My favorite Dylan performance, ably assisted by John Lennon:

This could be a very strange album. :o  Sounds like his songs are on the secular side--perhaps Frosty and Rudolph will make an appearance.

Hm. Where did you get that cover?

I Googled it. It was on some Peruvian website. Here's a cuter one:

I hope he doesn't sing the climax of "O Holy Night":  "Oh n-i-i-i-ght div-i-i-i-ne". But now nothing will surprise me.  :)

Jewish by birth alone.

How could it be by birth alone?  His grandparents and parents were all jewish, and he was raised in a jewish neighborhood.

I don't think he was much into it.

Many Jews aren't much into it.  I was never into it, but there is a cultural element involved.

I seem to recall that he became more interested in his Jewish heritage a few years after his conversion to Christianity - there was a photo of him sometime in the 80s touching the ground somewhere near or in Jerusalem, which seemed to have some significance for him then. It's not really clear what happened thereafter; the specifically evangelical Christian factor seemed to fade, but since then there's always been a certain kind of Old Testament prophet feeling about him at times (think of some of the imagery from the John Wesley Harding album of 1967, and later songs like the haunting 'Ring Them Bells' from the 90s).

I think he absorbs all these culturally influenced conceptions of himself - the cool dude, the song and dance man, the Jew, the Christian, the OT prophet, the old-fashioned troubadour, the razzled old bluesman, and so on - and different aspects of them continually emerge and fade and emerge again. There's something so surprising about his decision to make a Christmas album, that it actually becomes not surprising, once you get used to it. In a way it's consistent with the 'old crooner' direction that some of the songs on Love and Theft took.

Yes. However, I haven't listened to it yet. The profits go to feed the hungry.
