Last night, my first live jazz in Philadelphia (thanks to the pandemic), from Irreversible Entanglements, at a relatively new (and great) venue called Solar Myth.

Heard this version of the Armstrong number on Arctic Outpost Radio yesterday. Will have to track down a cd or two by this New Orleans close harmony group.

Good listen. Pulse, drive and improvisation feed on each other with enthousiasm. Forceful pieces, always staying within it's own limit, alternate with slower pieces, without a dull moment. The music develops greatly and the arrangements are really wonderful and original.

Alas, no "Nuclear War," but basically three songs, lasting roughly 90 minutes without a break. (I still have to find out the setlist, since I'm not familiar enough with their output to identify.) But yes, outstanding. If I had already made plans, I might have gotten a ticket to the second night, with Marshall Allen (now 99 years old!) playing with the group. But that was sold out, no chance.

In any case, glad to have caught them, and the club is now on my radar. (It just opened last fall.)

PS, the venue is now run by Ars Nova Workshop, which presents jazz here, but they left the neon sign outside from Boot & Saddle, the previous venue. The sign is landmarked by the city, which I hope means it can't go anywhere. ;D

That ticket would have been almost impossible to acquire, surely sold out long in advance. Marshall Allen is really amazing. From what I've heard (Internet anecdotes), the modern Arkestra shows are very enjoyable and definitely worth seeing.

For the birthday of jazz vocal great Janis Siegel (of The Manhattan Transfer), here she is last month at the Dergårdsteatern in Lerum, Sweden, with pianist Mattias Nilsson, in "Lucky to Be Me" from Bernstein's "On the Town." At 1:50, check out her evocation of a muted trumpet, among other delights.

If you like electric Miles from In a Silent Way era to semi-retirement in the mid-70s, this is a very good collection of about 6 hours worth of recordings included on several albums like On the Corner, Big Fun, Get Up with It plus some amount of never-released material. Of similar sets released in recent times, I like this one and The Cellar Door Sessions the best. For those who aren't going to delve into multi-disc editions I can recommend Get Up with It. But, one have to consider that the Get Up with It tracks sound better in this set.

I think it's the only metal spine box of Davis' that wasn't re-released in a long box. I don't have it either.

Best cover art of the series.

(EDIT: My praise of the cover art is not in reference to the art depicted above, which is good but doesn't wow you the way the metal sleeve does.)

The metal sleeve are raised reliefs of the original LP cover art, front and back.

Kicking myself for not buying that. The metal version is the coolest thing ever.
