Title: Bug Report 2024
Post by: Dungeon Master on January 27, 2024, 02:49:55 PM
I have retired the Bug Report 2023 thread.

Please use this thread to report any new bugs.

The "Search within this topic/board" bug is a known issue beyond my control. It awaits a new version of the software.

Sometimes I'm asleep 😴 in a different timezone.

I checked the server status and it all looks ok. I tried a few things on the forum and everything seems pretty snappy at my end. I've just now rebooted the server (turn it off and on again (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn2FB1P_Mn8)) just to shake the cobwebs out of the system.

Is all happy good now?

Hi Rob,

Seems the same to me.

Maybe we need to clear cache or sign out/in to GMG?

OK I have done some investigating. The site is under attack from bots, one of them from China requesting hundreds of pages every minute. These bots are automated web trawlers, not necessarily malicious, they are often just scanning pages for content for search indexes, or other reasons. But they slow the legitimate access to the forum considerably.

I am going to learn how to block them at a server level. First bit of code initiated, please let me know if you notice any difference.

cheers
Rob

It takes ages before the Likes appear. This morning I tried to find those that were liked, but non of them showed it. I takes about 20-40 seconds to load a page, and had cases that it took a full minute or more. Those Bots are a aggressive bunch of Toadheads. I had a similar attack of my system 6 months ago, so I know what havoc it creates.

Quite slow here this morning (10:48 EDT in US). A good 5 seconds executing any command, whether moving to a new page or simply clicking the "Like" button.

Adding my appreciation for Rob's work, vanquishing all these bots!

I hope they are benign and not some sort of malicious attack. If they are really spiders creating an index, would it take this long for them to download the entire contents of the site for their index? On the other hand, what could an malicious actor want from this site? To gain unauthorized access to our preference for Bruckner symphonies? :)

Site seems uniformly slow at this point, requiring several seconds for a like to be registered, for quoted text to appear, to view a listing.

It's a trivial data point, but when hitting "Like," normally the site's response is instantaneous, but of late it's consistently disinstantaneous.

lol  No, what I was thinking about (and I should have stated) was that people be required to login...as in become a member in order to have access to the forum.  And have it so that one would have to prove that they were a human (so to speak) in order to register (and perhaps for subsequent logins?  That might be a bit too much though.).  Sorry, but I had thought that the unsaid part of this was obvious, but it wasn't.  :-[

Requiring people to be logged in to view the forum would make it difficult to attract potential new members to the site.

I wonder if the site software has features that can be activated to block this sort of thing. Refusing to accept a request from a given address until a fixed time has passed since the previous request (a second or two) would throttle it.

Your first comment had also crossed my mind...wondering how much it might deter people.  We classical music lovers are a determined group however!  8)  ;)

Your second point is an interesting one.  Also, is there a way to block downloading of pages/topics/threads?  Would that be possible?  Just throwing out some ideas.

But good work, Rob!  May they never come back!

Rather slow just now. Even logging on and off takes some time.

I notice that a lot of the guests look at members profiles. How is this possible? If I access the forum as a guest I'm not allowed to se any members profiles.

Taking about 5 seconds to load, even for only browsing.

(I counted 5 seconds, but bottom of page reads - Page created in 1.804 seconds with 30 queries.)

Not sure why the timing is so different, but it definitely took between 4 and 5 seconds just to load this page.

The timing is for "page generated." There may be other operations necessary before the page appears on your browser. For instance, if the server is overloaded it may take some time before the page request from your browser is recognized by the server.

Perhaps the server script counts unsuccessful attempts to see profiles the same as successful one?

The posts are in the Mozart and Favorite Tchaikovsky Symphony threads. I read them, thought "I'd like to reply to that one," maybe I just searched poorly for them at first, on my laptop. These days, though, I don't absolutely rule out garden-variety confusion on my part.

If he creates an account, one of us will approve him for sure.

Yes he has given me his reasons in PM conversations, I've communicated with him for years. Regardless he would like an account again and it appears to be a general bug as when I tried logging out and creating an account I got the same error.

Important information, this problem would prevent GMG from getting any new members, and people who are blocked from joining have no way to repair the problem (unless they have an acquaintance on GMG).

Tagging @Dungeon Master as it appears from the member list that we have not had a single new member join since April 12 (23 days ago). Unfortunately there is a possibility that the anti-bot filter measures Rob implemented on April 14 may be related - although I am only guessing based on timeframe. It could certainly be a coincidence.

Hmmm...As someone who has and wanted to be a member of the forum (or using other sites) sometimes has had problems...occasionally, I've had a hard time deciphering the "Captcha" writing.  Perhaps it's that?  Just a thought.

There is a reCaptcha anti-spam system working in the background when people try to register. I looks like version 3 of reCaptcha no longer works. I have now changed it to V2. Tested and working fine for me. Lets see if we get new registrations.
