No, it's not the desert-island Which one Haydn symphony would you choose never to be parted with? For it is an impossible question.
Which one Haydn symphony is represented in your collection by more recordings than any other?
Thank you in advance for taking sporting part.
#45 "Farewell"
...7 recordings. Eyeing an eighth.
100 and 104 are tied with 13 each:
Edit: I had Wöldike's 100 listed twice. So the uncontested winner is 104 with 13 versions (14 if we count the chamber version performed by Arco Baleno).

Ain't one, but eleven. Guess I'm more into sets than singles. I have 4 recordings of each of the Paris (82-7) and some of the London (93-5, 101-2) symphs.
Sarge, you need more Cats! : )
I'll have to count when I get home, but mine may well be #45 also. Most of my London's are in sets, so I don't have many singles of anything to pad out any one work. If I did, it would be #100... :)
8)
Much to my surprise (!) it was symphony no.94, of which I have at least 14 versions.
Szell, Cleveland
Zweden, NRCP
Hogwood, AAM
Monteaux, WPO
Goodman, Hanover Band
Salomon String Quartet (a string quartet version by Salomon)
Solti, CSO
Jochum, LPO
Davies, Concertgebouw
Karajan, BPO
Bernstein, NYPO
Dorati, Philharmonia Hungarica
Bruggen, OotEC
Fischer, AHHO
I thought it would be 96 or 101, because I tend to listen mostly to those two...

I know! When I read your original post, and before I looked at my CD list, I thought 99 might be the one I had the most of since I've bought quite a few recently. But I
only ( ;D ) have nine.

Just made it eight.
#93 is my favorite Haydn symphony but at last check, for some strange and unexplainable reason, I have ZERO recording of it.
Right now, I have four of 94, 100, 73 and ... which one is Da Bear?

#82, from the Paris set. It's a good 'un.
My winner is #94 as well, with 17 versions, nosing out #101 and #104 with 16 each.
Symphony no. 94 in G major A. Fischer; Austro-Hungarian Haydn O (Nimbus)
Symphony no. 94 in G major Beecham; Royal PO (EMI)
Symphony no. 94 in G major Bernstein; New York PO (Sony)
Symphony no. 94 in G major Bernstein; Vienna PO (Deutsche Grammophon)
Symphony no. 94 in G major Brüggen; Orchestra of the 18th Century (Philips)
Symphony no. 94 in G major C. Davis; Concertgebouw O (Philips)
Symphony no. 94 in G major Dorati; Philharmonia Hungarica (Decca)
Symphony no. 94 in G major Goodman; Hanover Band (Hyperion)
Symphony no. 94 in G major Jochum; London PO (Deutsche Grammophon)
Symphony no. 94 in G major Karajan; Berlin PO (Deutsche Grammophon)
Symphony no. 94 in G major Minkowski; Les Musiciens du Louvre (Naïve)
Symphony no. 94 in G major Monteux; Vienna PO (Decca)
Symphony no. 94 in G major Prague CO; no conductor (Supraphon)
Symphony no. 94 in G major Scherchen; Vienna SO (Deutsche Grammophon)
Symphony no. 94 in G major Slatkin; Philharmonia O (RCA)
Symphony no. 94 in G major Szell; Cleveland O (Sony)
Symphony no. 94 in G major van Zweden; Netherlands Radio CO (Exton)
My favorite of the 104+? Probably #44, if only for the gorgeous slow movement. I read somewhere that Haydn requested it to be played at his own memorial service - I think I would do the same, given the choice!
EDIT: Quite coincidentally, this is my 94th post ;D
Da Bear is numer 82, which seems to be the one I have the most recordings of (9), closely followed by hens, londons, morning and various surprises.
Right now the multi-disc set of Bruno Weil on Vivarte is my in-car listening fare for this week. That means more bears, hens, and surprises but alas, no morning !
Looks like #94 is a popular choice....
I have an even dozen: Fischer, Dorati, Jochum, Szell, Davis, Furtwangler, Bernstein, Solti, Beecham, Scherchen, Karajan & Harnoncourt.
No. 45.
Mine could be any one of the 6, 7 or 8. Often recorded and also easily could be my favorites.
;)

Wow, I had clean forgot I started this thread.
96, I suppose. And there's a reason 88 was very popular back in the day when it and a handful of the London symphonies were all that got recorded.
Luckily, nobody has to limit themselves to just 1 Haydn symphony. The Bernstein box will give you all the Paris and London symphonies and 88.

Fey/Schlierbacher Kammerorchester
Harnoncourt/Concentus musicus Wein
Fischer/Austro Hungarian-Haydn Orchestra
Liebreich/Munich Chamber Orchestra
Davies/Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra
Immerseel/Anima Eterna
My choice was #45, up to 11 recordings now. Although No.80 and 98 are a very close second/third.
probably 88 or one of the London symphonies, around 10. I might forget one in a box or anthology
10 88: Furtwängler, Scherchen, Szell, Bernstein, Dorati, Wolf, Rattle, Brüggen, Fey, Fischer
12 94: Furtwängler, Scherchen, Szell, Bernstein, Dorati, Jochum, Brüggen, Harnoncourt, Fey, Fischer, Hogwood, Herbig
of most of the London set I will have around 10 I guess.
Edit: These are more than I would have expected. Had I guessed without any counting (in my head at least) I would have said 7-8. Partly because I tend to discount the big Fischer box and only think about separate versions. Partly because I forget about several single discs. Because as complete London sets I "only" have Harnoncourt, Brüggen, Herbig, Scherchen (and Fischer in the complete box).
Pre-Paris it must be 45, but only about 7
45 Scherchen, Orpheus, Harnoncourt, Pinnock, Fey, Solomons, Brüggen

Zowie. Thanks.
Still a tie across the board, only now it's 23 symphonies tied at 1 recording each, instead of 12.
(* chortle *)
I have three of 104 and 100, two of 96 and 94 (and all of versions of these are in the Decca box), two of Morning, Noon, and No. 92 'Oxford'.
100 and 104 are tied.
Symphonies of which I have ten or more versions:
44 - 11
45 - 10
88 - 10
94 - 11
96 - 10
99 - 11
100 - 15
