Title: Need help on background of a Haydn piano sonata: no. 38, hob 23 in F major
Post by: MISHUGINA on August 25, 2009, 06:31:53 AM
Need to help my friend preparing this piece for her recital. There is very little information about this sonata and unfortunately from Google and library books, I could barely find anything. Can anybody let me know the year this sonata was written and some background information about it? Thanks a bunch.

I can tell you more when I get home, but right now I can tell you that it was composed/published in 1773. IIRC, it was released as part of a set of 6, thusly;

    * Sonata No. 36 in C major, Hob. XVI/21, 1773
    * Sonata No. 37 in E major, Hob. XVI/22, 1773
    * Sonata No. 38 in F major, Hob. XVI/23, 1773
    * Sonata No. 39 in D major, Hob. XVI/24, 1773
    * Sonata No. 40 in E-flat major, Hob. XVI/25, 1773
    * Sonata No. 41 in A major, Hob. XVI/26, 1773

They were written at and for Esterhazy, not for an outsider (like the later Auenbrugger  or Bossler sonatas. If you need to know more, let me know and I will get back to you this evening. :)
