Title: Top 5 Hindemith Works
Post by: kyjo on December 29, 2017, 09:59:25 AM
Hindemith is a composer whose music I don't know a ton of, but what I do know is generally of very high quality. I definitely intend to explore more of his output in the near future. There are still some major Hindemith works I don't know, but here's my list for now:

Symphony: Mathis der Maler
Symphonic Metamorphoses of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber
String Quartet no. 1
String Quartet no. 3
Viola Sonata in F, op. 11/4

Many of his works I still don't know, such as Cardillac and the instrumental concertos. But these I love:

Trauermusik
Five Pieces for String Orchestra, Op. 44
Symphony: Mathis der Mahler
Symphony in E-flat
Symphonic Metamorphoses of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber

I haven’t thought about or listened to Hindemith in quite some time, but here’s a few favorites:

Konzertmusik for brass and string orchestra Op. 50
Symphony: Mathis der Maler
Der Schwanendreher
Sonata for Trumpet and Piano
A Requiem "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd"

A Requiem "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd"

Ah, I forgot about this one! Great work.

Nice lists everyone!

There doesn't seem to be agreement on the string quartets.  The one I'm most familiar with is Op. 22, which was recorded by the Hollywood String Quartet.  I also have it on an old Crossroads Lp.

I really like Op.22 as well—about as much as Op.32, but it lacks the wonderful passacaglia that closes the latter. Op.22 is iirc the most frequently recorded of the lot and I think the only one of which we have a recording of the Amar-Hindemith Quartet playing, with the composer on viola (but don't quote me on that—they may have done one of the others as well).

Symphony in E-flat
Concert Music for Brass & Strings
Mathis der Maler Symphony
Symphonic Metamorphoses on themes of Weber
Nobilissima Visione

I need to cheat and also include the Violin Concerto. A couple of posters have mentioned the Requiem; I keep trying it but it never works for me.

As a wind player I have to mention two works: the Bassoon and Clarinet Sonatas.  My former bassoon instructor, Truman Harris, who just retired from the National Symphony, considered the Bassoon Sonata one of the greatest works for the bassoon.

And as a band junkie I have to plug the Symphony in Bb for band.  I have performed this work and it is awesome.

The Symphony is cracking!

And the Clarinet Sonata is one of a few select non-Henning pieces I keep in my rep.

Time to take another shot at this since I’ve dug much deeper into Hindemith’s oeuvre over the past few years:

(In on particular order)

String Quartet No. 7 in E-flat
Der Dämon, Op. 28
Die junge Magd, Op. 23b
Violin Concerto
When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d

A needed update:

Der Schwanendreher
String Quartet No. 3 (or 4)
Organ Concerto
Viola Sonata, Op. 25 No. 4 (a breathtaking piece)
Symphony in E flat

Runner-ups: Sonata for solo cello, Violin Concerto, Cello Concerto (the latest one), Symphonische Metamorphosen, Mathis der Maler Symphony (I've intended to take a try from the operas, btw), Kammermusik (I can't decide which one. All of that series is magnificent).

Ludis Tonalis
Sonata for viola and piano, Op. 11, No. 4
Octet for clarinet, bassoon, horn, violin, two violas, cello, and double bass
String Quartet No. 4, Op. 22
Quintet for clarinet and string quartet, Op. 30

Viola Sonata Op.11 no.4
Lustige Sinfonietta Op.4
5th String Quartet Op.32
Kammermusik no.4 for violin and ensemble, Op.36 no.3
Der Schwanendreher Klaviermusik Op.37
Earlier list still holds with one adjustment. I will also mention the 3 Pieces for Cello and Piano, Op. 8, especially the Scherzo, and the 4th String Quartet (op. 22) and the 6th String Quartet (1943) are additional runners-up. I do have a persistent soft spot for the Harmonie der Welt Symphonie as well, and the Kleine Kammermusik for wind quintet.
