I recently signed up to the Opera-L forum, but have now left it. I just couldn't put up with the bitchiness and back biting any more. I thought it would be a forum for intelligent discussion about opera and singers, but for every well considered and interesting post, there seem to be at least another half dozen posters bitching at each other for not liking this or that singer, this or that production. This forum is a tranquil and peaceful haven in comparison. Thank heavens for that, I say.
Well, sorry to hear about Opera L. Now and then I have been intrigued by what sounds like a huge number of people there, and (apparently) some great recordings circulating amongst them. But what is it about the genre that sometimes seems to bring out the worst in people, i.e., the snide remarks. Sure, we all have our favorite artists, but to demonize others seems mean-spirited. (It's not like they're investment bankers, bilking people out of millions of dollars or something. ;D)
I dunno...I thought listening to opera was supposed to be fun. :-\

I was going to say the same. But generally, this opera forum is the nicest among all I've ever registered on. And it never lacks intelligence and commitment. I'd better communicate with a small group of thoughtful people than with a number of bitching around ones.

Hear, hear!!!
That's nice to read; at least from the POV of GMG. I have always been mildly surprised that we seem to be quite a civilised bunch here on the Opera threads. I had long anticipated the kind of behaviour you mention at Opera-L. It is a shame that some people feel the need to do one another in; because they hear things differently from one another.
I know, (see the Schubert Lieder thread,) that some love Bostridge. I clearly hear him differently from those people. But it does not mean to me that their ears or taste are defective. Callas is a case in point on our Opera threads. People are free not to like her and we don't take it out on them if they don't.
I encourage you to keep posting busily here; our vocal threads seem only to attract the Great White Souls! And they are a bit thin on the ground, well, they would be.
