When the album is ready and available, you should write to Earrelevant and ask them to review it.
Looked it up... looks like only classical reviews?

My other two albums of all of my older stuff is classical, but this album is mostly, not sure... but instrumental prog rock/metal, I guess? (with 3 tracks that are sorta classical)

They're gradually expanding the "post-classical" element.  So, I'd say, write with a request, describing the album, and see what Mark says.

Quote from: greg on February 21, 2020, 08:13:35 AMJust wanted to say this album is top notch, 10 out of 10 imo.

I suppose the notion of humility went out the window with this comment. ::)

Either honesty or humility. Can't have both in this situation.

Well, it's one thing to be happy with your work, but it's another to boast about it with a 10/10 rating from yourself. I've recorded many things I'm happy with, but I'd never claim it to be good or give it a personal rating. I'll leave that to the listeners. I'm not really in any position to judge my own work.

Sure you are. You are, after all, one of your listeners. And you have to please yourself, first, no?

I read it as his feeling that it is the best work he's done to date.

Yeah, this is my way of thinking.

Seems being extremely critical and tweaking every detail until it sounds "just right" is the way increase how stuff sounds from like a 6 or 7 to a 9 or 10... also just listening to feelings like "that's awkward when it just stopped there, feels like it should go on a bit for another 30 seconds," etc. and acting on the corrections always seems to help a lot.

My music is mainly just for me. Sharing it is a secondary thing, because it is the right thing to do in case some people also really enjoy it.

Ah, but that's the catch. I'm never truly satisfied with my own music and the way it comes out. There was one piece I recorded (which no one has heard at this moment) that I was proud of and I seriously doubt I'd be able to do again in the way it was captured at that moment, but I'd never give it a rating or say it's 'top-notch'. That really isn't for me to say. There's nothing wrong with being proud of your work, but I suppose there's a part of me that doesn't like being told something is good unless I hear it for myself or if I specifically ask whether it was good or not. Anyway, perhaps I just read what Greg said wrongly or simply took it in the wrong way. But I have several friends that are also musicians and none of them has said something like Greg has said. If a musician friend wants me to hear something, they usually just say "I hope you enjoy it". They don't give me an opinion along with it. If anything, they're glad I listened in the first place.

My evaluation is more something I'm saying to myself, but out loud, if that makes any sense.

If you're never really satisfied with what you write then you should mercilessly criticize it because then you can figure out what to change. That method has helped me a lot.

My point is what you wrote, IMHO, came off sounding self-congratulatory and egotistical. And yes, there's no harsher critic than oneself, but that notion seemed to slip through the cracks with your initial comment. :-\ Anyway, looking forward to hearing the album even if it isn't my cup of tea.

Must be just a matter of perspective. When i hear of composers/musicians say the same thing about their own stuff i don't think anything of it.

Glad to hear you are looking forward to it.

It has some variety in it, but most likely will scare off half of my audience on the first track. It's called "Pyramid Head," so enough said if you know the character lol. :P

I won't litter up your thread any longer other than to say that it's good to know you're proud of your work. Acknowledgement of the work and just hearing it as a listener can be a satisfying experience, especially if you throw your critic's cap out the window, which I have been trying to do for quite some time. ;)

greg

So since I might not ever write any classical music again (and if I do, it would just be something more like additional tracks in future albums for my non-classical music), I'd like to conclude this old thread with the links to my complete classical works.
