What composer should I dig into with a new purchase tomorrow? And what work? :)
I just wanted to avoid the hammer.
Haydn (of course);
"The Heart of Invention" by the Trio Goya.

Very enjoyable.
8)
Shostakovich: The Golden Age. Not the ballet suite, the full work. I recommend this recording:

Yes, Haydn - if you don't already have it, this is a nice recording

Also available as d/l for $8.99
:)
A fantastic album:

I have been enjoying the symphonies of Alfven, I got a five disc set of his orchestral must conducted by Jarvis on Brilliant for £6. Lovely music, rather like Sibelius, but less austere. An individual voice, not challenging, but well worth exploring.

If there isn't a lot of Berlioz in your collection Dave I'd say get something like his Requiem or Romeo and Juliette. If you have those try this:

I protest at your use of the words 'bagpipes' and 'fart' in the same sentence. Kindly pipe down with that or I will have to burst you. :o :D

Well, Master Ubloobideega is lenient at times, and it doesn't matter too much. The original
Universe Fart Attack (op.1453a) is actually scored for a choir of 15 elephants and an evil, laughing, maniac, self-pleasuring baritone, who stares audience members in the eyes while touching himself.
Usually, op.1453d (the one for bagpipes) is performed on
future bagpipes, called "Penipes," named by someone in the future who had unusual thoughts about bagpipes... :-X the resulting style is referred to as "FAP," aka "Future-informed Artistic Performance."
Trust me, you don't want to know what the future pipes and bags look like...

You could buy a DVD set on how to draw Manga. lololol :D :D :D
I
STRONGLY suggest this.
Actually, nah, you can find free pdfs of How to Draw Manga... I still have Vol.1 of that series back in the days when they didn't have pdfs of everything floating around.

Do you really like bagpipes or is it just because your Scottish? Because I have Scottish blood in me, too! :D

Mate. That is a crazy thing to ask. Bring that Scottish blood of yours out to the front and you'll know why. The only people who don't like the bagpipes are one of two things:
a) Not Scottish.
b) Not Scottish.
Even if you are Scottish and you don't like the bagpipes, you are not Scottish. If you like the bagpipes and you're not Scottish, then you're Scottish. Of course I like the bagpipes. They are the sound under our feet.
PS Sorry about that, the manga post was for elsewhere and it ended up in here. I was in the wrong place when I posted it, and now I forgot where it was to be posted to. lolololol :-)

Gotcha :D
Non-Scot reaction to Mahler's 8th: holy cow this has like every music instrument imaginable, it's crazy!! :o
Scotsman reaction to Mahler's 8th: symphony of a 1,000 and no bag pipes!? ::) What a rip! ;D
Scottish avant garde composers are furiously composing atonal bagpipe pieces as we speak. ;D

And of course I must pedantically point out that Scotland isn't the only place to have bagpipes.

On these grounds, clearly you need to buy a disc that includes Peter Maxwell Davies'
An Orkney Wedding, With Sunrise.
See the last couple of minutes below for why:

I am a Scot and would pay good money not to have to listen to bagpipes....or the chanter.

But possibly the only to admit it.
I'm calling it a three way tie since they are so close and going with Haydn, Berlioz and Mahler. Won't buy until I'm home so feel free to inundate me with recs. :)
Mahler 5 (RCO/Chailly)
Mahler 6 (CSO/Solti)
Mahler 8 (Philharmonia/Sinopoli)
Mahler 9 Karajan
The top Mahler recordings I can think of at the moment. You probably have some of them that I mentioned anyway...

Oh yes, that Berlioz Requiem is a good'un. Spectacular sound, I enjoyed everything about this recording. The conductor surprised me, I would not have guessed it was his territory. He builds tension and splendour in the loud passages, but he equally shines in the many filigree, and gentle areas of the work.

I would emphatically recommend this release. Superlative on all accounts.
PS. The Hummel concerto disc mentioned above is also well worth seeking out.

Exactly, although in our countries we mostly try to forget it. :D
