While not her best album (Rapture), still enjoyable.

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

No idea why its taken me so long to get to this set, considering how much I love the rest of Columbia's Roots and Blues series.

But its absolutely superb, and the transfers unbelievably clear.

Fell in love with this all over again.

Quote from: k a rl h e nn i ng on December 05, 2022, 09:26:55 AMMy immediate takeaway was how irrelevant Phil Spector was to so many of the numbers ....

I don't know if PS worked on Across the Universe, but it could have been better. Such a nice song with pretty lyrics.

It seems to me, the arrangements of Let It Be and Winding Road are average, if not poor. The chorus for the latter is a little too sexy.

Yeah that was a great one.

The Blind Willie Johnson and Mississippi John Hurt releases in that series are still desert island discs for me.

Their gospel and cajun releases were also amazing, especially these two collections I had in heavy rotation for a long time:

Hearing Mahalia Jackson sing "Move On Up A Little Higher" on that first one knocked me sideways (as did the thunderous Abyssinian Baptist Choir's "Said I Wasn't Going To Tell Nobody")

Yes, the Blind Willie Johnson and Mississippi John Hurt recordings are excellent. I lived in the Cajun region (Lafayette, Louisiana) in the 1990s, and the Cajun Dance disc was a big deal to me and my friends. Some other discs I liked (many year ago) and I am planning to revisit:

That's making me nostalgic for some discs I havent heard in a couple of decades now.

Would also like to reaquire copies of the Memphis Minnie and Tampa Red releases in that series.

j winter

Been having a fine time listening to Ray Charles the last few days (though my slim-box version of the set doesn't have the cool phonograph, etc....

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

-- William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice
