I was in a record store yesterday (The Princeton Record Exchange) looking for bargains on Classical CDs and they were playing the first two albums of Procol Harum. I immediately loved it! I bought the CD, which includes their first four albums on two CDs.
Now I am wondering what other artists I missed out on from that time period. I also love Dylan, Traffic and Hendrix. Can you suggest some other bands along those lines?
The Doors, Jethro Tull.

I have heard much of The Doors but not of Jethro Tull. Which album(s)?
If you like Dylan, then you must hear Dylan's band, The Band. Music From Big Pink and The Band are essential. I assume you have Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde.
Others I would recommend to get a taste of the mid to late 60s:
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow (Somebody To Love, White Rabbit)
Santana - Abraxas (Black Magic Woman)
The Doors - The Doors (Break On Through, Light My Fire, The End)
The Doors - LA Woman (Riders on the Storm)
Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vidda
Vanilla Fudge - Vanilla Fudge (You've got to hear their Elenor Rigby ;D )
Spooky Tooth - The Last Puff (you've got to hear their I Am a Walrus ;D )
CSN - Crosby, Stills & Nash (Judy Blue Eyes)
CSN&Y - Déjà Vu (Woodstock, Teach Your Children)
Anything by the Byrds and Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Two great live albums:
The Grateful Dead Live/Dead
Jefferson Airplane - Bless It's Pointed Little Head

Thanks Sarge, which of your recommendations are on the lighter side of Rock?
I should have made it clear that this is what I am after. Sorry. :-\

I wasn't saying those were heavy, some of them I don't know. I'd just like more mellow rcok along the lines of Procol Harem. :)

Okay, let me refresh my memory by listening to Procol again. I'll be back.

from a slightly different angle, maybe :
Cream - Disraeli Gears

An overlooked San Francisco group; I have always preferred this band's work (especially their first two albums) to most other groups from that time. It is guitar dominated but lead guitarist John Cippolina's shimmering sound from the use of tremelo is unique.
