I'm looking for a cd of Wagners non-opera music. Theres an unfinished symphony, the Faust Overture, Siegfried Idyll and a few other pieces.

Most Wagner compilation cds only feature his opera overtures and preludes. [Which I've already got]

I've had a hunt through Amazon but can't find what I'm looking for.

Can anyone recommend a good one?  :)

I think there are actually two symphonies?

Yes there are two - one in E major, one in C major. This Denon disc has both in great performances.

Great thanks. I've found it on Amazon.  :)

Any others?

I am sure I have listed his piano music before, some place here, but I  can not find it, so I do it again:

Eine Sonata für das Album von Frau M.W.
Grosse Sonata in A major
Fantasia in F# minor
Albumblatt für Frau Betty Schott

Available on Newport Classic, Thomas Lorango on the piano.

I was just listening to his solo piano music again today. I found a copy of the disc I lost a long time ago, along with Disc 2. It's with Stephen Möller at the piano, it's just terrific stuff. 3 piano sonatas, and a whole CD of other asorted solo piano stuff (including a brief little polka).

And that dude could really write a symphony. He did complete one, and revised it years later, and finished most of 2 movements of a second. I love both of these, I think they're brilliant. His 2nd Piano Sonata is also fabulous. If he had chosen another path, like to be a symphonist, I think he'd have been massively successful at it. The symphony and a half that survive really make me wish that he'd written more.

Also, not sure if you've heard his opera Die Feen. It's the only one he wrote that I actually like. Even some people that like Wagner a lot have never heard it, it usually slips under the radar. From not liking most of his operas, I have a powerful passion for his non-vocal stuff. I honestly think that his 1st symphony is among my favourite symphonies ever, I love it that much. I appear to be alone in the world on that one, but hey, it just hits me perfect for some reason. And his 2nd Piano Sonata is one I think Beethoven would have been proud to call his own.

Hi uffeviking

I can't find the Thomas Lorango but I've found this one:

by Nina Kavtaradze.

I'm very interested to hear the symphonies as the samples sound promising.

I like the disc - the performances are very committed and alert. Lots of feeling too. Will have to put it on again sometime soon.
