The main drawback of this otherwise great recording is the participation of counter tenor Dominique Visse, who stains this record with his horrible voice.

Yes, very often the counters are to blame for rejecting a recording, Visse is a case in point.....horrible!

Music from the Time of Guido Renis.

Works by: Frescobaldi, Palestrina, Marini, Selma, Castello, Rossi, Montalbano, Pesenti, etc.
See back cover for details.

A very pleasant and interesting recording, with plenty of composers that are not always well represented in the musical catalogue. And on top of that we get really good performances and sound. That is not always guaranteed with this label. But this is good!

Quote from: Leo K. on Today at 08:58:48 AMI didn't use to like Bernstein's 3rd Symphony "Kaddish" but I respected it, but now today, after again hearing his earlier recording with his wife as the speaker, just totally blew me away, and now I love love love it. It's like the clouds opened and I get it, the speaker is essential and almost a percussive element if done with intent. Because of much that I am hearing in the media lately, the text felt so relevant as ever. The music was crushing and beautiful.

I must admit my "arc" with this piece is the reverse - I really used to love it but now less so.  However, I do think the 1st Bernstein version with Felicia Montealegre and Jennie Tourel is easily the best recording because both those performers are so completely committed to the work. That said a couple of the lines of the spoken text do rather make me cringe.  But somehow that is the deal with Bernstein.

Quote from: Karl Henning on Today at 07:26:45 PMI cannot forestall disappointment in the Council of Elrond devolving into rather a barroom brawl. There is a great deal of dignity in the books which the screenplays scuttle utterly. Just calling balls and strikes, here.

I actually started re-reading Lotr a little while ago and I agree with this post of yours wholeheartedly. While your overall feelings may be more positive I have never liked Lotr movies by Jackson, especially scenes with Frodo, Sam and Gollum. Also taking The Eye of Sauron literally annoys me and shows marked superficial reading of The book.

Mine is actually this CD compilation but I like to use the original artwork on my files.

Arvo Pärt: Tabula Rasa

Thought I'd better give it a try as I'd never heard any of his works. I'm not so keen on minimalism but found it OK, Schnittke on the prepared piano maintained my interest.

Quote from: steve ridgway on Today at 09:35:38 PMI was just reading on Wikipedia that Kremer invited Schnittke to play with the orchestra on its 1977 tour to Austria and Germany so he'd get permission to travel and hear the premiere in the West of the Concerto Grosso No. 1 that Kremer and Grindenko had asked him to compose the previous year.

As a different performance of that was what I was just listening to.

I had this LP many, many years ago. Don't remember my impression.
