I forgot all about Mozart, even after lamenting his lack of votes for no. 1. Guess that Mozart is easy to forget as his silky music just flows into the atmosphere.

I'm seriously surprised that Martinu didn't make onto your list, Greg. R. Strauss was one of the first composers I heard too but I quickly abandoned him as I thought so much of his music was just hot air. I have only recently started to appreciate a few of his works again.
Alpine Symphony being probably my favorite of his tone poems with other works like
Der Rosenkavalier,
Elektra,
Salome,
Four Last Songs, and the concerti for horn and oboe.

Well, it was tough to make, I'm a Martinu fan, no doubt. And ironically, when I made an initial list I had Martinu, Vaughan Williams and Bruckner on there, but had to narrow it down. Tough names to remove for sure.

I could never RVW, Bruckner, or Martinu out of my list as they've been crucial composers for me and helped me appreciate this music.

Alpine Symphony being probably my favorite of his tone poems with other works like Der Rosenkavalier, Elektra, Salome, Four Last Songs, and the concerti for horn and oboe.
I'll always be in love with his tone poems, but as you explore his career it becomes apparent that most of his greatest accomplishments came from other genres, but being concert hall favorites Strauss' tone poems make great show-pieces and and a great introduction to his ability. And you named some great pieces there ;D

but there are lots more like the last few. Often I like a few pieces a lot but don't even know or don't much care for the rest. E.g. Franck's is one of my favorite violin sonatas and I also like the piano quintet a lot but don't care much for the symphony or that choral+fugue and I don't really know his organ music and the symphonic poems.

I disagree with that attitude. Threads don't have an expiration date. Incidentally, it'd be nice if newbies searched the forum, resurrected old threads and added their opinions about a previously discussed topic there, instead of starting new ones all the time.
I feel bad about leaving Walton off my list. Nice to see Yoshimatsu mentioned as I very much enjoy his music.

Some polls clearly DO have an expiration date. That's kind of what got my attention, the fact that a poll thread was resurrected and the poll had closed 8.5 years ago.
Plus, anyone who did vote on a poll however many years ago that's still open, and has changed their mind, can't express their new opinion.
There's a reason why these polls have been dormant for years and years. I'm not against threads
in general being resurrected if it's an ongoing topic, but when it comes to polls, I think it'd be far better to make a fresh one and perhaps link/refer back to the old one. It would then be possible to compare old results to new ones.
Polls are snapshots in time. That's what they're supposed to be. After all, we don't keep accumulating votes from previous elections.

When it comes to polls, I agree (not applicable, however, when one simply wants to add his opinion to the discussion which may have been going on even after the votes have closed and not necessarily start a new poll).

I also like Yoshimatsu's Symphony 1 'Kamui-Chikap' and my other two favourites are Symphony 2 (the first one I heard) and Symphony 3. I have two different recordings of the first two symphonies. As with Hovhaness (another composer I admire) critics can be quite disparaging about their music but I derive much emotional pleasure from the symphonies of both composers and rate them highly.
I am always for fewer threads. Especially in such "light" polling/lists stuff it makes no sense to make a forum even more unwieldy by more of similar/identical threads. I think the cluttering with 5 2-page "favorite x"-threads is worse than one such 10-page-thread. So there is nothing wrong with "resurrecting" them.

Very nice list indeed, that, Jessop. And yeah, 25 really is a silly number - it's too much for just the most essential core favourites, but not enough for a useful representation of a wider selection.

Nothing at all wrong with resurrecting this - or any - dormant thread. I think it's kinda fun looking at some of the old names/posters who've faded away and into the sunset. Sometimes I even see an old post of mine that I'd completely forgotten.

(1) you have always been faithful to The Motherland (in your case, Australia), so Lim/Dean/Pateras must stay.
(2) composers may be removed based on fundamental similarity (for instance, I painfully removed Dufourt in hopes that one early French spectralist might suffice.
(3) quality over quantity, but quality was already here... so QUANTITY OF QUALITY it is... sorry Isabel :/
(4) choosing from these... this hurts me more than it hurts you.

Ligeti's music ranges from the ethereal to the downright quirky and bizarre. MI lists some great works mostly from his middle period, and to add to that you might like to listen to 'Sippal Dobbhal Navhsbdjddkkekdifod (I can't spell it)' from his late period, Nonsense Madrigals (late period), Cello Sonata (early) and 6 Bagatelles for Wind Quintet (early).

Not sure what would work for you. I had an easier time with his solo piano and chamber music than with his larger scale work, and liked the DG box more than the competing Warner box.

Both of them perhaps the best each composer has done IMO. Though (forgive me if I make myself at all tiresome on this point) I greatly prefer the sextet version of the

Both of them perhaps the best each composer has done IMO. Though (forgive me if I make myself at all tiresome on this point) I greatly prefer the sextet version of the Loops.

There's a long list of composers I think about expanding my collection for, and that might start happening a bit more with the next shopping expedition. But really, I have this tendency to want to explore in more depth those composers I'm already interested in.
One thing I've noticed is that I sometimes seem to hit veins of music that even GMG'ers aren't very familiar with. While everyone is talking about the orchestral music of this or that composer I know nothing about, I mention some piece of Beethoven's early chamber music for a relatively novel combination of instruments and get greeted with silence.

Imo, much more revelatory than a list of favorite composers is a list of favorite periods. For me, that would be Romanticism, Classical and Baroque, in order (allowing for the vagueness and ex post facto definition in each case).

The list reflects the composers best represented in my collection but I also have a fair amount of renaissance and baroque music - Vivaldi almost made it to the list but I haven't been listening to him for a while. I have quite a large collection of British music but RVW, Elgar and Purcell stand out. I also like French music but again Berlioz is the only French composer I would consider for my top 25 - Ravel and Faure would probably make it into 26 - 50. I have a fair amount of 20th century music but most of that is from the first half (roughly) of the century. A few years ago Shostakovich would have made the list but my interest has waned recently - no idea why.

I beg to differ. If I make such listings they are very conventional up to about 15 but seem to become rather arbitrary already around 20 and I could not be bothered to seriously try 26-50. Beyond 30 I would rarely have a strongly held opinion at all if a certain composer should be 35 or rather 50.

Well, I partially agree, in that the thing I find most interesting about these lists is the degree to which the composers are widely spread in time or tightly bound together. Some people's lists cover several centuries, others have a big cluster of composers from only a generation or two.

I can certainly understand this and I sympathize with it. I seem to be heading in the opposite direction as you. I've only really come around to Mahler or Shostakovich in the past 5-6 years. Their music scratches a particular itch and I find them hugely satisfying. What's interesting is I can barely make through a Pettersson symphony (with the bold exception of the 6th, 7th and 8th symphonies) and yet I can listen to Shostakovich or even Schnittke with no problems. :-\ I guess it is perhaps because they have a certain aesthetic that I find alluring. But I will also say that there is some heartbreakingly gorgeous music in Shostakovich and Mahler. For me, how could anything match the beauty of say
Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen from Mahler's song cycle
Rückert-Lieder for example. Damn, now I want to listen to this work! ;D
Honestly I don't have any serious arguments with either of my old lists. Maybe one minor change but it's debatable.

Order in which they occurred to me and based largely on what I am currently playing, more than anything else. I guess if I am playing them most, I broadly am enjoying them most. I've filtered out those I am playing a lot, but who probably haven't earned enough of a place in my affections yet to displace these. I'm thinking of folk like W Schuman, Kernis, Barber, Aho, Lloyd, Kallstenius, Nørgård, Bræin, Glass, Rehnqvist ...I know I'm missing lots of big guns, and lots with whom I should be familiar, but I'm not. I stand in in esteemed company. But yes, you are quite correct. We have lots of crossover, and I rarely see a post by Vandermolen that I can't relate to!

Always encouraging to see someone who has such a great appreciation for the wide variety of fine music written during the 20th and 21st centuries. The 20th century - well, the first 60 or so years of it, anyway - is my "desert island" period of classical music. Though, I certainly wouldn't want to be without the music of the Classical and Romantic eras!

I do love it. My entry point to classical music was the same as most people of my generation and social background for whom such music wasn't usual or particularly encouraged ... Mozart, Beethoven, Handel, Vivaldi, and later, Bruckner, Schubert, Dvorak, and their ilk. I guess in the same way that lots of people who read poetry are initially introduced to Romantic era poets before finding that others also exist.
Although these were the gateway for me, it's the last century or so where I find almost all my current listening. Same is probably true of preferred poetry, actually, but less exclusively.

No problem, I was only joking; I perfectly understand and I can share the feeling, there would be so many composers who are worth exploring,
but a lifetime is not enough for music. That's the downside of writing top lists, that other great composers are left off.

Because there is a value judgement involved in looking at your own list of favourites, observing that "only" 10 out of 25 are living (which is actually a pretty high number), and indicating your desire to increase that number.
So that's what I'm asking about, your apparent desire to "fix" your own music tastes. Because that only makes sense if you're measuring against some standard that indicates a need to maximise the number of living composers in your list. I'm trying to understand why someone would look at a list of the music they enjoy and care in that way about when that music was written.

Okay, that does make more sense. I guess though I hadn't seen that listening to more recent music would
necessarily translate into it actually being favourite. I certainly go through periods of deliberate exploration, and hope to find things that I love, but also encounter plenty of disappointments. I guess if I was more consistent the odds would improve.
Meanwhile, in the last 6-9 months, life circumstances seem to have pushed me to crave reliability and on the classical side of things I seem to have largely stuck with about 5 composers over and over. Which does worry me occasionally, but it's not as if I will run out of Haydn to explore any time soon.
Seeing and hearing and meeting living composers is great. I just don't tend to do that in "classical" music.
Whereas I've seen Tori Amos perform 14 times and spoken to her 8...

A difficult choice for sure! In hindsight, I should have kept Bax since I love a greater percentage of his output that I do Strauss'. But recently I've been so enamored with a select few works by Strauss (mostly
Don Quixote and the suite from
Der Rosenkavalier) that I found it difficult to exclude him from my list. ;)

I might delete this list as I look at it later and find it not satisfactorily to my taste ;D
