I knew I was still posting here for a reason. ;D
I'll listen to yours for a while ;)
You two should get a room.
This thread's fine; we've nothing to hide.
Unlike the racists among us $:)
What are you talking about, i never hid anything.
I go through that. I've been listening to classical somewhat exclusively for nearly a year now, prior to which I mightn't've been listening to it for a year. I can't remember, actually.

Indeed. Do you ever listen to non-classical anymore?

Only occasionally: Emmylou, the Dead, Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen. I've been in a classical mood for over a year now. I can't recall the last non-classical CD I bought...it must have been a very long time ago...oh, now I remember: a Jerry Garcia Band 3CD set last October.

I guess I don't find any one genre completely satisfying. I need all of them...apparently. ;D
I've been on a blues kick for about a week -- started off with lots of Muddy Waters, then jumped around to Lightning Hopkins, Sonny Boy Williamson (my wife: "what the HELL are you listening to?" ;D ), John Lee Hooker, Robert Cray, currently spinning one of those big anniversary sets from Alligator Records. I'll migrate back to classical fairly soon, though. I go through phases. :)

Yeah, me too. Right now I'm listening to a lot of old time music. At this minute, it's Grandpa Jones. :D
I did pick up the 1920's Mississippi John Hurt Okeh CD, BTW -- as you said, great stuff! I was surprised by how decent the sound was (and the fact that Borders had it on the shelf for six bucks). The only other blues of that vintage that I have is the old Robert Johnson boxset, which may be remastered too by now for all I know.
If I'm ever in Minnesota, we should have a beer :)

Glad you liked it. If you ever want to hear anyone else of that vintage, you may want to check out Blind Blake or Blind Willie McTell. Or Tampa Red. I like all those Piedmont-style guys.
And a beer sounds good. :)

I know what you mean. My cycles tend to span great swathes of time, though. When Morrison died (so soon after Joplin and Hendrix), I basically stopped listening to popular music. That lasted five years ;D Then when punk/new wave hit, I stopped listening to classical for three years. So it goes.

The new Bob Dylan album hits today so I'm going to be all about that at least for a little while. 8)
Yesterday, I dipped into some Rachmaninoff trios. George knows the recording I'm talking about. ;)
I think it's quite healthy to refresh your ears by listening to other genres of music.
So Dave, my last night in New Orleans a little over a week ago, I heard slide guitarist Jeremy Lyons & The Deltabilly Boys , i.e., Greg Schatz on doublebass and Paul Joseph Santopadre on drums. (Lyons moved from New Orleans to Boston after Katrina, but makes the occasional trip back.) Liked them so much I bought not one, but four of their CDs--all live performances including two taped at JazzFest in 2005 and 2006.

You would probably love these guys...just a Tuesday non-classical recommendation. :D

But right now I'm listening to Gram Parsons' Grevious Angel, so I guess there's hope.

Most of my non-classical phases only last a day or two, now. Haven't had one in a while. It's been driving my friends and family crazy. ;D
If you get the Bob Dylan album, tell me how it is. Penn Jillette (comedian) has been going bonkers raving about how great it is (on Twitter).

No, I did not. :)
I listened to pop and rock music from as early as I can remember (When I was three, I tried to play "Easter Parade" by putting the arm/stylus on the place on the label where it said "Easter Parade." I almost broke the record player, but my mother found me and instead of freaking out, showed me how to use it). She had a little Beethoven (symphonies and PCs), and this interesting record called the "Warsaw Concerto." Other than that, I didn't hear much classical music until I grew up and heard it in movies (Bach, Vivaldi in Woody Allen; Vivaldi in "Kramer v. Kramer"; Vivaldi in "All That Jazz").
Then in 1986, I was in a record store and heard Alfred Brendel playing Schubert's last piano sonata. I had to have it. The store (Olsson's in Georgetown, DC) was having a sale, 3 for $25, so I also bought Mozart's 23rd and 27th PCs (Brendel) and Beethoven's 9th by HVK. And I became this obsessive collector.
I've overcome it for the most part. I don't need all the versions. I've had lots of them, and I know I used to listen to about 3 percent of what I had. I settle on favorites, and the rest just sit on the shelves, lonely little discs.
I had a friend who bought so many CDs, I used to joke that the reason Serenade Records (also in Washington DC) closed was because my friend died the year before. Anyway, he only had time to listen to each CD once. The thrill was definitely in the hunt. I can't find fault, really. I inherited 1/5 of his collection.
Now I listen to classical most of the time, but I might someday, in the blink of an eye, switch over to some particular rock and roller, and classical will be on the shelf for a year or two. But I always come back to it.
Well, I just finished taking a semi-break from it for a while and got the bug again this weekend. Only with classical, I notice my cycles are usually long.
I'll see you guys around. I'm leaving GMG for a while...

Adieu Dave! 0:) Come back soon Wolfman! :)
I've been listening to way less classical music for the past three months or so. It's not that I need a break from it or anything, but having to be at work from 07:30AM to 11:00PM at night, I don't have a choice :-\
(Though I have begun to sneak in some Bach in the mornings much to the dismay of the staff >:D )
I'm not happy about it since I don't like missing something I love. But, at least, the good part is that I've discovered a lot of non-classical artists (particularly in the jazz arena) :-\
