Doctor Who, Series 11 & 12 (2018-2020)

Coming off of series 1-10 of the rebooted Doctor Who, what a tonal change!

Most notable, the picture quality is more filmic. But also, it seems the world is a serious sci-fi drama with an eccentric dropped in the middle of it. This is different from the candy-pop Doctor Who world where everyone is in on the joke. This aspect lightens up for Series 12.

There is also the fact this is now an ensemble piece rather than Doctor Who as the central figure. Three others regularly accompany her on travels, and each have their own motivations and issues. I appreciate the effort to try and shake up the status quo in a very long-running show.

That sounds refreshing because even while I've been enjoying my rewatch of the Who reboot, it does get tiring how the doctor's companions swoon over him and how he is always like "I'm the most brilliant guy in the room!"

I haven't gotten to S13 yet, but it appears to be heading back in its old direction. I suppose it is inevitable considering DW's role in the universe.

Vicky McClure has been great the whole way through, but she is amazing is this series. Should have all her scenes in '88 taught in acting classes.

Finished Kevin Hershberger's mini-series, The Civil War. Informative and enjoyable. More about Reconstruction than I recall from the superb Ken Burns film. Quite depressing, the ingenuity shown by Southern States in repressing the Blacks in spite of Emancipation. Sets the stage for the sustained bigotry of our day.

    It's about a girl growing up in Kenya on a farm with the story beginning in 1914, and it's based on the life of the author.

I've now finished season 2 of the Dr Who reboot.  A good satisfying closure for Rose Tyler.  It was a memorable end that I remembered clearly from when I first watched it.

Finished Kevin Harberger's mini-series, The Civil War. Informative and enjoyable. More on the Restoration than I remember there being in the superb Ken Burns film. Genuinely depressing to learn of the ingenuity the Southerners showed in their efforts to undermine the freedom of African Americans. It certainly sets the stage for understanding 21^st century American bigotry.

Doctor Who: Series 13 (2021)

About to finally be caught up (this season is short). Of all the rebooted New Who series, this one reminded me most of Old Who.

Season 2 now on the iPlayer, absolutely reeking of menace and class. Two episodes in, superb hardly covers it.

Finished S3 of new Who!  I hated that Daleks two parter.  But the rest of the season is fire with that amazing episode Blink (one of the best of the series) starring a very young Carey Mulligan.  And of course the three parter with the Master!

Finished my second pass of Ken Burns' Civil War. I've now started season four of Twilight Zone. Charles Beaumont's "In His Image" is a brilliant start to this poor stepchild of a season.
