Title: Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 5
Post by: smitty1931 on March 27, 2011, 12:44:50 PM
As a long time fan of Rachmaninoffs music I was delighted to find this recording. It is the arrangement of his 2nd symphony by Alexander Warenberg.  It is so idiomatic that it sounds like Rachmaninoff himself wrote it. I understand some purists hated it. What is your opinion? I would love to see this composer take a stab at the 1st symphony.  Brillant Classic 8900

If I remember correctly, Rakhmaninov usually composed with 4 staves, as if writing for two pianos.  Then he orchestrated the music later, although one must imagine he already had some idea during the composing process as to which instruments would take which lines.

Do you know if Warenberg had access to the original sketches, or do they even exit?
