Quote from: steve ridgway on January 16, 2024, 05:21:10 AMYes, the TV drama has really stirred things up. There's a government inquiry in progress at the moment which I'm following on BBC News. I'm now feeling very relieved that the IT systems I worked on didn't have such appalling consequences.

For non UK residents this may seem small beer but is anything but. The fallout from this TV series is seismic to the fabric of British society. Like everyone else I'm gobsmacked at the lying and complete disregard of fairness by people in power.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

I watched the first episode of Forst on Netflix. Dark and eerie, just the way I like it! It's a Polish production and surprise, surprise, Detective Forst has a ton of baggage!

I also started watching Barry last night. Quite an interesting premise: A hit man gets involved in the world of acting. It's darkly humorous so far.

I'm rerere-ing I, Claudius, and it's as much fun to watch as ever.

Quality never gets old, even if it is ( in media terms ) old.  ;)

Well, we've been 'vegging out' on the prequels to Yellowstone shown below and enjoying them more than the original series - Dave :)

Re-watching one of our favorite series:  Hell on Wheels tells a fictionalized version of the building of the Transcontinental Railroad after The Civil War.

A good number of the characters show emotional damage from experiences in that war, or from being enslaved, or kidnapped in China for labor on the railroad.  Some are psychotic from experiences before the war.  Yet other characters are as normal as they can be, given the circumstances of danger and hardships.

Excellent, thoughtful drama, with occasional comic relief, with complex characters, who will enthrall and disappoint you.
"Meet Miss Ruth Sherwood, from Columbus, Ohio, the Middle of the Universe!"

- Brian Aherne introducing Rosalind Russell in  My Sister Eileen (1942)

Florestan

The Coroner
Death in Paradise
The Mallorca Files
Father Brown
Sister Boniface's Mysteries

All on BBC First, a TV channel I stumbled upon very recently.

Quote from: Brian on January 15, 2024, 07:27:55 PMOh goodness, thank you about the PTSD angle - I think I only remembered reading the books where he is merrily solving crimes and romancing his lady assistant. Hadn't gotten to those two.

That just reminded me of a show I used to watch called Grantchester (Sidney Chambers was bothered by his past in the war)... anyway there was this funny scene where he said that he liked to celebrate his birthday by drinking and listening to music to which came the immediate reply "but you do that every day!" ;D  ;D  ;D

Quote from: Bachtoven on January 15, 2024, 07:52:35 AMI was hugely disappointed! For me, Tosh isn't a strong enough character/actress to carry the show. I also thought there was too much padding: the show could have been condensed to 4 or 6 episodes.

Agreed.  The writing was a let down.  I liked the performances of the two leads but... there were too many red herrings.  One episode was completely given over to stealing a body that was clearly padding and had nothing to do with the rest of the mystery.  The show frequently had red herrings but this season takes the cake with mafia, drug dealers, pagan cults, blackmail, incest, etc etc and the resolution was EXACTLY THE SAME AS A PREVIOUS SEASON!!

Thumbs down, it is the worst season.  It is just not how you write a coherent mystery.  I think I'll just stick with the novels moving forward.

Indeed. I simply don't understand how supposedly quasi-normal people can watch people marched off to prison/take their own lives, knowing that the software responsible for doing so is faulty, and choose to cover it up.
I've not yet watched the series, but a friend was expounding fervently on it recently.

Similar questions were asked about the seemingly average, seemingly normal people carrying out the murderous orders of the last century's mass-extermination dictators.

Apparently some people will do anything to avoid their own personal ruin, imprisonment, or death.

Anyway...besides the series which I recommended earlier...

...let me recommend...Burn Notice.

Spy adventure with a good dose of comic relief!  It was one of the highest-rated cable shows - if not #1 - for all of its run.

I have not seen it, but perhaps I should. Jeffrey Donovan was superb in Fargo (the TV show.)

That was lots of fun. Watched most of it last year.

I read a bit about it; I think that there was a recent BBC article.  Quite shocking!  :(

That and Barry both sound interesting.  I'll have to see how I can watch them.

Was 1923 the first one to come out (after Yellowstone) or the other way around?

PD

p.s.  Has Yellowstone itself resumed?

I heard that it was cancelled because Kevin Costner has some films in the pipeline.

Where did you hear that?  I had read that there were issues, but it sounded like there would be an end to the series (albeit maybe on the short side).

An article I read a few months ago.  I don't even know why I read it since I only watched one episode of the show!
