Title: Classical composer in one way or the other inspired by Carlo Gesualdo?
Post by: Carlo Gesualdo on September 21, 2021, 08:39:34 PM
During Baroque time or 21 century, did Gesualdo cross outside Italy, any proof he might have inspired other composers?

This is a serious question , I want serious answers?
:)

Sure there is Peter Warlock, Sandro Gorli, Erkki Sven-Tuur, Brett Dean whit ECM fabulous CD. But is there more to it???

No, DP, he didn't inspire anyone else.  I've looked it up and, although numerous composers have been arrested and imprisoned for various crimes (Beethoven: vagrancy, Tippett: pacifism, Cowell: gay sex) no others have committed murders.  So he's one on his own.

Or was it music we were talking about?  No, I can't see that his psychopathic chromaticism had much influence on anyone, either.  Stravinsky, of course, orchestrated 3 of the madrigals (Monumentum pro Gesualdo di Venosa ad CD annum) in 1960, apparently under the impression that Gesualdo was born 6 years before he actually was.  Whether that counts as influence, I wouldn't like to say.

There's a Gesualdo opera by Schnittke too, and one by Bo Holten.
