Any idea of their story?  Hopefully they will chill out soon and get adopted?  Or are they already in a new home?  If they are ferals, it can take some time and patience to get them to trust their human(s).

I occasionally go back to AymieandGracie's tik tok page to see if there are any new fun updates.  They're the one with the two cats named Penny and Lillie with the little girl (Gracie) doing the voiceovers for Penny.

Found out that they all came down with Covid.  Her husband apparently got it at work.  Even Penny the cat contracted it (it seems that Lillie, their tuxedo cat, didn't get it).  Thankfully, they are all doing much better now.

Just reminds you what a small world it is.   :(

I confess:  I went back and watched a couple other of ones featuring Henri.  The guy who created them also created a cat videos fest.  That, and his "store" have raised money (at least $5,000) for animal shelters.

Sadly, the tuxedo kitty (real name Henry) passed away in December of 2020.  :'(  Well, he was a real credit to all felines--helping to raise money for them.

Begemot!

A Russian speaking friend of mine named her cat Begemot after that character and also told me that while he is for some reason called Behemoth in English translations his Russian name actually means hippopotamus.

They've made a variety of really good covers for various editions of that book using that character.

I've been told (perhaps Karl or another member who knows Russian can confirm) that the Cyrillic character which sounds G is used to transliterate H as well. Hence Begemot/Behemoth.

Well done!  Hadn't heard of Owlkitty before now.  I see that there's also one of her in Lord of the Rings.  :)

Love it!
I remember well the often constant efforts to retrieve the toys--often having to use a yardstick to flush them out, taking off the protective grate at the bottom of the fridge.  That and having to pull out the metal drawer at the bottom of my stove (heavy from roasting pans)...take it off of the track that it fits into and checking under there too--then having to put heavy drawer back onto its tracks.   ::)

But, would I do it all again?  Yes!  Loved watching one of them in particular enjoying the 1) chase the toy mouse or whatever around the kitchen floor...batting away at it, 2) then playing stash it away under the fridge but still in reach to be able to retrieve it, then 3) alas, can no longer play that game as they had shoved it too far under fridge or stove!

I love the part when she says (before trying to give the kitten a bath):  "This will be either the bravest thing that I've ever done, or the dumbest thing I've ever done".  :D

Margaret Getchell LaForge was a cousin of RH Macy who was for a number of years a senior executive in what was then a one store enterprise. She contributed a number of things to the company's history (including its logo) and had a thing for having cats photographed in human clothes and poses. (Supposedly they were dosed with whiskey to keep them placid.)
Here's an example.

Yes, he does look very fox-like (for a cat anyway).  :D

Are you sure that it's his signature at the bottom and not someone just writing what it was a photo of?  What does it say after "& Foxy"....looks like his something or other starting with an "m"?

Would love to have that print in any event...perhaps Ursula wrote that underneath the picture?

Wonder whether or not there exists any kitty descendants of Foxy?  :-\

Speaking of cats, how is yours doing these days Jeffrey?

PD it's signed 'Ralph Vaughan Williams' (he usually signed 'R.Vaughan Williams') so, I guess that it's to family or a close friend. Then it says 'X Foxy - his mark'. I think that the whole inscription is written by Vaughan Williams. Thanks for asking about Oliver. I attach a recent photo. As you see, he's enjoying a typically active day:

Ah, yes, "mark" makes sense.

And thank you for the recent photo.  Does Oliver like being scratched under the chin?  Or?  In any event, please tell him that he has a "fan" in the US and scratch/pet him where he loves it the most and tell him that it's from me.

All the best wishes to you and your family,

Thank you PD and the same to you. Yes, he's very affectionate and is often to be found on the pavement (sidewalk) outside the house, lying upside down and waiting for a passer-by to make a fuss of him. I will be sure to pass on your kind greetings. He is currently enjoying his new spot - under the Christmas Tree. As you can see he enjoys using the sofa as a scratch pad.

Ran across an interesting story this morning on the BBC's website.  It's about the British illustrator Louis Wain and how he helped to change people's perceptions/feeling about cats.  They've made a movie of his life starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

I've been told (perhaps Karl or another member who knows Russian can confirm) that the Cyrillic character which sounds G is used to transliterate H as well. Hence Begemot/Behemoth.

Yup. My name (Howard) is reputedly best transcribed as Говард. And the Г is definitely doing duty for English H there. (Also в (Russian 'v') standing in for W, which means I'm pronounced 'Gor-vard', basically, but that's a separate issue).

Handel is similarly spelled Гендель ("Gendell", or possibly "Gendyell", depending on where the stress is: I am not sure on that!)
