Gonzalo Rubalcaba (1991): Blessing

Not familiar with the music, but he sure looks bored.

Charles Mingus - Changes Two

Basic Mingus, prominent swing, stylistically distinct like baron jazz. Mijgus was a great band leader I think.

I'm reading mixed reviews about that one. How do you like it? Is it necessary?

The sound quality is like an okay bootleg, so I'd imagine that loses a few points in reviews, but if you can look past that the playing is as fine as you'd expect.

I'm not sure I'd say its essential, especially if you've already got enough Coltrane live, but I don't feel short-changed.

T. D.

On the fence.
Certain musicians, e.g. Coltrane and Mingus, have had so many reissues in recent years that only dedicated completists can keep up with them.
In this case, I already have the 4-CD Village Vanguard set.

The album from great Czech bass player Miroslav Vitous on this day.

EDIT:  As an aside, I heard an interview with her on NPR yesterday.  It was of an earlier interview which they did for the radio program "Wait, wait.  Don't tell me."  Her name was familiar to me, but I didn't really know anything about her nor heard any of her recordings, so I thought that I would poke around a bit.  Any suggestions here from you folks would be appreciated.

Huh. I don't think I've seen this before or heard it.

So it has "controversial" posthumous overdubs by Alice? Would you recommend it?

KevinP

Yes, if you're an Alice Coltrane fan or at least open to her.

Billy Harper's on this! The music is kind of fusion. Gil uses some ring modulation, and Kikuchi plays electric piano, if it matters.
