I have often wondered what I will choose as my eight desert island CDs when, as an international celebrity, I am invited to appear on the radio programme of the same name. So here is your chance to do the same (maximum eight):
1 Moeran Symphony (Boult or Dilkes)
2 Vaughan Williams Symphony No 6 (Boult 1950s Decca recording)
3 Miaskovsky Symphony No 6 (Kondrashin)
4 Braga Santos Symphony No 4 (Marco Polo)
5 Tubin Symphony No 4 (Jarvi)
6 Copland Symphony No 3 (Slatkin)
7 Shostakovich Symphony No 4 (Kondrashin)
8 Bruckner Symphony 9 (Furtwangler)
Box sets? Double/triple disc sets...?
Quote from: Mn Dave on March 30, 2009, 12:25:04 PMBox sets? Double/triple disc sets...?
Indeed. Especially for Wagner fans.
1. Havergal Brian 'Gothic Symphony'(No.1) (Marco Polo/Lenard)
2. Bruckner Symphony No.9 (Warner/Barenboim)
3. Brahms Symphony No.4 (DGG/C.Kleiber)
4. Vaughan Williams 'London Symphony'(No.2) (Chandos/Hickox)
5. Mussorgsky 'Pictures at an Exhibition'(DGG/von Karajan)
6. Rubbra Symphony No.4(Chandos/Hickox)
7. Mahler Symphony No. 2 'Resurrection'(EMI/Rattle)
8. Richard Strauss Four Last Songs(EMI/Schwarzkopf/Szell)
......but- no Sibelius, Nielsen, Holst, Shostakovich....sobs :(
I would burn six of the eight CDs to choose my own programs. ;D This is probably cheating >:D >:D
Post author reserves right to change his choices later!
Especially if it is ruled that his choice to burn CDs rather than choosing pre-existing ones is cheating!
CD1
Barber - Adagio for Strings - Royal Scottish/Alsop
Brahms - Symphony No 4 - VPO/Kleiber
Strauss - Metamorphosen - WDR/Bychkov
CD2
Beethoven - Egmont Overture - Swedish CO/Dausgaard

Janacek - Glagolitic Mass - CzPo/Ancerl
CD4
Dvorak - Cello Concerto - Fournier/BPO/Szell
Dvorak - Symphony No 8 - Staatskapelle Berlin/Suitner
CD5
[This wouldn't be a burned CD. It would be the Naxos release of Heifetz playing Sibelius, Tchaikovsky and Wieniawski Violin Concertos recorded in the 1930s.]
CD6
[This wouldn't be a burned CD either. It would be Bruckner's Seventh played by the Staatskapelle Dresden under Herbert Blomstedt, on Denon.]
CD7
Scriabin - Etude Op 8 No 12 - Yevgeny Sudbin
Chopin - Ballade No 2 - Maurizio Pollini (DG new release) [or maybe someone else]
Chopin - Ballade No 1 - Artur Rubinstein (RCA stereo)
Chopin - Ballade No 4 - Istvan Szekely
Chopin - a smattering of waltzes and mazurkas (probably 3 w's and 2 m's) - Ivan Moravec

Scriabin - a couple mazurkas - Yevgeny Sudbin

CD8 [the "whatever I was forgetting about earlier" CD]
Mendelssohn - Octet - Kodaly/Auer Quartets
Smetana - The Moldau - PNRSO/Wit
Sibelius - Symphony No 5 - I don't know which performers. Haven't found "That Recording" yet.
1. Bach's WTC - Tureck/DG
2. Shostakovich Op. 87 Preludes and Fugues - Nikolayeva/Melodiya
3. Beethoven's Late Piano Sonatas - Pollini/DG
4. Mozart's Great Mass in C minor - Leppard/EMI
5. Handel's Eight Great Keyboard Sonatas - Ross/Erato
6. Bach's Goldberg Variations - Tureck/DG

I guess you figure that you'll have plenty of time to prepare your recordings. If time is limited, you'll end up with next to nothing on your island (and no Sibelius 5th).

Well okay, I'll retry. If the tyrant placing me on the island gives me no time to spare, I will grab these eight actual CDs:
Ivan Moravec Plays Chopin (Vox live recital)
Beethoven - 5 and 7 - Carlos Kleiber, VPO
Beethoven - Last Three Sonatas - Paul Komen, fortepiano
The aforementioned Heifetz album
The Janacek Glagolitic Mass (Ancerl, CzPo)
Dvorak's Cello Concerto (Queyras - it has a better coupling)
"Great Conductors of the Century: Eugene Ormandy" (2 CD set but notice I have only listed 7 so no chance of cheating here...)
If I'm allowed an 8th, it would be the aforementioned Bruckner album.

My parents were big country music fans or country folkish fans, particularly old school country. And very big Emmylou Harris fans. Some of their favorites were Charley Pride, Hank Williams, The Carter Family, The Kendalls, Juice Newton, Willie Nelson, Don Messer, Don Williams...

This is assuming no box sets, naturally. If I can go that route, all bets are off. Of course, I'd much rather just take my iPod ;D
Just a pedantic point: many of you are cheating! You get eight discs...not eight box sets or eight twofers. If you must have a three-disc opera, you only have five remaining discs, not seven. If you want a Bach B minor mass, you only have six discs left, not seven.
If I'd chosen eight sets instead of eight single discs, my choices would look quite different, maybe something like this:
Wagner Der Ring des Nibelugen - Karajan
Bruckner Symphonies 3-9 - Celibidache
Sibelius Symphonies plus Kullervo - Berglund
Mahler Symphonies - Chailly
Beethoven Symphonies - Szell
Schmidt Symphonies - Järvi
Emmylou Harris Portraits (3 discs)
Emmylou Harris Cimarron
Sarge, stepping off the pulpit now ;D

vandermolen(Jeffrey), who started this thread, was basing the concept on the long-running(since 1942) BBC Radio programme of the same name. The rules specify eight "pieces of music". The most popular choice over the years from the celebrity guests-who include the past six British Prime Ministers-has been Beethoven's 9th(specifically, the 'Ode to Joy').

That pretty well describes my interest too. I love country and folk music from the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and later artists like Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris who incorporated that early country style with rock, and in the process, invented country rock (today's Alternative Country). What passes for "country" on today's radio and Billboard charts is a travesty.

This may be more disastrous than Rule 6.10 instituted by the American League in 1973, which allowed for a designated hitter.
Part of the problem with box sets is that one could build a raft from them and escape the island

The original rules of 'Desert Island Discs' said eight gramophone records. I cannot recall what happened if a guest wanted to take a whole opera, for example. The rules were amended to 'eight pieces of music' and guest now do get to take an opera as one piece of music. I shall leave it to vandermolen to give you his interpretation ;D

Now that we know the
official rules, here are my eight works:
1. Beethoven:

4. Tchaikovsky:

8. Brahms:

I prefer marginally his Vienna 4th but for the island I'll need the 5th too and this is my favorite CD that couples the two symphonies.

8 single discs is tough! The Talich has 95, 127, & 133. I think it would be quite some time before I tired of all these.
Ack, I see we now must choose 8 pieces, not 8 discs. That's even harder, for my 8 discs above contain 21 pieces.
The ones I do not quite love yet may be my favorite in a few years. So I am not giving up ANY of my collection. Besides, my desert island is Australia! ;D

Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 - Bohm
Mozart Piano Concerto 22, Perahia

Screw those rules... long live the new rules:
8 picks from the shelf. This includes reasonable sized sets (of one work, but not box sets) of two, three, maybe even four discs. Doesn't include a ring Cycle, though... since that's four works.
Love Mahler, but Mahler has no business being on a Desert Island. I want to survive, not go crazy. I need to nurture the spirit, not attack it. ;)
I guess I accidentally picked 9. Well... we'll probably have to drop the Bruckner 5th, in that case.

I think I could manage to get a Ring to the island on a technicality. Although it's divided into four parts, Wagner envisioned it as a unified work, even giving it a name,
Der Ring des Nibelugen. And it can be bought complete, in one box. I might not get away with it, but I plan on trying ;D

Well, I love these Impromptus and the pieces in general. I think you recommended them to me :). But I rate Brendel and Edwin Fischer kind of at the same level.

I think it's a combination of sound and performance for me with the Pires set. Absolutely gorgeous!

If you like Handel that much then I doubt anyone will stand in your way should you include him in your desert island survival kit. :)
This' difficult. Barely made it down to dozen.

I have his Schumann in the 3 Biddulph issues. Excellent stuff!
What's the repertoire and transfer engineer for that Pearl release?
Kreisleriana, Davidsbundlertanze and Carnaval. Seth Winner.

Thanks.
I guess this will do for a first iteration. Too much orchestral, not enough chamber, though.

Second mention of that one. I just checked around and it seems only archiv has it (as a CD-R.) No torrents either. :-[
Now, if desert island is inhabited by GMG'ers, we'd have a pretty decent sized collection of excellent recordings!

Yeah, that and power supply, or we sure have a lot of pretty coasters!
I'd just try and make sure there's a performer on my desert island with me - a la Gilels. I'm sure he wouldn't mind playing for food...
