I know Mosolov for his short orchestral work The Iron Foundry. I wasn't aware he had composed symphonies. How are they ?
Five IMHO.But Symphony in E (excellent work) hasn't number

Thanks, Roy. This one looks hard to find, but I suppose someday it will become available at the right price (900$+ on Amazon  ???).

Amazon is sometime totally madness

Rossini Overtures arranged for mandolin quintet has to be one of the most niche things ever.
I am now working on a discography of the works of Vagn Holmboe. Please visit and also contribute!

Some DECEMBER news

Not just premiere recordings of the Mosolov works, but the first ever performance of the harp concerto.

These look very interesting.
Part of the tragedy of the Palestinians is that they have essentially no international support for a good reason: they've no wealth, they've no power, so they've no rights.

Interesting that the Novak disc is listed as "Vol. 1", given that in 2017 Naxos released a recording of In the Tatra Mountains, Lady Godiva and Eternal Longing. I wonder if that disc is going to be retroactively incorporated into this new cycle.

The three discs noted by Symphonic Addict above are the three that grabbed my attention more than the others as well.

Hmm? Would this happen to be a reissue from his private label? I didn't think Rübsam was recording for Brilliant.

It says recorded March 2020 and the copyright is Brilliant. Guess it's a new endeavor. However, his private label is credited as the producer.

To be clearer and even odder: "a pair of mandolins, a mandola, guitar and double bass"
Four transcriptions from about a century ago, four transcriptions newly commissioned - the idea of new commissions for this ensemble is REALLY niche!

I don't know if this list is correct - but it gives, I suppose, a good indication of Mosolovs oeuvre:

You're costing me a lot of money Cesar!!!
I shall be getting all those releases. The South Bohemian Suite is probably my favourite orchestral work by Novak, along with De Profundis.
I've enjoyed Brusa's music, especially 'Merlin' and have exchanged some nice communications with her (although Harry has met her!  >:D). Furthermore, it has one of my favourite paintings on the front cover 'Hope' by one of my favourite artists G.F. Watts. The Mosolov is also a must have.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

The Brusa is also om my list, of course it is! :)

The same G.F. Watts who Charles Villiers Stanford dedicated his 6th Symphony to?

Yes, that's right.

There's an excellent Watts Gallery in Compton near Godalming in Surrey. 'Hope' is in the Tate Gallery I think:

It's not my fault, Jeffrey, but Brian's.  ;D :)

I've heard some works by Brusa and I've found her a quite compelling composer. That will be a promising release.

It doesn't make sense that he should record the French suites twice within less than a half year, so I think they are the same recordings.
Any so-called free choice is only a choice between the available options.

Yes Cesar - I realised it after I posted my message. However, you did 'add fuel to the fire' by reposting those irresistible Naxos December releases  8)

I like Brusa's music and I had a nice email exchange with her. You could try 'Merlin' which I especially like.

I like her music as well.  I have an early Naxos disc of hers that is quite fine, just don't remember the name of the work to explore, but basically, I've enjoyed all I've heard from her.  Colorful and accessible music.

Me too. She's an interesting composer and I've enjoyed all of those Naxos CDs of her music, but especially 'Merlin' with its mystical and magical qualities:
