Title: Another TC member
Post by: Trout on January 02, 2012, 10:57:28 AM
I made this account a couple months back, but I haven't posted anything until today.

So, it's nice to find another classical music haven as they contain some of the nicest and well-educated people on the internet.  A brief introduction about my musical tastes and knowledge:  Late Romantic to early Contemporary music seems to be my sweet spot, though I do often revisit Beethoven, Bach, and Schubert.  R. Strauss, Mahler, Stravinsky, and Shostakovich are my main heroes with, occasionally, some Sibelius, Prokofiev, and Bruckner.  I am probably in an intermediate stage of listening where I have listened to most all of the 'basics' and now delving into some lesser-known composers, such as Nielsen, Martinu, and Busoni, as well as listening from the opposite end of the timeline (Medieval and Renaissance music).  I have also just started to listen to opera and I like what I have heard.  I am glad that I have time on my side, being quite young, to listen, learn, and explore.  However, I do not think that I can contribute much to this forum considering the immense musical knowledge of its members and the great emphasis on modern music (a field I have yet to thoroughly traverse).  I may post on occasion, but I do not think I have much to contribute at this point in time.  I do read many of the threads though as I learn a great deal from many of them.  Anyways, thanks for your time and I hope to see many of you around.  :)

Welcome to the forum, Trout!
(you saved yourself a lot of trouble with naming Mahler among your "main heroes" before Daniel, aka madaboutmahler arrived here)

How many years have you been listening to classical, then?

I think we are going to get along very well, Trout! As you can tell, Mahler is my hero! Which is your favourite of his symphonies? For me, I could not choose between 6 and 9. 7 would come very close as well... :) R.Strauss is another of my favourite composers, the Alpine Symphony being one of my favourite pieces.
So yes, Welcome! :)

Welcome! Hope you will enjoy the forum :)

You mentioned Beethoven, Mahler, R. Strauss and Shostakovich as your main heroes; so glad to hear this, they are four of my favourite composers too!  ;D But my absolute favourite is Richard Wagner, I hope you like his music as well.

My feelings, too - it doesn't matter how far along you are in your voyage, and I would bet you have many interesting impressions culled from your listening! (PS, your "sweet spot" is somewhat similar to mine.)

Anyway, welcome, Trout - hope you enjoy yourself here.

:o Are you sure we are not related?? The 6th and the 9th are among my favorites in addition to the 4th and Das Lied.  Eine Alpensinfonie is also my favorite Strauss piece and one of my all-time favorite pieces of music.

I know a Trout on an Emmylou Harris forum. You couldn't be him, could you? Nah, not likely  :D  In any case, welcome.

Thank you!

Coincidentally enough, my name is also Daniel  (following up on my previous post).  This is starting to get a little creepy...

You're welcome, Trout. I like all kinds of composers mainly from the 20th Century, but my favorites are (in no particular order): Koechlin, Bartok, Ravel, Villa-Lobos, Vaughan Williams, Prokofiev, Debussy, Berg, Revueltas, Szymanowski, Stravinsky, among others.

Welcome from another 'newbie' !
We may have a couple of things in common - firstly I'm also into late Romantic, early (but still tonal !) contemporary; secondly I have little/nothing to contribute but so much to learn.
Where we may possibly differ is that I'm now delving into 'unsung' composers,  finding it fascinating but hugely frustrating...far too much lovely, ignored music out there to ever get up to date !
Maybe there'll be something to chat about - meantime, enjoy !                Clive.
