Before, weren't they? I found a cheap copy of that Hub-Tones disc on ebay so I'll be checking it out soon.

Miles Davis: Dark Magus: Live at Carnegie Hall

It strikes me as somewhat funny that these lengthy freeform funk-rock jams were recorded at Carnegie Hall of all places. I imagine there would have been some perplexed faces in the audience.

Both the compositions are in the 60s before the fusion music, but the performances in the videos are after his fusion period.

Oh, nice! I shall check them out.

Duke Ellington & John Coltrane

This is an awesome record. Nothing particularly groundbreaking, just two jazz giants playing together and feeding off of each other's energy.

Quote from: KevinP on January 13, 2023, 02:06:35 PMI have an odd relationship with Hubbard because when I was first getting into jazz in the early 80s, I bought two horrible albums by him, after which I gave up.

I'm not sure I would find them so terrible now, but I was a teenager and poo-pooed any kind of crossover as selling-out, not a stance I would default to now. I see one of them has a high rating on allmusic, both from the editors and users so I might check it out again. (Still, the idea of Hubbard doing 'Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey...')

I had heard him on the radio prior to those purchases, and I've certainly bought some good titles since, but he was largely absent from my early explorations.

Incidentally, I have the exact same situation with Stanley Turrentine.

His music was better in the 60s, but I think that his skills were at peak in the 70s and early 80s. Anyway, great and intelligent trumpeter.

If you acquire the new "First Flight to Tokyo" album from the Jazz Messengers, there are several long essays and an interview with Wayne Shorter documenting all the musicians' experiences in Japan.

Soul-jazz with so much soul I had to consider which thread to post these in.

Immortal desert island item...I like bebop and am a major fan of both great principals.

A couple of my favorite 3 Sounds albums, the second has a performance of Summertime that I think can be ranked alongside many of the more famous and admired recordings:

I have no Three Sounds in my library, but I've become enamored of Monk Higgins lately, and he did the arrangements of their orchestral work which I've been exploring on YouTube.

I don't own any Three Sounds recordings, either.
But I do have a couple of Gene Harris releases (1 trio, 1 solo), and am impressed by his playing.
I own a lot of the Live at Maybeck solo piano discs, and the Gene Harris is (surprisingly) one of my top two, along with Stanley Cowell.

This is the only Three Sounds I have. It was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray and has 6 bonus tracks. Great sound and playing.

Sick and dangerous! Incredible. He played music at a wedding of an owner of Jazz cafe I know in Japan. The cafe owner showed me some pics.
