A few of his songs are broadcast on radio tonight: I've never heard any of the music of this key figure in music history. Any thoughts?

I believe that he invented the opera, and ushered in the start of the Baroque era ........

Sometimes I start from the bottom of the page, hoping I can understand what's going on without having to read EVERYTHING (didn't even TRY with 71 pages of Elgar).
