*Ktee-Psee was found May, 2015, a month old kitten screaming in the parking area brought by the landlord knowing I would probably take her in. In less than a year (we thought she was too young to be spayed), she got in the family way and brought us 5 more mouths to feed over and above the feral cats that altogether are about 15.

Above is just a reminder about spray which can really be terrible. Alpha males don't stick around though. They might crash at your pad for a while but something urges them to move on. We had this time and again. Sometimes the male cats would visit every other month or so, just to check out the vittles...

I hope this cat situation is all sorted. The impression I get is the cat's human staff (your roomie) is neglectful and perhaps should not be sharing their life with a cat. With any pet comes responsibilities. No domestic cat should keep throwing up fur balls; grooming (grooming gloves are best) and anti-fur ball paste will sort that. The cat litter issue could also be sorted by someone that understood (or attempted) to understand their cat's behaviour. A happy cat is fastidiously clean.

I bought a 'mouse toy' for our cat to play with. It was battery controlled and worked on carpet. However, when I opened the packet, instead of a mouse toy, it was a large black rat, of bubonic plague proportions. When I got it going our cat flew straight out of the cat flap. Even my wife was frightened of it. It went to the charity shop.

Here's a good one. Piano students going on vacation in July, so I get a phone call, "Do you know someone who can take our cat?" There is a problem anyway since they live in an apartment building close to the street and the cat, then about 2 months old, could easily get killed. The kids however were very diligent in leaving food for him, which the other neighbors compained about.
The kids were worried he might be blind since he had a running infection on both eyes. Since we have experience with this in kittens, usually keeping the area clean, lightly wiping around the eye a few times a day usually solved it. I showed them by wetting a tissue and taking some of the dried mucus from the face.
He was pretty good about coming home in the carrier box. The worry was the other cats around here, particularly the alpha female who still gives him a side swipe now and then when she can get away with it. As we are on the first floor with a garden outside, we kept him inside for some days just to get used to the premises.
He screamed everytime I went near his left eye, the source of the problem as I was to find out at the vet's, so it was not easy to clean it. I checked the internet for what to do and tried some home remedies like warm milk compresses but the unavoidable remained to take him to the clinic.
Fortunately, the day we went there was an eye specialist and both doctors said he had a congenital conditiion, the skin surrounding the sockets were inverted so the eyes could not protrude properly. But more than the the left eye had some eyelash tthat was constantly grating on the eyeball.
There was no choice than to have him operated on, as the other alternative was to have him lose his sight while continuing in pain. I wrote the parents about this, asked if they were interested in contributing to the operation fund - no answer! Oh well, some people don't feel that kind of responsibility towards animals. The ball was in our court, so our lookout.
After paying $350 and 5 visits to the vet, Puss is a lively sweetheart, purrs like a machine on my lap, could be gratitude on his part. He knows now how to open the screen in the bathroom window so lets himself in, did it just now. He gets up at the crack of dawn, scratching on the door for his breakfast of kibble, which spoils my slumber.
Was it all worth it? It sure is!

Very nice story - you were kind and he clearly appreciates it. I once, as a teenager, tended a stray male cat who had a fight injury to his side. When I bathed the wound he purred very loudly almost as if he knew that I was trying to help him. I think that my parents footed the vet's bill when we took him for a check up. My mother never stopped reminding us that it was more expensive when our own cats had kittens than when my brother and I were born. :)

It was actually an interesting learning experience. The two doctors and their assistant are French, very devoted and skilled. A congenital condition like that could never be fixed except for a medical intervention. I think they had to cut some of the skin around the eyes to open it up but it all healed in a couple of days. He was so funny when he came out of anesthesia, like he was drunk.

Whilst I was talking to her I looked at the window and outside was our cat looking at me in a very accusatory way which said 'what on earth are you doing in there?' This happened with previous cats as well. I think that this one recognises my car engine noise as even if I park the car right down the other end of the road he is invariably waiting for me.

Our cats just get in the family way. Feeding them all is becoming expensive, not to mention having to take some of them to the vet when they get ill...
KteePsee (picture shown on left two years ago when she was a kitten) did not exactly roll out the welcome mat for Puss, an adopted cat from my piano students. They couldn't take care of him anymore nor deal with his eye infection which precipitated our taking him to the vet and paying for his operation three months ago.
KP didn't bother with him too much but now swipes at him whenever she can. They were at it two nights ago and after such an incident Puss was not his normal self, rather growling and miserable. His nice purr, very musical simply stopped. I thought he may have been a little sick to begin with, seems he spit up some food on the grass outside three days ago. Now he won't eat at all, or very little, just a bit of water.
There have been viruses going around decimating the kitten population but at 5 months he should be immune by now. This is the 2nd day he has been in the house, curled up in a ball on the sofa, getting extra care and attention. But still he won't snap out of it. He doesn't seem to have a fever and is not running to the toilet but changes his position or place of rest occasionally.
I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with traumatized cats. The snubbing and attack by the other cat may not be the reason for his funk. I'm reading up online about cat psychology...

KP is a mistress of blackmail. She jumps on he kitchen cabinet threatening to break something if I don't pull out something to eat from the fridge. I was reading now, however, some cats do recognize and dote on the heightened attention they get when being sick. One feline I just read about, even pretended to limp when his injured foot was OK just to get that extra stroking from those silly humans.
We just got back from the vet. Puss did have a fever, a rather high one. He was screaming and clawing while getting antibiotic and fluid replacement shots. Now he is back to his quiet self, somewhat in shock. He has to go back to the clinic because his eye really didn't heal well from the operation two months ago. Probably it has been source of the current trouble. A waiting room at a veterinarian clinic is always interesting for the people and animals one meets.

We had to move where we keep eggs as our cat rolls them individually off the table and on to the floor creating an appalling mess. I once heard him slurping from my glass of beer. He's incredibly greedy - but we love him too!

Sometimes I buy them from the farm run by the kids (children not young goats) at the school where I work. We've been told that the eggs should not be stored in the fridge. Now we have a ceramic hen that we store them in.

You're probably right. The eggs are sold at £1.00 for six which is amazingly good value. The cat has not yet worked out how to remove the lid of the ceramic hen to get at the eggs or manoeuvre it onto the floor so that it smashes to smithereens. I have a chaise (covered with a nubby-kind of fabric which is particularly cat-attractive) which has seen much better days; that's
withhaving one large cat tree which has a rope-wrapped main column good for scratching and stretching. The sofa has been climbed on/laid on over the years but is covered in a kind of cotton velvet(??) [no real pile] and hardly shows any claw marks.
Have you ever tried to get your cats used to you trimming their claws? I've found (with the fussiest of the ones) that if you get them when they're sleepy/relaxed and at worst, do it a few claws at a time that you can do it at home. I did also see a clever (and cute) video of two techs getting a kitten used to (and enjoying--or at least not noticing) having his claws trimmed. One was holding the kitten on her lap and trimming the claws; the other was feeding the kitten little bits of canned tuna! ;D

Ah, yes, that can be quite the challenge. I found that using an old wooden yardstick worked quite well. Getting kitty toys out from under the stove was also a pain. It meant lifting out a drawer at the bottom of the stove (a nice deep one which holds roasting pans, etc.) which was quite heavy, finding said toy, and then lifting heavy drawer and putting it back into place. ::)

p.s. Someone told me about a site called "Tiny Kittens". It's a rescue shelter in Canada that has helped a ton of feral cats--particularly pregnant ones. The stories there are amazing and very moving. She's actually as evil as she looks. Adopted from a shelter five years ago. She is a bully, terrorizes a sweet tempered, smaller cat we (wife and I). took in from an elderly gentleman about to move in with his kids a couple years ago. I've watched her stalk the smaller cat, who now refuses to come downstairs. She actually tries to sneak past us to get upstairs. She also displays her incorrigibility by refusing to use litter box right in front of us. She was adopted with our third cat who is twice her size and has learned to ignore her. My wife is open in her dislike of Mudball; but while Mudball definitely isn't our favorite cat, she is still part of the family and almost desperate in begging our affection-- always jumping in our laps even if it means pushing her "sister" cat off. Really, though, what are we supposed to do? As I said: part of the family.
Have you tried things like trying to get them to play together? Like using a wand toy and playing with them for some time? I haven't been in the same situation as you, but have sometimes watched some of those older Jackson Galaxy shows ("My Cat from Hell"). He deals with various problem cats and different situations (including some who attack one of the owners!). You might pick up some ideas? I feel for the smaller cat. :( And/or talk to your vet for suggestions?

Ouch! Do you have any sort of "official" scratching devices? Like a cat tree with some roping wrapped around the main column for scratching or any sort of cardboard scratching posts? Those help a lot. As I'm sure that you know, scratching is a natural part of a cat's life.

While it's certainly an admirable act to adopt any animal from a rescue shelter, l must say l would never accept such a dog or cat ( possibly a bird at the most ) for a pet. The unfortunate fact is that they can be dangerous, as a family member discovered some years ago.
If l owned Mudball and discovered her behaving as described, I'd start looking for someone without another cat ( or any other potential target ) to take her. Just my opinion.
