Title: Software update
Post by: Dungeon Master on November 22, 2022, 10:31:20 PM
Hi all

The GMG forum software has been updated to the latest version 2.1.3. This is a bare-bones install with no modifications of customisations. As such it will look a little generic. The functionality remains the same, and all boards, topics and posts should have been transcribed. Over the next few days, I will customise the forum to improve the look and tailor it better for our members.

Why was the update necessary? The old version was not being maintained with bug fixes and security patches, so it was becoming vulnerable to bots and malware. The old version was never designed to be viewed on small devices, such a phones and tablets. The buttons were too small for fingers, and some functionality was not available. The new version flows smoothly from full desktop size to tiny phone size, while keeping functionality.

New features:
Alert notifications
WYSIWYG editor
Draft messages (write now, revise and send later)
Mentions of @otherusers
Drag and Drop attachments
Improved moderating functions
GDPR compliance (essential for European standards)
Security updates
Backend server compatibility improvements

Please let me know if you notice any issues.

cheers
Rob

Goodness, it looks different!

But logged back in no problems. And I don't think that's just because I'm so local.

EDIT: Actually, the location field seems to have gone, which is interesting.

Let's see if this works.

Very different, actually.

I don't see my avatar at all but this is the least of the problems. I don't see "Read Unread topics" and "Read Replies to Topics You Visited" anymore. Honestly, it's worse than the previous version but what option do I have except get used to it?  ;D

Many of the changes will take a while to get used to, especially for oldies such as myself. You may need to enable or re-enable certain features within your profile.

Joining the queue of old folks having to get used to the new (neater) layout  ;D

Working ok so far this end (UK). Definitely seems faster on the laptop. Will check the mobile later.

Only had to re-set my local time in the profile settings for now.

I can see your avatar, and both of those things are in the top right hand corner.

Thanks. I had noticed them right there earlier.

Actually, the new layout is the same as that of Talk Classical. It will take a while to get used to it but it's not really a big problem.

My pw was remembered through the change, so this worked well. The new features sound nice. The new look will take me some time getting used to it, although for some reason it does look oddly familiar, I think I was in another forum with a similar design years ago, in some ways it seems more old fashioned (like early 2000s) than the old look

These three features are especially exciting. I write long messages occasionally that could use a draft feature, and know there are some GMGers who write messages in MS Word first before posting. Mentioning other users so that they see something (a long-delayed reply, for example) could be really helpful!

One more feature that is new and good is the one I am using now to type this: "quick edit," where you can edit your post without having to reopen the composition webpage. Saves a little bit of time/web traffic/data on mobile.

I think this new version also supports a positivity-only "likes" feature for posts (i.e., no "dislikes"), which on other forums people use either to express thanks for a comment or to simply acknowledge its helpfulness without fully replying. Something we could think about, at least.

Looking forward to the customized look instead of this very blue situation.  8)

Maybe profile modifications like location or subscriber badges are settings that just need to be toggled, rather than "bugs".

All good I think - well done to the folk who no doubt have put a lot of work into ensuring this smooth transition to the new format.  The ease of use/viewing on phones etc is a definite plus for sure and worth the trade off of an (initially) unfamiliar look.  Thankyou!

One note, on the posting/replying screen, I'm not yet seeing the buttons for WYSIWYG toggle, draft saving, or tagging other users.

EDIT: Oh, found the WYSIWYG button, it's the document page icon on the far right. Hey, while you're clicking it, try the new maximize button too!!

If you toggle it on, instead of having to use the code tags with brackets [], you can bold, italicize, link, etc text just like in MS Word and see it exactly as it will appear in the published product. "What You See Is What You Get"!

I've already forgotten what the site used to look like. :)

One quirk I notice is that the quote text seems to have a bigger font than the normal text. Maybe that is browser dependent.

But, that said: it seems a bit of a jump from December 2021's 2.0.19 to today's 2.1.3, too. There were a number of releases of the 2.1 family throughout 2022: what exactly is the upgrade policy here? I'd prefer more frequent security patches than infrequent version/functionality jumps, basically.

And I still would appreciate it if you'd fix the fact that subscriber badges seem to have vanished.

Quote from: absolutelybaching on November 23, 2022, 08:42:56 AMNo problem. It's supposed to have a "GMG:Veteran" badge, and an "S:Subscriber" badge. The one is showing, the other is not.

The old forum showed multiple badges, such as Veteran user as well as Subscriber, if relevant. That was done with a hack that I hard coded, and not a standard part of the software.

The new software does not have the ability to show multiple badges, and I have not got into the guts of the code to modify it. So you only get one badge.

I am considering scrapping the subscriber system altogether. I very much appreciate the financial support, but with PayPal changes it is no longer automated, so I have to manually adjust each subscribers profile when their subscription changes.

Is it possible to implement some sort of "tip jar" system where people who want to help support the forum can leave one-time donations as desired? If needed, there could be an annual or semiannual reminder campaign to urge people to use the tip jar.

This idea sounds good, and possibly easier to implement than keeping track of subscriptions.

I'm really liking the new interface. More airy and open, and has some very convenient new features that are more in line with what other platforms can do.

In the icons bar above the message body there is an icon (to the right of the Youtuobe one) which looks like a picture. Place the cursor on it and it reads "Insert an image". Click on it and a pop up appears where you can specifiy, if you wish, the dimensions of the picture. When you're done, click "Insert".

The pictures that I like posting (CD covers usually) are invariably saved under'photos'on my laptop. In the old system, unless the image was too big, it was relatively easy to post them. I also don't particularly care for having to upload an image before posting a comment (it's an extra, separate step now, where before pointing to an image file was sufficient, without needing to explicitly 'upload' it. It would be nice if uploads could be automated.

If you mean inserting images by URL, you don't have to upload it first. Just copy-paste the URL in the pop up window which appears by clicking the "Insert an Image" icon and then click "Insert".

It may be an image he made/scanned, however - for those, you must post them on some host site and get a URL for adding here now.

Alternatively, you can quote the post to which you wish to add an image from computer, copy the whole thing and paste it into a "Reply" message body, where you have the Attachment option. Bit of a headache either way. This absence of Attachment from the Quote is the biggest bug of the new version so far.

All the imagery I use I upload from my PC, never linking to a third-party site. The old forum version let you point to a JPG on your disk, then you clicked 'Post', job done. Now, you point to a JPG, and have to click 'Upload', then post.

I see what you mean: after specifying the jpg you have to click twice instead of once.

The forum looks and feels good, so thanks from me for that.

There is one thing I'd like, though I appreciate the system may not allow it. I'd like to see a notification when someone has quoted one of my posts.

Just something for everyone to note, because it wasn't obvious for me. There is a difference between "quick edit" and "modify" -- modify is in the "more" menu. Basically modify includes formatting tools.

I loooove the new "Quote Selected Text" option so that you don't have to quote a whole post to reply to one little thing in it.
(I also hope that resolves the past issue where I would post a "New Releases" update with 25 image files, and then some people would quote-reply and replicate all 25 images over again. So much scrolling! But now people can highlight one image and quote that only.)

I used that feature just now, much easier than quoting the entire post and trying to delete the extraneous stuff, which is next to impossible if there are lots of images.

That, and the improved experience on my phone are big advantages, and I see no downside. All the features which I typically used (such as linking or including images) seem to have been preserved with minor modification.

I have just discovered a new feature: you can make an image from the computer appear in the message body, not as a separate attachment under it. All you have to do is click "Insert" after clicking "Upload". Don't forget to delete the uploaded image from the Attachment bar, though, otherwise it will appear twice, both in the message body and under it as a separate attachment.

I currently appear to be the only Silver Subscriber, because I moaned about it (given I'd just paid the subscription the day before, I bloody well expect the one tangible benefit from parting with my hard-earned to be still present! I'm happy for a refund if the site owner is not up to doing subscriptions any more...)

But I know I am not the only Silver Subscriber, and the lack of energy shown in transferring the details across somewhat annoys. It is a trivial bit of SQL. It should have been done on day 1.

I get it's a labour of love. But either do it right, or don't. You do not let people sign up for a paid-for benefit one day and withdraw it the next, because it's a bit of a faff sorting it out!

All Silver Subscribers transferred to the new software right now, please.
I'm also a Silver Subscriber but not currently designated as such.

Okay, I'm seeing all of that on the computer. I guess the phone just doesn't have enough real estate to include everything, which is fair enough.

I vary as to which one I use more. I suspect I've used the phone a lot more in the last few days because I browse while camped in front of the television if the soccer isn't totally gripping...

Thank you, Rob, for your effort and dedication --- and now that I think of it, why is it that you never take part in the talks? Are you more into operating and maintaining a classical music forum than into classical music itself? Inquiring minds want to know.  ;D
Florestan, I suspect that he's busy living his life like all of us.  Maybe has less time/inclinations to spend it online (which is totally fair and natural).  He's gone to a lot of efforts (and at personal expense) to create a forum (and maintain) for classical music lovers....including recs (like suggestions), a children's thread and so much more.  I suspect that his life is busy and he's been really kind to keep this forum alive.  And, yes, he does love classical music; I have no doubt of that.

Rob, congratulations on a successful update and many, many thanks for all your efforts to keep this forum afloat - for us!  :)

I noticed you have already changed some settings to get things closer to the old look, which was plain and easy on the eye.
Looks good!!

But... I was wondering about the possibility of changing the rather odd text font in the reply/post feature? And the "buttons" in that feature are quite tiny (as are the emoticons, which also look a bit odd - I liked the old(fashioned) look better).

There is nothing in the admin settings to change either of those, sorry.

I'm going to keep it like my e this for a month or two, let people get accustomed to the look, and if people still complain, I can delve into the coding.

I just noticed that we've lost all the pictures that were linked to Amazon through their ASIN code...
After Amazon started messing with their pictures, most of stopped using this feature but it used to be very popular and there were many of these linked pictures in the older posts.

Can we have a private conversation with a group of invitees?  Rather than a private message.

You can send a private message to multiple people if I recall correctly. But if you want a chat window... this is a message board. Message boards aren't designed for that. Even Meta separates Facebook and Messenger.

The Amazon images button was my own programming hack of the old forum software. This new version is a clean install, and therefore does not include that previous hack.

I do plan to restore that function, but it will take a bit of time to work out where to code it in the new software.

Woah there cowboy! So many requests after a whole new install.

The answer to all your questions is no. At least not natively.

If Spotify or Soundcloud are deemed to be vital by the community, I will look at finding a mod to install, or code my own. But not straight away.

I am very much opposed to the anonymous like button. People will post in order to be liked, not in order to express their considered opinions.

Someone above (I think @Pohjolas Daughter ) said they were pleased that places like this still exist on the public internet. So am I. However, I think the like button is a step in the wrong direction.

Minus 1. The function of the Like button is to get rid of the need for posts that say nothing beyond indicating agreement.

EDIT: I actually find it kind of amusing that you just implemented a Like by another method in order to indicate your dislike of Likes. It's exactly the same behaviour. Only your method takes longer and takes up more room.

And the "like" is not anonymous. We can all click on the number of likes in our post and see the names of the "likers".

Likes are not anonymous. Just below the text of the post there is a thumbs-up icon and if you click it or the word "Like" you will see that it will say "You like this" underneath. If someone else likes it, it will say "1 person likes this" and if you click "1 person" (or however many persons like it) you will see a list of who liked it.

I liked your post, so you should be able to confirm that.

Hello, new-ish member here.

I joined many moons ago, but only logged in a few times before the software kicked me out. I was encouraged by the advent of the software update to try again. This time I joined without issue only to find that I could not log in today - the error message claimed that there was no such username or email address, despite there being an acknowledgement in my email inbox. I have just joined again using exactly the same email address and username, so I thought it best to wave hello before the software ostracises me once more.

Quote from: absolutelybaching on November 26, 2022, 02:26:56 AMWhen I look at your last posting in the What Are You Listening To thread, I see this code (I'm replacing square brackets with round ones, for formatting reasons):
     (quote author=vandermolen link=msg=1482895 date=1669461482
     Nino Rota: Symphony No.1

     (attach id=93795_Rota 1.jpg(/attach)
     (/quote)

When I check the code on my recent posts there, I see:

     (quote author=absolutelybaching link=msg=1482749 date=1669396858)
     Franz Schmidt's
     [i]Symphony No. 1 [/i]

     Neeme Järvi, Detroit Symphony Orchestra

     (/quote)

You have 'attach' tags where I do not. So, how are you uploading your images?

The way I do it, click 'Reply', type your message, then click 'Attachments and other options' to reveal the hidden items. Click [Add Files] and point to your JPG. Then click [Upload]. Then click [Post].

At no point do you click any of the post formatting options above the message typing area (if that's what you're doing) -i.e., not the 'Insert an image' or anything else in that group of buttons.

It is interesting, though, that when I just tested this, I noticed attach tags being written around the JPG image file name I just uploaded, though in the test I just did, I didn't see these tags coming through to the final post. Not sure what's going on there, or whether Rob is tweaking the image upload process behind the scenes right now. Anyway: I think it's those attach tags that mean your image appears both embedded within the post and bolted onto the end of it. If you manually remove them by editing  your post and just deleting [ Attach ] and [ / Attach ] tags, it's likely one of those images will disappear.

Edited to add: I now understand what you're doing. Florestan's comment about clicking [Insert] was the clue.

Don't click the Insert button at all!!

As I mentioned, you can upload an image and then click [Post], no [Insert] necessary. If you *do* click [Insert], then not only have you attached an image to your post (which would appear underneath your post, after the horizontal line ending it) but you are also asking to in-line insert said image using the attach tags I mentioned before.

I think the [Insert] button is there to get in-line images, rather than images tagged onto the end of the post after all the text has ended.

If you prefer to have inline images, then of course use the [Insert] button, but then you have to do what Florestan mentioned: you have to delete the upload, too, otherwise you'll get a duplicate.

Thanks.

It seems that the like button has disappeared from all of my posts, so my posts cannot be "liked." This is a change, because I have some posts that say "1 person has liked this post" even though there is no like button, and I seem to remember seeing the like button my posts in the past. Quote from: absolutelybaching on November 26, 2022, 06:37:20 AMNot entirely sure why this is quite so hard to convey! How do you think I'm typing this if I'm not logged in, for starters?!

Additionally, please see below. That's your post, with no like button, and if you look with a magnifying glass on the top part of the screen, you'll see 'absolutelybaching' mentioned, next to 'My messages': I'm very definitely logged in, and there's no like button.

You're using a computer, not a phone, correct?

I'm on my phone and can see the like buttons; but the layout I'm seeing is not the layout shown on your screencap. (A screencap off my phone always exceeds 500kb so I can't attach an image to demonstrate).

So I'm wondering if the like button shows at the moment only for phones.
Question to the members reading this on a computer: can you see the like buttons?

I did notice that Karl and absolutelybaching have one thing in common (they're both Silver Subscribers),that none of the people who report seeing the like button have that one thing...and that it would make no sense why that commonality would have on impact on their ability to see the like button.

It's not too crazy. If moderators can't "like" it is conceivable that subscribers are in a separate group of members that the forum mistakenly treats like moderators.

It would be nice if, when we mentioned someone, their name appeared as a link to their profile in the post.

Also, to discourage discord and encourage a little healthy competition, the number of likes a person has received could be recorded in their profile and in the list of members. You could add a little halo icon to their avatar if they are in the top 3.

That strikes me as a terrible idea. The number of likes will be largely determined by the rate of posting. Maybe the ratio of likes to posts would have some meaning.

I tend to agree with Andrei up-thread, however, that this sort of 'competitive voting' doesn't seem to be something that really suits the mood and feel of the place.

I tend to be in favor or likes, without any competitive feature such as tabulating who has the most likes. When I see that a post of mine has been "liked" I have some indication that someone noticed and appreciated my contribution.

The Like button does not show for your own posts. But it will be visible to others on your posts. The theory is, I guess, that if you made the post, you automatically considered it worthy, and valiant, and you can't also "like" it.

Good grief. So to sum up the last several pages, a subscription frees you from the tyranny of the like button, we've just about managed to get away from people agreeing with a proposition about anonymity that wasn't ever applicable, and most of us can't understand why the hell one member wants a league table that I've never seen implemented on any site anywhere.

Have I got that about right? What a thread to wake up to.

I'd be doing well on the league table by the way. 4 likes for my post that was (1) designed to ironically highlight how to succeed on the league table, and (2) funny.

I'm amazed at how few problems there have been, given that it was a major version upgrade. My only gripe at this point is that the font for posts has gotten smaller and my eyes haven't gotten any better. And quoted posts seem to have a larger font than native ve posts. Maybe that is browser dependent.

Would be useful to know if someone with (a) Android 11 mobile; and (b) Firefox for Android experiences the same. Pick a post by someone, click the Quote button, and start typing a reply and see if anything happens after first fullstop is typed.

Hi AB,
I have an Android 11 phone and installed Firefox just now to check. I don't get any "Quote" popping up after a full stop after quoting a post. Nothing either in my phone usual browser, Google Chrome.

@absolutelybaching What version of Firefox were you using on your phone? Did you have any add-ons installed on Firefox?

Quote from: absolutelybaching on November 27, 2022, 01:35:37 AMVersion is 107.1.0 (Build #2015915067), and I don't have any extensions. I do have https-only mode=on; enhanced tracking protection=on; language is English UK; cookies and so on are deleted on browser close: the usual paranoia stuff!

I'm stumped. There are a few text-replace add-ons for Firefox, and I suspected one of those might have been the culprit. Anyways, I have posted the question on the SMF Community forums, to see if they can elucidate.

I took a leaf from your book and installed a different browser.
Whaddyaknow?! No 'Quote' appears (in DuckDuckGo Browser).
It appears to be a Firefox thing unique to my phone. I shall switch browsers, basically, and I guess no further detective work is required :)

Thanks again.

I think it must be some weird combination of that app and your phone's predictive text. It sees the word quote at the start and end of the text you are quoting in the HTML marks, and somehow from the latter of those concludes that the thing to do when ending a block of text is to say "quote".

I use Firefox on my computer, but not on my iPhone, I use Safari on that.

Arghhhh. What have they done to my favourite music forum??? It is broken! I hate it. Stupid changes that are pointless, annoying and unnecessarily different!!

Further reflections:

I guess it is probably OK. I still mostly hate it though.

What did the old site look like, again? I wonder if there are any new posts on the less posted composers that I like?

What words did you try? I tried about a dozen searches within specific threads and boards.

Examples:
"Orfeo" on the opera thread
"Putin" in the Diner section
"Richter" on the Great Recordings and Reviews board
"vinyl" on the entire forum
"arpeggio" on the Composing and Performing board
"Thelonious" on the Jazz board
"Goedicke" on the "What are you listening to now" thread for something a bit more esotieric

In all cases, results returned in less than 1 second and all seemed highly relevant and restricted to the forum/board or thread I specified.

Can others check the Search function (the search box at the top right of the page) and report back.

The search box in the top right doesn't work for me if "this topic" is selected, I have no results for e.g. "Search" in this topic, "Mozart" in the listening thread. However, If I have "Entire Forum" selected, then I get results ok.

On the other hand, if I go through the "main" Search button in the toolbar (Next to the home button) and make a search for "Search" in GMG News only, I do get results with the relevant posts of this thread.

I'll try a couple more.

Looks like the difference in being able to get search results is between general boards like "The Jazz Lounge" or "Opera and Vocal" and trying to search on specific threads (as in topics) [or am I using the computer lingo incorrectly here?].

Title: Re: Software update
Post by: George on November 30, 2022, 04:46:43 AM
OK, using the search box at the top right of this page, I did a search using the term "lingo" for

1. This topic - no results
2. This board - quickly yielded correct results
3. Entire Forum - quickly yielded correct results

So, @Dungeon Master - it is only "This topic" searches that is not working. I can also confirm that "This topis" searches are not working in the Diner, nor the Music Room threads.

Thanks again for your hard work. The search works so fast now, so it will be great to have it fully functioning.

The search box next to the home button doesn't have an option to search a specific topic, just a specific board, so the feature that is not working (search of "This Topic") isn't available there. It does have the nice feature of searching in a group of boards (rather than "This Board").

If you're in the topic (like now), go to the very top of the page.  It's on the far right.  There's the oval circle where you type in what you want to search for, and then to the right of it, it says "Search this topic" [also allowing you to change it to other options using up and down arrows and a menu].  To the right of the options is the search button which you then click on--after telling the search engine what and where to search for.

On iPhone/Safari it only shows up if the phone is held in landscape mode. It disappears in portrait mode (to declutter the screen, I presume).

In any case, the mobile version is preferable in the updated software because, as I recall, in the old version the mobile version didn't highlight boards that had new posts when viewing the main page.

When one scrolls up from the bottom of a page with lots of images (e.g. the listening and buying threads), I noticed images are no longer loading instantaneously, in the seamless manner they used to; instead, they are loading as one goes along, resulting in very noticeable and annoying jolts and stutters, losing your position on the page. Can this be fixed or is it staying with us? 🤷

But if anyone has run across this option or if Rob notes this  comment (he will) maybe it's a control that he could simply activate.  😇

Do you mean that when you press the button to "Mark everything read", you don't get a box that comes up and says "Are you sure you want to do that?". I am highly desirous of turning that right off. When you start typing a name a pop-up should appear. George works fine. Your own name is awkward because of the spaces, but @ followed by k followed by space offers me @k a rl h e nn i ng

It has been marked as a member name but it hasn't appeared as bold. Did it actually count as a mention? I think so because it seems to be a hyperlink to your profile.

The plain text won't work. When you type "@" and then start a member's name, the forum should give you a popup showing members that match the letters you type. Click on one of those member names and the forum will create a hyperlink mention that alerts the other user.

Quote from: absolutelybaching on December 02, 2022, 02:30:50 AMYes. It works in as much as I see a hyperlink and I was alerted. But I wasn't questioning the functionality for the person being referenced.  Rather, it is the fact that I cannot reference a username by use of the at symbol.

If I start typing @Spotted for example... nothing happens. No pop-ups. No hyperlinking. Nothing. I have tried doing so in Quick Reply and Reply. Same results in both cases. You will note that the "@Spotted" above is not a hyperlink and nothing was ever displayed to me to help it turn into one.

For reference, it's a PC running Firefox 107.0, no extensions.

And now I'm editing this in Chromium 107 and trying again: @Spotted ....nope. Same result. No pop-up, no hyperlinking, no prompt of any kind.
Could it possibly have something to do with any of your security and/or privacy settings either on your PC itself or on Firefox or Chrome?

I am assuming that if I type @ followed by "spot", something's supposed to happen by way of a pop-up selector? And that I don't have to be case-sensitive about it?

Is this another feature subscribers can't use?!
One thing that I just noticed is that you can't type the @+name immediately after either an end quote (as in [/quote] ) or immediately next to another word (as in@abso).  There needs to be a space.  And yes, a dropdown menu appears with several choices when you start typing in the member's name.

PD

EDIT:  p.s. And, no, it doesn't appear to be case-sensitive.

Updated Topics - if I reply to a thread, the thread will pop up in this list. How can I get a thread on this list without posting in the thread?

You can't --- but if you click on Unread Posts you will get a list of all threads where a new post has been made, not only those threads where you posted.

Oh, interesting!  I didn't know that.  I do know that if you go under "Preferences" you can click on something along the lines of "Notify me of new threads".

p.s.  And thanks Karl.  I had found the "Delete all" button earlier.  :)

You can delete alerts but I have to do it one by one. I marked all alerts read, and tried to delete them all at once, by clicking at the bottom of the page, but that does not work for me!

Any chance we can make "modify" into a button alongside "quote"" etc? So many edits I make are about changing font style etc that I wonder if it would be better to just change "quick edit" to "modify".

"Save draft" is a PITA for me -- I keep pressing it instead of "post" and get some pesky warning
Title: Re: Software update
Post by: Mandryka on December 03, 2022, 07:09:31 AM
Also, annoyingly, mentions don't produce the list of members names in quick edit (it does in modify)

And even more annoyingly, if you start a quick edit and then realise you need some feature of modify, you lose all the changes you've made if you change.

As you can see, I'm not a fan of quick edit, or the UI for this part of the software.

So, clicking on "Delete all Read Alerts" didn't work?  Are you sure that you didn't perhaps click on a button (not sure if there is one) that first changed all of the alerts to "Unread"?

EDIT:  I'm not seeing any button to do that (as in "Mark all unread").

I think what he's referring to is stopping those topics from reappearing when new posts are made in them. Permanent removal.

Which has never been possible, and as far as I'm aware still isn't possible. If it BECOMES possible, I will delete the One Word Posts from my consciousness.

Maybe this:
Quote from: Wanderer on December 01, 2022, 07:35:23 AMWhen one scrolls up from the bottom of a page with lots of images (e.g. the listening and buying threads), I noticed images are no longer loading instantaneously, in the seamless manner they used to; instead, they are loading as one goes along, resulting in very noticeable and annoying jolts and stutters, losing your position on the page. Can this be fixed? 🤷

One feature that I've never found that helpful is the one which states something like 'WARNING!!! someone has just posted a new message on this thread'. Considering that in the WAYLTN thread, for example, there is a fairly constant stream of traffic this 'warning' nearly always pops up; others, however, might find it very helpful.

Another wrinkle in search is "Search for posts by user." Unfortunately I have not figured out what the issue is yet.

Here is a little example breakdown.
I had a conversation with Todd recently about the pianist Kempff.

Searching for Kempff and selecting user Todd and checking the "show results as messages" box returns 9 pages of results.
Searching for Kempff and selecting user Brian and allowing search to show results as threads returns 20 results.
Searching for Kempff and selecting user Brian and checking the "show results as messages" box returns 0 (zero) results.

I don't understand why results-as-messages works for one user but not another...or why results-as-threads works more consistently.

With the new software and layout, the old logo didn't fit. So I designed a new one, that you see here.

I made a separate thread where I fully admitted I was no graphic designer and if members had better design skills than me, please submit your best logo.

I got a grand total of zero submissions.

So after 2 weeks I removed the request thread and decided that either:
1. People were very happy with the new logo
Or
2. Members hated the new logo but had even worse design skills than me

If you can design a better logo than me, please feel free.  PNG format, 72 pixels high.

I noticed something peculiar. It used to be that if you looked a another member's profile there was a field "last active." It seems to have indicate that most recent time that the member was interacting with the site. Now some members profiles show "last active" and some don't. Is there a new feature that a member can disable that field for their profile? It is sometimes interesting to look at, because you can see if a missing member is still visiting, but not posting.

I see. I think the effect of that setting on the "last active" field is new, because now long-gone members who could not have changed that setting have had their "last active" field removed.

It's a setback for busybodies, since we can no longer opine that such-and-such a member has been gone since 2013, etc.

Why is there now an option to "Show IP address" now under my avatar which comes up when I login?  And is that only visible to me?  Or, if I accidentally click on it, is it visible to others..including bots?

And do others here see this under their avatars after they've logged in?

Yes, it was present on the old software as well. If you look at a post by someone else (like this one), you will see a note that says "Logged." Clicking on "Logged" gives this message:

Your IP address is shown only to you and moderators. Remember that this information is not identifying, and that most IPs change periodically.

Quote from: Brian on December 15, 2022, 08:16:22 AMYes, it was present on the old software as well. If you look at a post by someone else (like this one), you will see a note that says "Logged." Clicking on "Logged" gives this message:

Your IP address is shown only to you and moderators. Remember that this information is not identifying, and that most IPs change periodically.

You cannot see other members' IP addresses, and they cannot see yours.

Under my avatar it says [underneath Location], it says "Show IP address" vs. "Logged".  I didn't ever recall seeing that before now.  And I also was wondering what "Logged" meant; I assumed that it had meant something like they were a current member.

In any event, thanks!

Why is there now an option to "Show IP address" now under my avatar which comes up when I login?  And is that only visible to me?  Or, if I accidentally click on it, is it visible to others..including bots?

And do others here see this under their avatars after they've logged in?
Its only visible to you (and admin). Regular members, bots and guests can't see it.

I think I stumbled upon a glitch in the "advanced search" option.

Quite often I look for my own old posts, for various reasons but mainly to save me the trouble of looking on the net for a picture of a recording I am listening to.

In advanced search there are two options I often use:
- Show results as messages
- Search in topic subjects only

Now, when I click "Show results as messages" I have discovered that the search is conducted "in topic subjects only".

Odd.... ::)

This may be connected with some other "show results as messages" search issues I have previously posted about:

Quote from: Brian on December 07, 2022, 05:29:50 PMAnother wrinkle in search is "Search for posts by user." Unfortunately I have not figured out what the issue is yet.

Another problem I saw last week is that sometimes when you "show results as messages," it will say there are 25 results, or however many #, but then it actually only shows you one (1) result.

I often search my own old posts because I forget whether I liked a certain post or recording, and if I wrote about it in the listening thread 5 years ago, I can see my own previous notes.  ;D

Hi all. I'm having a holiday in fairly remote parts of New Zealand. Internet access is patchy, but I am able to catch up on issues today.

I have fixed the poll issues for subscribers, and I have gone through all subscriber permissions to see if I have missed anything. I think it's all ok now. My sincere (and humble) apologies.

The search issue is far more perplexing. I have asked the experts on the SMF support forum and they haven't come up with any solutions. I suspect there is some legacy setting from the old forum that is interfering. I shall continue to investigate.

Cheers

Am I right in thinking that you can't post an image if you do a 'Quick reply' or a reply using the 'quote' feature?
Title: Re: Software update
Post by: vandermolen on December 28, 2022, 02:13:40 PM
Quote from: absolutelybaching on December 28, 2022, 03:49:44 AMCorrect. Not unless the image is hosted on a third-party site of some sort (say, Amazon etc) and you know its url. Then you can paste in the URL and enclose it manually with img and /img tags in square brackets. Or you can click the 'insert image' button in Quick Reply, and paste the URL into the resulting pop-up, at which point it will be wrapped in the appropriate img and /img tags automatically.

The same is true if you do a 'Quick Edit' of your own posts: though, in that case, not even the 'insert image' button is available and only manual pasting of a URL and adding the tags will work.

Edited to add: I meant [ img ] and [ /img ] tags, not url and /url ones. Now corrected. Apologies.
Very many thanks. It's a bit of a 'song and dance'!

You can start a "Quick Reply" and then click on "Preview". That will show you how your post looks, and also adds the attachments button if you wish to add anything. Otherwise, skip the "Quick Reply" and just click the "Reply" button for all options.

Why is it like this? I guess "Quick Reply" is exactly that, just a quick reply without fancy additions.

Unless the person who ignores you publicly states it, there is no way to know it. Sending PMs to someone who ignores you is impossible, though, or at least was so on the old version.
Title: Re: Software update

The ignore function on this forum is not a full block. It doesn't prevent someone from seeing your posts (heck, ignore doesn't even fully stop you from seeing the posts of the person you have ignored).

On that basis I think it's pretty unlikely that the software would prevent a person from liking posts that they can see. MAYBE it's possible to set it up so that you're never told that they liked your post.

As for the sarcasm bit... that honestly sounds like projection. If you've chosen to ignore someone, it doesn't follow at all that they feel negatively about you the same way that you feel about them.
Title: Re: Software update

The case AB describes is almost more like stalking, if true. If the person does know AB blocks them, and the person is desperately trying to get AB's attention at every turn, and their intentions are doing so are malicious (i.e. they are not trying to apologize or make friends), that does not sound like a problem for software. That sounds like a problem for moderators.

Personally I had never conceived of the idea that anyone might "like" a post sarcastically!

Sorry, that's not what the Ignore function does. It simply hides the messages of a member you don't wish to see. In your Profile, under Look and Layout, you can choose to hide the posts of ignored members as well.

Ignore a member does not affect them, only what you see.

Is there a way to set it so that if you ignote someone, their quoted posts are also invisible to you? I know other forums offer this. Also, it makes sense that if you are ignoring someone then you don't want to see their posts if they are quoted by other members, right?

Not sure if others would see a possible gain from this but is there a way to integrate in the profile a button for the posts that you have liked. Well, on my Mac, one can paste one of their emojis onto here (though a bit time consuming), so for you:  👼 😇 [baby angel and smiling face with halo].

Interestingly, I see the emoticons on my phone, but not on the laptop. And thanks for the aid, PD!

Very interesting!

Many thanks to the administrators for addressing the issue!   8)

When trying to change my profile, I am getting an error message saying "HTML tags are not allowed."

There are no HTML tags in what I'm changing. In fact I was getting rid of one in my signature. The only remotely HTML-type thing remaining is the URL to my blog, which is in the field that specifically says it's for containing a URL.

I don't think this has been mentioned in this thread, so I just wanted to share something I found tonight.

Let's say there is a thread I am currently posting in that is no longer fun to participate in and I don't want it listed in my new replies list. In the old version of the forum before the update, I would just keep getting updates on the thread even if I was no longer posting in it. Annoying. But I figured out tonight that now all I have to do now is click on the button at the top of the thread, just to the right of the PRINT button. This will open 4 possible options for the thread:

I then just need to choose "Not Following" and the thread will no longer show up in my unread replies list.

At least I think this is how it will work. I haven't tested it yet.

Thank you very much for this, George. I think @Madiel will be most grateful, too.

Lol. Damn right! I've complained about this loudly in the past, and I had absolutely no idea it had been solved.

Yeah, I got rid of a lot of stupid/insignifcant/not-of-interest-to-me threads in which I had the bad idea to post in the past. And I'm only too happy to finally being able to ignore all threads in which politics can (and does) pop up.  8)

The other day something happened with a thread I started that made me think about this. I accidentally locked the thread in question, but I couldn't unlock it and I had to ask for help to do it. If someone can lock the thread he/she starts, why can't he/she unlock it as well?

Good question indeed.
