General Classical Music Discussion / Re: Monthly Focus
Last post by Big David - Today at 04:51:44 AM
In March and April my focus is on British music.  So far I have listened to the Mass of Life by Delius; the cello concertos by Paul Patterson, Anna Clyne, Colin and David Matthews, Walton and Errolyn Wallen; various orchestral pieces by Herbert Howells; and symphonies 1 and 2 by Tippett; 3 and 4 by Vaughan Williams; and no. 1 by Robert Simpson.

I was at the Barbican last night for the Vaughan Williams 5th symphony, played by the LSO with Pappano conducting.  Very good, I thought.

Over the rest of April I will be listening to VW's late symphonies.

Kurt Atterberg (1887 – 1974)
Orchestral Works, Volume 3.
See back cover for details.
Recording venue Concert Hall, Gothenburg, Sweden;  2014 (Symphony No. 5) and 2015 (Symphony No. 1)

This music makes my heart leap, always did. Järvi makes a excellent case for this composer, and Chandos is providing SOTA sound. And by the way, I have the CPO recordings too, and also hold them in great esteem

Pascal Rophé conducts the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI in Luigi Dallapiccola's Three Questions with Two Answers.

I've always been a great admirer of Dallapiccola's music, but today this is sounding particularly seductive. Suoerb!  :)

Great Recordings and Reviews / Re: New Releases
Last post by Todd - Today at 04:33:53 AM

I would have thought St Patrick's Day would be the time to release this, but then I don't work in marketing.

Before the image was available, I only saw the 'Canticle of the Sun' title and got my hopes up for a new recording of Gubaidulina's masterpiece.  This ain't that.

Pity about the instrument.

Vinyl reissue.
