PD

It's 9 years old, running Monterey. It has one more year of support left (before Monterey support ends and it stops getting security and misc updates). The issue with the AirPods Max is that for full functionality you have to have an iPhone or a Mac with apple silicon, and I suspect that has something to do with the occasional quirks involving Apple Streaming to the AirPods.

It is rather annoying that the support is ending after ~10 years while the hardware is still working beautifully. I could continue to use it, but am reluctant to do anything important on a computer that is not getting security updates.

Composer Discussion / Re: Leonard Bernstein 1918-199...

Quote from: DavidW on November 15, 2023, 08:39:14 AMI had been watching Leonard Bernstein videos recently.  One of my favs is Bernstein upbraiding a student conductor for not admitting his own mistake.  Another of my favs is his telling of his experience learning under Reiner:

Thanks. YT posters have taken bits and pieces from the entire Kennedy Center Honors Interview to highlight points about Bernstein's career/viewpoint. But I wanted to watch it in its entirety. Inspiring!

Great Recordings and Reviews / Re: Schubert's String Quartets

Quote from: George on Today at 01:04:54 PMOK, thanks. Can you say what you preferred about the Auryn?

Superior execution overall, with the early quartets sounding more serious or rigorous (though only marginally), and the late masterpieces by the Auryn are more or less comparable to any version.  Plus, I prefer the recorded sound.  The Diogenes are not at all bad, but the Auryn strike me as more accomplished overall.

Quote from: DavidW on Today at 11:00:40 AMI think that I'm right in saying that most of us don't use dedicated streamers?

No I do everything on my iPhone. Either I'm listening on the phone itself (earphones) or I'm sending the signal to my mini hifi system.

The fact that the hifi could handle both streaming and CDs was a key reason I bought it. I was rather surprised such things were so uncommon.

I admit I'm a Hagen fan - this D887 is impeccable and one thing I learned from it is that if you're going to make sense of that first movement with repeats you need to be real masters at dynamic control. Hagen are as usual impeccable - tight incisive rhythms as well as really hushed quiet passages. 20.46 in the first movement.

Quote from: DavidW on Today at 10:55:50 AMIf I vaguely recall, that was the good one and Red Planet was the other one released that year and it was stupid.

Yes, I don't think I'll bother with that one.

De Palma made one film that stands out for me in the drugs/guns/party/disco vein, Carlitos Way, featuring Sean Penn in his best role evah!

Quote from: Spotted Horses on Today at 01:03:51 PMNo gaps. Once in a blue moon the player seems to get stuck and I have to close and re-open Apple Music to get it working again. And there is an odd problem that on a nearly obsolete version of MacOS Apple Music will refuse to stream a track over Bluetooth to AirPods Max. In that case I end up switching over to another non-obsolete Mac.
Ah, the joys of computers aging.  :(
