Quote from: Florestan on April 23, 2024, 05:50:38 AMExcept for the last movement of the Pathetique, I can't find any instance of suicidal depression in Tchaikovsky's music. Emotional turbulence aplenty, melancholy (mostly of the dark type) in spades --- but suicidal depression is an exaggeration. Did you ever feel like killing yourself after listening to Tchaikovsky?  :D

The Piano Trio in A Minor, Op. 50, ends  with very much the same sense of defeat as does Pathetique. Tchaikovsky evokes Chopin's " Funeral March " in the piano's rhythm, and it's easy to interpret the alternating A and E in the left hand as the final steps to an open grave, or perhaps the gallows...

Well, glad that I stuck around for the Tippett.  I've had a mixed relationship with his music from the start, so haven't gone back to listen again (or explored much further).  Quite an interesting symphony (with interesting effects such as the sound of breathing both at the beginning and end of it).  Would be nice for the BBC to release a CD of the concert.  :)

Just bought tickets for Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Teatro Real here in Madrid on May 18 (the production premiered last night). Pablo Heras-Casado conducts, the stage director is Laurent Pelly, and Gerald Finley sings Hans Sachs.

Meistersinger has been absent from Madrid since 2001, when Daniel Barenboim brought the Deutschmark Staatsoper production (by Harry Kupfer) to the Teatro Real. The last time I saw the work was in Bayreuth in 2018 (the wonderful Barrie Kosky production, conducted by Philippe Jordan).

It's a privilege to see this masterpiece on stage...

Quote from: Que on March 13, 2024, 02:28:49 PMInteresting!  :)  I liked the 1st volume very much, the 2nd volume less so.

I think they may have found their old form in the singing -  there are a fair amount of instrumental tracks though, not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

Quote from: Brian on Today at 11:27:19 AMHere are some YouTube videos of Yeol Eum Son in 2005 (Chopin Etudes Op 25, complete, age 19)

She recorded the complete set around the same time as well: https://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,26952.msg1203495.html#msg1203495

She needs to record everything under the sun.

If I lived in LA, I'd listen to her play Mozart this weekend.

Quote from: 71 dB on Today at 02:44:57 AMI listened to the first symphony on Spotify (Jurowski).

That's not a particularly good rendition. Listen to Karajan.

It really lasted only two seasons; they produced a third season for syndication. The classic observation by Creative Consultant Harlan Ellison was on the lines of: You know you're sunk if you can't beat Webster in the ratings.

I quite enjoyed Vaughan Williams' fourth!  Listening now to some former coworkers talking about him with Andrew McGregor.  May "hang around" for the Tippett.
