Title: Violinist Vilde Frang
Post by: DavidRoss on July 05, 2009, 05:25:02 AM
From Gramophone:
QuoteEMI Classics has announced the signing of Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang. Her first release, scheduled for January 18 next year, features Sibelius's Violin Concerto and three Humoresques, in addition to Prokofiev's First Violin Concerto. The works were recorded live with the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln under conductor Thomas Søndergård

Are any of our Norwegian members familiar with Ms Frang?  (Or anyone else?)

Had her debut with the Oslo Philharmonic at age 12, won the Norwegian Solist Price in 2008 and have made a
quite a name for herself here, but I haven't heard her.

A short biography in English follows here:

We don't need another recording of Sibelius' Violin Concerto...unless it's great.

Have heard her do Schnittke's Moz-Art á la Haydn live with Marianne Thorsen and TrondheimSolistene. She can play all right. She's in Anne-Sofie Mutter's program for young soloists.

We don't. Really. But how is a young, emerging soloist to establish her credentials if she isn't allowed to do at least some of
the standards? A dilemma this, much as I would have loved a new, complete edition of Castelnuovo-Tedescos violin concertoes.

At least it's not coupled with the Tchaikovsky--again!  But I do have too many recordings of the Sibelius, most because I wanted the coupling.

I know Naxos recordings (or whatever other label might want a Castelnuovo-Tedesco edition ...  :D ) are not the best way to get international publicity, but they are still a great calling-card and resume booster. Plus Vilde Frang is not even 25 - there is plenty of time for her to become a star unless EMI thinks she would look cute on a CD cover.

Actually, at my university, the music performance majors are just about the least likely students to be ... maybe I've said too much   ;D
