Title: Top 25 Favorite Composers
Post by: Winky Willy on March 01, 2012, 12:52:34 PM
Okay, how about we don't be so narrow and focus on just one composer! Let's have everybody's top 25!

Actually, just the opposite of being narrow.  You had every composer of music ever on Planet Earth to choose from.

However, a top 25 is also fine.

I forgot all about Mozart, even after lamenting his lack of votes for no. 1.  Guess that Mozart is easy to forget as his silky music just flows into the atmosphere.

21 Ligeti
22 Schoenberg
23 Stravinsky
24 Berg
25 Ives

Something like that, anyway.... I want Satie and pre-indeterminate Cage in there too, however. And a few more would be helpful. Can we have 40?

I'm seriously surprised that Martinu didn't make onto your list, Greg. R. Strauss was one of the first composers I heard too but I quickly abandoned him as I thought so much of his music was just hot air. I have only recently started to appreciate a few of his works again. Alpine Symphony being probably my favorite of his tone poems with other works like Der Rosenkavalier, Elektra, Salome, Four Last Songs, and the concerti for horn and oboe.

Well, it was tough to make, I'm a Martinu fan, no doubt. And ironically, when I made an initial list I had Martinu, Vaughan Williams and Bruckner on there, but had to narrow it down. Tough names to remove for sure.

I'll always be in love with his tone poems, but as you explore his career it becomes apparent that most of his greatest accomplishments came from other genres, but being concert hall favorites Strauss' tone poems make great show-pieces and and a great introduction to his ability. And you named some great pieces there  ;D

Today (likely to change without notice :) ):

1   Mahler
2   Beethoven
3   Shostakovich
4   Dvorak
5   Stravinsky
6   Martinu
7   Sibelius
8   Bruckner
9   Haydn
10   Rachmaninov
11   Brahms
12   Bartok
13   Bach
14   Korngold
15   Schubert
16   Prokofiev
17   Schoenberg
18   Copland
19   Villa-Lobos
20   Hindemith
21   Messiaen
22   Ravel
23   Roussel
24   Milhaud
25   Lutoslawski

I listen to music from all eras - Middle Ages to contemporary, by composers both familiar and obscure.  And I love almost all of it!  In the end, though, I seem to gravitate (mostly) to the best-known, best-loved composers.  Do I enjoy Holmboe?  Tubin?  Florent Schmitt?  Roger Sessions?  Absolutely!  Do I love them more than Mahler, or Brahms, or even Lutoslawski?  Probably not...

Pretty much holds up. Might want to wedge Holmboe in there, the better I get to know the string quartets, and the nore I hear of the chamber concerti.

I'm trying to compile which ones from my list were left-handed, near-sighted, preferred wine to beer, homosexual, naturally curly hair, vegetarian or had brown eyes.

But in the meantime, I'll present this..

Austrian - 5
British - 5
French - 4
American - 4
German - 3
Russian - 2
Italian - 2

Interesting.  When I add up the year of birth for each of my 25 composers, comes out to an average year of 1829.

That falls in between Bruckner and Brahms.  How fitting!   :)

25 is a lot, so it gets fuzzy in the 11-25 section

1 Beethoven

2-10
JS Bach
Haydn
Mozart
Brahms
Schubert
Schumann
Handel
Bartok
Mahler

11-25
Chopin
Purcell
Wagner
Berg
Mendelssohn
Bruckner
Dvorak
Monteverdi
Shostakovich
Stravinsky
Ravel
Debussy
Verdi
Vivaldi
Zelenka

but there are lots more like the last few. Often I like a few pieces a lot but don't even know or don't much care for the rest. E.g. Franck's is one of my favorite violin sonatas and I also like the piano quintet a lot but don't care much for the symphony or that choral+fugue and I don't really know his organ music and the symphonic poems.

Josquin

Shostakovich
Tchaikovsky
Mahler
Bruckner
Chopin
Debussy
Bach
Beethoven
Haydn
Mozart
Prokofiev
Rimsky-Korsakov
Khachaturian
Hovhaness
Yoshimatsu
Reich
Ravel
Vaughan Williams
Schubert
Schumann
Strauss (R)
Liszt

Hopefully I didn't forget anybody - It wasn't easy to think of many more after I listed about 17 names so that's probably the point at which I stop to "love" and more or less "like".

Just a snapshot for now, as my tastes and knowledge base are still at a fairly undeveloped stage. The first five are what keep bringing me back for the most concentrated listening. The remaining 20 are in no particular order and more subject to change (though the order is as they came to me, so that may be somewhat significant):

Beethoven
Brahms
Bartok
Shostakovich
Carter

Webern
Schoenberg
Chopin
Messiaen
Ligeti
Sibelius
Nielsen
Liszt
Mahler
Weinberg
Berlioz
Sibelius

Kurtag
Prokofiev
Debussy
Schubert

Stravinsky

Well, this is my list. It certainly is not cast in stone, as there are perhaps 10 or 15 names that will probably never fall from it, but others that could at any given time be substituted by names that regrettably didn't make it on this occasion (e.g. Liszt, Prokofiev, Telemann,...  :( ).

Johann Sebastan Bach
Alban Berg
Luciano Berio
Pierre Boulez
Anton Bruckner
Ferruccio Busoni
Ellliott Carter
Luigi Dallapiccola
Claude Debussy
George Enescu
Manuel de Falla
Joseph Haydn
Ernst Křenek
Bruno Maderna
Gustav Mahler
Olivier Messiaen
Claudio Monteverdi
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Jean-Philippe Rameau
Maurice Ravel
Florent Schmitt
Arnold Schoenberg
Karlheinz Stockhausen
Igor Stravinsky
Richard Wagner

In strict alphabetical order (but the last name towers well above the rest, I confess  ;) )..

Schumann
Liszt
Brahms
Faure
Debussy
Mahler
Schoenberg
Berg

If we're going to fine him, I'd rather it was for his peculiar habit of resurrecting threads that are years old. This one has relatively recent activity. In the last few days Alberich has pulled up ones that haven't had anyone posting on them for 5 years or more. The favourite French composers poll had closed in 2008.

It's as if he doesn't want to talk to any of us. Only to ghosts.

I disagree with that attitude. Threads don't have an expiration date. Incidentally, it'd be nice if newbies searched the forum, resurrected old threads and added their opinions about a previously discussed topic there, instead of starting new ones all the time.

Some polls clearly DO have an expiration date. That's kind of what got my attention, the fact that a poll thread was resurrected and the poll had closed 8.5 years ago.

Plus, anyone who did vote on a poll however many years ago that's still open, and has changed their mind, can't express their new opinion.

There's a reason why these polls have been dormant for years and years. I'm not against threads in general being resurrected if it's an ongoing topic, but when it comes to polls, I think it'd be far better to make a fresh one and perhaps link/refer back to the old one. It would then be possible to compare old results to new ones.

Polls are snapshots in time. That's what they're supposed to be. After all, we don't keep accumulating votes from previous elections.

When it comes to polls, I agree (not applicable, however, when one simply wants to add his opinion to the discussion which may have been going on even after the votes have closed and not necessarily start a new poll).

My response was to your comment about "resurrecting threads that are years old" - like this one.

I also like Yoshimatsu's Symphony 1 'Kamui-Chikap' and my other two favourites are Symphony 2 (the first one I heard) and Symphony 3. I have two different recordings of the first two symphonies. As with Hovhaness (another composer I admire) critics can be quite disparaging about their music but I derive much emotional pleasure from the symphonies of both composers and rate them highly.
Title: Re: Top 25 Favorite Composers

I am always for fewer threads. Especially in such "light" polling/lists stuff it makes no sense to make a forum even more unwieldy by more of similar/identical threads. I think the cluttering with 5 2-page "favorite x"-threads is worse than one such 10-page-thread. So there is nothing wrong with "resurrecting" them.

*shrug* We're in The Polling Station. All of the threads that I've seen Alberich resurrecting are in The Polling Station. As far as I'm concerned they're all polls.

I wasn't aware it was a criminal offence to resurrect polls. Go on, sue me. One would think that these polls would have been removed out of existence if it really were so wrong to bring them back.

I am glad you resurrected this thread and generally like to see an old thread get new activity.  I just bumped an old thread, myself: "Your five favorite Mahler Movements" (or something like that).  No harm; no foul.

For sure - I don't pay too much attention to the critics and Im not ashamed to admit I love both Composers.

Very nice list indeed, that, Jessop. And yeah, 25 really is a silly number - it's too much for just the most essential core favourites, but not enough for a useful representation of a wider selection.

In order, but I'll admit that order becomes pretty arbitrary closer to the end.

Also, massive gap between the top 2 and the rest, as anyone who's followed my listening habits around here can attest.

The rest of the core favourites, roughly in order. So ones nearer the top are more likely to eventually break into the top 25. Put together, I guess these are "my top 51 composers"

Nono
Berio
Saunders (R)
Medtner
Ferrari
Prokofiev
Mendelssohn
Carter
Rădulescu
Lachenmann
Roslavets
Gerhard
Lutosławski
Schoenberg
Janáček
Skalkottas
Poulenc
Tchaikovsky
Ustvolskaya
Xenakis
Poppe
Fullman
Kurtág
Bruckner
Dutilleux
Szymanowski

Here you go COAG. It is not my list, but I have tried to trim your list within reason by using four guiding principles:

(1) you have always been faithful to The Motherland (in your case, Australia), so Lim/Dean/Pateras must stay.

(2) composers may be removed based on fundamental similarity (for instance, I painfully removed Dufourt in hopes that one early French spectralist might suffice.

(3) quality over quantity, but quality was already here... so QUANTITY OF QUALITY it is... sorry Isabel :/

(4) choosing from these... this hurts me more than it hurts you.

You're welcome.

What Ligetinwould you recommend? He's a composer whom I would like to explore further. I only really know 'Atmospheres' and 'Lux Aeterna' from '2001: A Space Odyssey' and have his Violin Concerto on Chandos.

Ligeti's music ranges from the ethereal to the downright quirky and bizarre. MI lists some great works mostly from his middle period, and to add to that you might like to listen to 'Sippal Dobbhal Navhsbdjddkkekdifod (I can't spell it)' from his late period, Nonsense Madrigals (late period), Cello Sonata (early) and 6 Bagatelles for Wind Quintet (early).

Not sure what would work for you.  I had an easier time with his solo piano and chamber music than with his larger scale work, and liked the DG box more than the competing Warner box.

BTW, in a true brain fart, I forgot to include Haydn in my list.

I probably posted a list back when this thread was new, but my listening has changed this year, so here's my current list, roughly chronologically, of the composers I have been listening to more than others - but it doesn't amount to 25.

Machaut
Dufay
Ockeghem
Josquin des Prez
Gesualdo
Beethoven
Schubert
Schumann
Liszt
Brahms
Faure
Debussy
Mahler
Schoenberg
Berg
Ives
Ravel
Stravinsky
Poulenc
Durufle
Shostakovich
M. Weinberg
K. Meyer

;)

Can't believe I forgot my two "most favorite":  Morton Feldman and John Cage.  So, I made it to 25 after all.

;)

Nah, I'll stick with my previous list of 17 names.

There's a long list of composers I think about expanding my collection for, and that might start happening a bit more with the next shopping expedition. But really, I have this tendency to want to explore in more depth those composers I'm already interested in.

One thing I've noticed is that I sometimes seem to hit veins of music that even GMG'ers aren't very familiar with. While everyone is talking about the orchestral music of this or that composer I know nothing about, I mention some piece of Beethoven's early chamber music for a relatively novel combination of instruments and get greeted with silence.

Oh, I don't mean recently. When I've talked about the string trios, or the op.25 Serenade. At some point I asked about the works for piano duet (which I haven't heard, but want) and there wasn't a big reaction.

These deliberately eccentric new performances by Mustonen:

Very staccato, very resistant to traditional far-sighted phrasing, with plenty of power but a lighter, flintier, more percussive kind. Will appeal to Bartók enthusiasts, maybe. I'm not sure if I like or recommend it, except to people who think they've heard every possible Prokofiev concerto interpretation and want to discover something totally different.

I have a list of "most important composers to me" (quoted) but figured I should try making a list of the 25 I love the most, which is slightly different.

A top 25 list is perforce quite conventional and reveals very little. It's the 26-50 ranking that stimulates the mind and forces to make hard choices  8).

It doesn't matter what quota we put on any of these lists, someone talks about why they can't stick to the quota.

Imo, much more revelatory than a list of favorite composers is a list of favorite periods. For me, that would be Romanticism, Classical and Baroque, in order (allowing for the vagueness and ex post facto definition in each case).

The list reflects the composers best represented in my collection but I also have a fair amount of renaissance and baroque music - Vivaldi almost made it to the list but I haven't been listening to him for a while. I have quite a large collection of British music but RVW, Elgar and Purcell stand out. I also like French music but again Berlioz is the only French composer I would consider for my top 25 - Ravel and Faure would probably make it into 26 - 50. I have a fair amount of 20th century music but most of that is from the first half (roughly) of the century. A few years ago Shostakovich would have made the list but my interest has waned recently - no idea why.

I beg to differ. If I make such listings they are very conventional up to about 15 but seem to become rather arbitrary already around 20 and I could not be bothered to seriously try 26-50. Beyond 30 I would rarely have a strongly held opinion at all if a certain composer should be 35 or rather 50.

Well, I partially agree, in that the thing I find most interesting about these lists is the degree to which the composers are widely spread in time or tightly bound together. Some people's lists cover several centuries, others have a big cluster of composers from only a generation or two.

Ah, this is back...

This time, I'm just going to list the 23 composers for whom I have enough works recordings that they got their own page in the spreadsheet...

Are these all my favourites? I don't know, but they must have been sufficiently interesting to me that I acquired a reasonable number of discs (though this does slightly favour composers who wrote small works, you get more of them per disc).

Bach

Looks like 28, but I'm leaving it ....

Truth is, I don't really listen to Shostakovich's music nearly as often as I used to. Of course, I don't doubt that he's a great composer, but his often angst-ridden style isn't something I really gravitate towards these days. The same applies to my relationship with Mahler's music.

I can certainly understand this and I sympathize with it. I seem to be heading in the opposite direction as you. I've only really come around to Mahler or Shostakovich in the past 5-6 years. Their music scratches a particular itch and I find them hugely satisfying. What's interesting is I can barely make through a Pettersson symphony (with the bold exception of the 6th, 7th and 8th symphonies) and yet I can listen to Shostakovich or even Schnittke with no problems. :-\ I guess it is perhaps because they have a certain aesthetic that I find alluring. But I will also say that there is some heartbreakingly gorgeous music in Shostakovich and Mahler. For me, how could anything match the beauty of say Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen from Mahler's song cycle Rückert-Lieder for example. Damn, now I want to listen to this work! ;D

Well, 25 is more reasonable!  :)

In addition to my 10 here (which I had posted in the other thread):

Vaughan Williams
Sibelius
Janacek
Bartok
Kodaly
Mozart
Dvorak
Shostakovich
Chopin
Debussy

Ravel
Bach
Martinu
Rachmaninov
Tchaikovsky
Schubert
Schumann
Grieg
Handel
Beethoven
Haydn
Brahms
Fauré

Last two...Not certain who I would pick for those.  :-\

Note:  I wasn't thinking about opera and/or vocal music here for the most part--with the exception of Handel who just jumped in there on his own!  :D  Others from my list would work too.  As another aside, *I love works for piano and cello so that figured in strongly though, again, I like other works by some of the composers too; for example, I love Shostakovich's Cello Suite No. 2, his Cello Concerto No. 1 but also love his Symphony No. 5.  Love a number of works for solo piano and also piano concertos (Grieg as an example for both of these).

*Edit:  And how could I forget to mention works for violin!

Order in which they occurred to me and based largely on what I am currently playing, more than anything else. I guess if I am playing them most, I broadly am enjoying them most. I've filtered out those I am playing a lot, but who probably haven't earned enough of a place in my affections yet to displace these. I'm thinking of folk like W Schuman, Kernis, Barber, Aho, Lloyd, Kallstenius, Nørgård, Bræin, Glass, Rehnqvist ...I know I'm missing lots of big guns, and lots with whom I should be familiar, but I'm not. Where is Mahler? I need to revisit him, clearly. It also strikes me how 'symphony heavy' my listening is. Anyway, idiosyncratic as it may be, here are mine atm.

Arnold
Tubin
Holmboe
Diamond
Hovhaness
Bax
RVW
Vasks
Shostakovich
Pettersson
Rautavaara
Beethoven
Pavlova
Rubbra
Nielsen
Sibelius
Prokofiev
Glazunov
Kancheli
Hanson
Bruckner
Tippett
Hindemith
Rosenberg
Kalnins

It also interests how few have Havergal Brian in their top 25, despite his seeming popularity and the length of listing in his thread. Why is that?

That would be because 90% of the posts in the massive Brian thread come from 2 or 3 people, and as one of them once told me when I was new to GMG, "we repeat ourselves a lot". Regardless, it's an impressive thread, of "Gothic" proportions.

Hmm, let me try this... no particular order:

Maurice Ravel
Robert Schumann
Ludwig van Beethoven
Franz Schubert
Johannes Brahms
Johann Sebastian Bach
Anton Webern
Anton Bruckner
Gustav Mahler
Erik Satie
Alexander Scriabin
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Arvo Pärt
Pierre Boulez
Morton Feldman
Frédéric Chopin
Claude Debussy
George Frideric Handel
Joseph Haydn
Sergei Rachmaninov
Max Reger
Camille Saint-Saëns
Alfred Schnittke
Arnold Schoenberg
Jean Sibelius

Subject to change as I get older and wiser, or otherwise...

As for the absence of Miaskovsky, that's only because of lack of familiarity 🙂

Not the same thing but I looked over the music I've been listening to the for the past several months and it looks like my most played composers have been

Bach
Elgar
Schubert
Mozart
Shostakovich

Those are not my top just my top of 2021.

Bruckner

Hindemith

Kalnins
Sallinen (26)

It also interests how few have Havergal Brian in their top 25, despite his seeming popularity and the length of listing in his thread. Why is that?

Edit: 21 August, 17.05

I sometimes wonder whether I am the same person from month to month, when I read these lists. I know I listen to a lot of music compared to most people (apart from the members of this august group, amongst whom I am a mere listening minnow and knowledge novice), but my likes and loves shift and change massively.

Anyway, here is the November 2nd version of the truth.

Am I allowed to place Elena Ruehr and Peter Maxwell Davies in the hinterland, even though Ruehr makes it just for her SQs and PMD is a great rediscovery that I don't understand, makes little sense to me yet, and I am still only feeling the edges for his music? Does airtime and a compelling desire to revisit make a favourite?

It doesn't really matter.

Always encouraging to see someone who has such a great appreciation for the wide variety of fine music written during the 20th and 21st centuries. The 20th century - well, the first 60 or so years of it, anyway - is my "desert island" period of classical music. Though, I certainly wouldn't want to be without the music of the Classical and Romantic eras!

I do love it. My entry point to classical music was the same as most people of my generation and social background for whom such music wasn't usual or particularly encouraged ... Mozart, Beethoven, Handel, Vivaldi, and later, Bruckner, Schubert, Dvorak, and their ilk. I guess in the same way that lots of people who read poetry are initially introduced to Romantic era poets before finding that others also exist.

Although these were the gateway for me, it's the last century or so where I find almost all my current listening. Same is probably true of preferred poetry, actually, but less exclusively.

Thanks, Ilaria. I love Wagner, but I don't listen to him too often because of time constraints and the fact there are so many other composers I enjoy listening to in addition to his own music. I feel bad, now that I'm thinking about it, as I left off Bruckner, Liszt and, of course, Wagner.

No problem, I was only joking; I perfectly understand and I can share the feeling, there would be so many composers who are worth exploring, but a lifetime is not enough for music. That's the downside of writing top lists, that other great composers are left off.

4-10, ditto

Haydn
Beethoven
Mendelssohn
Schumann
Brahms
Tchaikovsky
Rachmaninoff

11-25, ditto

Telemann
Domenico Scarlatti
CPE Bach
Joh. Chr. Bach
Boccherini
Cimarosa

And 5 runners-up: the (Viennese) Strauss family (cheating, I know, but I can't help it), Offenbach, Sibelius, Medtner,, Bortkiewicz.

Make it 50 and I could probably come up with a definitive list.  ;D

All that needs to be said.

Fine, then let me rephrase the question: why should now have all your favourite music?

Because there is a value judgement involved in looking at your own list of favourites, observing that "only" 10 out of 25 are living (which is actually a pretty high number), and indicating your desire to increase that number.

So that's what I'm asking about, your apparent desire to "fix" your own music tastes. Because that only makes sense if you're measuring against some standard that indicates a need to maximise the number of living composers in your list. I'm trying to understand why someone would look at a list of the music they enjoy and care in that way about when that music was written.

Ah! For me, it is really a confluence of factors that has led me to this decision.

First, I am striving to eliminate repetition and redundancy as a major aspect of my nonwork life. My job (I am a professor) consists of lots and lots of repetition in teaching, in research, in reading, in meetings, etc., so if I can eliminate that in the other areas of my life; I view that as a major plus.

Second, I've recently rewatched some George Steiner interviews for work, and they have stuck with me in a radically different way - specifically his ruminations about the music he wouldn't hear, the books he wouldn't read, the places he wouldn't see, and I have taken that as my heart's guiding philosophy in that I will no longer return to what I know and will instead stretch for those things that I don't, and I view this as an overall enrichment of my life.

Third, I like that my money is going to a living artist rather than to an institution (this is a much longer and larger argument that I will not get into on this public forum given the nature of some of the posters here).

Fourth, I love having to search the music (and art) out. I take no pleasure in not having to work.

I think that is enough for now. :-)

Okay, that does make more sense. I guess though I hadn't seen that listening to more recent music would necessarily translate into it actually being favourite. I certainly go through periods of deliberate exploration, and hope to find things that I love, but also encounter plenty of disappointments. I guess if I was more consistent the odds would improve.

Meanwhile, in the last 6-9 months, life circumstances seem to have pushed me to crave reliability and on the classical side of things I seem to have largely stuck with about 5 composers over and over. Which does worry me occasionally, but it's not as if I will run out of Haydn to explore any time soon.

Seeing and hearing and meeting living composers is great. I just don't tend to do that in "classical" music.

Whereas I've seen Tori Amos perform 14 times and spoken to her 8...

It's been a few years since I've made a list, so here goes! ;)

Dvořák
Sibelius
Atterberg
Rachmaninoff
Prokofiev

Poulenc
Saint-Saëns
Lloyd
Vaughan Williams
Nielsen

Brahms
Casella
Mendelssohn
Braga Santos
Barber

Respighi
Andreae
Beethoven
Arnold
Damase

Bax
Janáček
Elgar
Kabalevsky
Suk

I'm still quite content with this list, though I think I'll take Damase off (I still love his Symphonie dearly, though) and replace him with someone slightly more famous, like uh.....Schubert. :D

Top 3, chronologically

Mozart
Schubert
Chopin

4-10, ditto

Haydn
Beethoven
Mendelssohn
Schumann
Brahms
Tchaikovsky
Rachmaninoff

11-25, ditto

Vivaldi
Telemann
Domenico Scarlatti
CPE Bach
Joh. Chr. Bach
Boccherini
Cimarosa
Auber
Rossini
Donizetti
Bellini
Verdi
Camille Saint-Saens
Massenet
Faure

And 5 runners-up: the (Viennese) Strauss family (cheating, I know, but I can't help it), Offenbach, Sibelius, Medtner,, Bortkiewicz.

Make it 50 and I could probably come up with a definitive list.  ;D

I'm still perfectly happy with this list.

Rather surprised to see Dvořák absent from your list, Andrei! Considering your love for unfailingly melodic Romantic music. ;)

A difficult choice for sure! In hindsight, I should have kept Bax since I love a greater percentage of his output that I do Strauss'. But recently I've been so enamored with a select few works by Strauss (mostly Don Quixote and the suite from Der Rosenkavalier) that I found it difficult to exclude him from my list. ;)

Let's see;

Johannes Brahms
Johann Sebastian Bach
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Gustav Mahler
Franz Schubert

Ludwig van Beethoven
Robert Schumann
Anton Bruckner
George Frideric Handel
Maurice Ravel

Jean Sibelius
Claude Debussy
Ralph Vaughan Williams
Malcolm Arnold
Joseph Haydn

Anton Webern
Pierre Boulez
Arvo Pärt
Felix Mendelssohn
Dmitri Shostakovich

Camille Saint-Saëns
Alfred Schnittke
Antonio Vivaldi
Gabriel Fauré
Edward Elgar

No order, and those groups of five are not tiers in terms of my favoritism of them, though the first two groups, being the first ones that came to mind, are more easily accessible as being very close to my heart. This list omits many great composers who in the past have been major obsessions, but have been less in my orbit in recent years: people like my namesake Alexander Scriabin, as well as Frédéric Chopin, Erik Satie, Morton Feldman etc.

I might delete this list as I look at it later and find it not satisfactorily to my taste  ;D
