In response to Coronavirus crisis.
There were problems with last night's Carmen. Apparently it was more popular than they'd anticipated, and lots of people, including me, got messages that it was unavailable. Also complaints from paid subscribers to the Met's On Demand service that they couldn't access what they'd paid for because of all the people using it for free. I did try back an hour or so later and was able to watch it over Roku.
Most of the offerings in this first week are things I'm not really interested in seeing (or seeing again), and I've got the Onegin on DVD. I might try to catch the Trovatore (I saw it live in a movie theatre) and Lucia (I've never seen that production, though I hear I'm not missing much).
Week two will be an all-Wagner week, including the complete Lepage Ring. I'd prefer more variety, but I missed Tristan and Tannhäuser when they originally aired, so I'll probably catch at least those two.

Dialogues last night was even better than I remembered from seeing it "Live in HD".

Watched part of it. Off course the singing was good with Price et al. Old fashioned production with not too much acting typical of the Met at that time. Not one of my favourite Verdi operas. But worth hearing for Price.

Can be a bit hit and miss that but worth a try. The R & J is certainly worth a watch. Saw that at the cinema.
Just listening to Romeo and Juliet again. It really is worth catching as a production and also for the singing. Anna really is fantastic as Juliet. There is a very good review of the production here which I concur with so rather than reinvent the wheel I'll just give the link

I loved that production, and saw it 3-4 times in person. (Full disclosure: It's among my top 5 operas.) The two singers are excellent, the orchestra sounds GREAT, and some of the turns by the director (Mariusz Treliński) were very effective, like the very opening, when they arrive at the castle in a car. Imaginative use of video, too, to evoke the castle's brooding hallways.

Always seems a tired opera to me.
Berg's Lulu tonight in case anyone wants to cheer themselves up by investigating human depravity under the influence of atonatility. I think I'll give it a miss myself! :D

It would certainly be a dull world if we were all the same. I did actually go and see one of the performances of the Puccini at the cinema live. It was quite enjoyable. I did actually go and see Wozzek live too and felt as if I'd been dragged through a sewer of the mind. Since I reckon there are enough things to depress one without Mr Berg adding to them. But hope you enjoy Lulu. I have seen a bit of it but not my cup of tea. Have a great day!

Did you like the previous Met
Lulu production, by John Dexter? I do like the Kentridge, but Dexter's Art Nouveau sets were beautifully in keeping with the time period. PS, quite a choice for a favorite opera! But I can identify, having seen both Met productions a total of maybe 8 or 10 times.

I loved the Dexter production. It and Graham Vick's Glyndebourne production are probably my favorites, and I think I've seen every version that's been released commercially.

Not at all. Just people with different tastes in opera than I have. No harm in that. The world would be a dull place if everyone was the same.
Someone at the Met has a wicked sense of humor. On Thanksgiving Day, the nightly stream is everyone's family favorite, Elektra. ;D

I did see it at the cinema. Can't say I go a bundle on the opera or the production.
