Any suggestions for Schumann? I heard Martin Helmchen's Gesänge der Frühe when that came out and I wasn't crazy about it. Maybe unfairly to Helmchen, for me Dina Ugorskaja's Schumann album is one of the greatest Schumann albums I've ever heard.

Have you heard any of Tobias Koch?

Schubert: Impromptus

Ronald Brautigam (fortepiano)

Schubert's eight impromptus were written in 1827, though only the first two were published during the composer's lifetime. The D899 set is structured along the lines of a Classical sonata, whilst the D935 set is rather less conventional in form: the third piece is is a series of variations on 'Rosamunde', and the set concludes with a dazzling scherzo. Brautigam plays a Paul McNulty copy of a Conrad Graf fortepiano dating from around the time that the pieces were composed.

Any good HIP/PI Mendelssohn symphonies?

Jo498

I only know Spering/op.111 (Naive? might have appeared on different French labels) for "Lobgesang" which makes one of the best cases for a piece I find somewhat problematic. Not sure I have heard any of the instrumental symphonies with old instruments.

Concerto Koln for the string symphonies.  I have some favorite PI conductors that tackled the main symphonies, but I just never listened to those recordings.

I have liked the Concerto Koln recordings that I've heard.  I have some of them.

This is a fairly new release, but I can't say what it's like: having two versions on the same CD is a bit too completist even for me.

Yes, the Concerto Köln string symphonies I forgot about, but AFAIK they didn't record any of the later ones. Fey did, although with modern instruments. Norrington and Brüggen recorded at least 3+4.

Frans Brüggen did 3, 4 & 5 with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century.

Unfortunately not a complete cycle but really good!

Thanks for the heads up, this kind of release is exactly my cup of tea!
