I have a relatively inexpensive digital camera in Kodak C875 and my long-term cameras have been the Contax RTS III with Zeiss Lenses and Leica M6 SE. I will probably get a Canon DSLR at some point ...
Saul - good topic! :D In my younger days, I use to be a Camera NUT! - had a number of SLR cameras w/ multiple lenses, tripods, flashes, etc. - guess that I lost my interest w/ the emergence of the digital camera age? :-\
Currently, I own an older Sony Cybershot (2.1 Mega pixel) - yes, an older model but the one I often take on the road for its small size and the fact that the image size is just fine for web use - do not like the Sony 'memory stick' since I need an USB adapter for uploading - not a big problem if I can find the adapter - ;)
My other 'digital' camera is a Canon PowerShot (S2IS) w/ a 5 Mega pixel image size - love the SD memory card since most computers accept that format w/ a dedicated slot; but the size is somewhat annoying, i.e. just larger and bulkier to pack on a trip!
Now, I would love to pick up a SLR digital camera (Canon & Nikon have been the options I've considered) - my son owns a Canon Rebel and loves it! Not sure at my age that I need to start investing in this technology? That OLD little Sony camera is the one I often use to upload pics to this site - this works fine! Dave :)
I have an Olympus E-510 with kit lenses I bought a couple of years ago. I'm very happy with it. I want to get a high quality pocketable camera, so I'm looking at a Canon S90. I shoot RAW, and process in Lightroom 2 with Photoshop CS2. I'll get into full frame when the prices and sizes come down.
I have a Canon PC-1251 that I'm very happy with. I'm even happier with the company. A couple of years back, the week before I was to leave on a vacation, the screen on my camera stopped working. I explained the situation to Canon and they fixed the camera at no cost under warranty and had it back to me in a couple of days so I could take it on my trip. Great customer service!

plus a Canon IXUS 40 for my pocket. My E-300 is over five years old now. I'll probably get a new camera by the end of the year. The Olympus PENs really appeal but I'm looking forward to new Olympus DSLRs too which are rumored to be coming some time around Photokina in September.
Saul, that Rebel is a fantastic camera (the kit lens not so fantastic) but be aware it seems to have (like many Canon DSLRs) focusing issues.

I would have preferred to stick with Contax had Kyocera/Yashica not pulled out of the DSLR market. Sony became a force mainly due to its opportunistic purchase of all the intellectual properties of Konica/Minolta a few years ago when the latter had fallen on hard times. I will probably end up with Canon. I have owned the stocks in the company for a number of years and my investments have done extremely well.
I'm happy that I paid a bit more to get the Nikon D90 when the time came to upgrade my D40 - I will never be demanding enough to require a professional-level camera, but this was a great balance between getting as much clarity and features as I needed (especially in low-light) and also price. The body feels slightly more comfortable for small hands than the more basic D40, and the layout and rangefinder are good. The video feature is useless, but fortunately I didn't expect to use that.

I've been using Pentax SLRs for about thirty years now, and have three film SLRs (an ancient, metal, made in Japan K1000, a ZX-5n, and a ZX-L) and two DSLRs (*ist-DL and K10D). I'll be upgrading to the K7 later this year if all goes well. I've got too many lenses and accesories to really make a switch to any other brand at this point. If I were to start over, and if I had an unlimited budget, I think I'd go for the high end Nikons - that D3s looks sweet, and those high end zooms like the 14-24 are impressive. I'd probably try sneak a Hasselblad digital in their somewhere too, but that's for dreams only.
I've also had a few point and shoots over the years as well, and still have a Leica point and shoot for film and a Canon, Samsung, and Vivitar (which was free) for digital, but I gave those to my kids, except for the Leica.
I have the S3 IS as well. It serves me well for most purposes, but I have wanted the flexibility and range of functions available in SLRs, especially when shooting night shots of the sky. However, it's been a long time since I went out and seriously shot things -- a year now, I think.

The video quality of this camera is below low, terrible.
But the photos are decent.
I think that the new camera from Olympus is superior to the Canon eos rebel.
