It's neither pride, luck or expectations. It's a simple question of taste. Everyone differs. Sorry for being so limited.

I really want to read some Eliot as well, especially Middlemarch... but I've read so many lengthy books this year already I might save it for next. Edit: Maybe I'll try Silas Marner.

Have you read Anthony Powell's A Dance to the Music of Time? I just suddenly thought you may like it.  Short in a way, 12 short novels, funny, intelligent and arguably "great." I had a friend at university who wrote a doctorate about it, and argued it was a really major contribution to literature.

Quote from: Pohjolas Daughter on May 01, 2024, 06:45:22 PMHow is she doing?  And I'm so sorry.

I posted about it at the time, but she never got better, and rapidly declined and I had to have her euthanized on Mar. 20, 2022, the day before Mardi Gras. I had to have her predecessor, Precious euthanized on the day after Mardi Gras in 2011.

After about three months of carelessness, I got two eight-week-old kittens from a co-worker whose cat had a litter. I'm not a big picture-taker, so it looks like the latest one I have is from Sep. 2023, not long after I had them fixed. You can see where Lulu's stomach was shaved for the operation. Her brother Alban's in the foreground.

More recent non-classical music purchases on CD, all used and cheap:

Chyp-Notic: When I Dream (single, 1993)
Chyp-Notic ft. Greg Ellis: Don't Break The Heart (single, 1994)
Dido: Here With Me (single, 2001)
The Time Frequency: Real Love (single, 1992)
VA: RTL Sommer Hits 2011 (2CD compilation, 2011)
Was (Not Was): Are You Okay? (album, 1990)

I have always liked Was (Not Was)'s songs Papa Was A Rolling Stone and I Feel Better Than James Brown. This album felt interesting, but to my disappointment the other songs aren't even near as good. I love pop music of around 2011 and that's why I bought the German RTL compilation. It contains some songs I want in my music collection. The Time Frequency is nice Scottish rave music...

Quote from: Ian on May 01, 2024, 09:07:17 AMI've not heard a new TD release since the early 80s. My favourite is still Rubycon and I recently bought the remastered version, my previous being the original release on CD. It's well worth it IMHO.

Personally I don't understand why people are not interested of "later" TD, but then again how could I understand other people? When I got into TD back in 2008, I was warned by TD fans online how the TD albums of the 90s suck for all the flamenco guitars and saxophone. When I explored them I found those albums at least okay and extending the stylistic range of the band. I like how TD has done so many styles. No matter what mood I am in, there is likely something by them that fits it.

For me not liking later TD would be a limitation rather than something to be proud of. I guess I am very lucky to be able to enjoy all of their music. I just don't expect musicians to make their early albums over and over again. Music technology has advanced so much while TD has been creating music. It would be a miracle if it didn't show in the style and sound.

Quote from: Tsaraslondon on May 01, 2024, 09:39:04 AMSo who are these awful performers. I think we need to know.

That's what I was wondering. I found this page on the label's website. I few familiar names, and a bunch of others.

Quote from: JBS on May 01, 2024, 08:06:01 PMI liked Daniel Deronda more than Middlemarch.

I got bored by all the Zionism stuff, and so abandoned it. But it started well, maybe I should go back to it and try again.

After the very long winter we are finally having warmer weather this week. +12°C (54°F) in Helsinki.

Quote from: 71 dB on April 20, 2024, 07:22:16 AMFinnish bedrock is among the most stable in the World and I have personally never experienced an earthquake in my life. Some areas of Finland experience small tremors sometimes, but they are very weak and harmless. 3.0 on Richter scale is massive in Finland!

In Kuusamo, one of the most seismically active areas in Finland (700 km from Helsinki) has been an earthquake of magnitude 2.0. Yes, earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 on Richter scale are news in Finland. :D
