Title: Which release of Gould's 1955 Goldberg Variations?
Post by: bluto32 on August 08, 2012, 02:15:17 PM
I'd like to buy a CD of Gould's 1955 Goldberg Variations. (I've heard the 1981 version online and don't like it much, so I am not considering the "State of Wonder" set with both 55 and 81.)
Browsing the usual online stores, I was surprised to find so many (re)issues. These appear to be the main recent ones:

This one from 2004 by Sony which has 2 extra tracks (fugues) plus outtakes:

This from 2007 by Sony "Glenn Gould Complete Jacket Collection" (Amazon shows a black back cover with no extras)

This from 2010 by Sony Originals (front cover looks like the one above, but Amazon shows a white back cover with 2 extra fugues)

And this from 2007 by Naxos Historical:

Does anyone know if the transfers are identical, or does one have better sound quality?

Thanks,
Bluto

The Naxos is definitely a different transfer, by Mark Obert Thorn. If I didn't already have the State of Wonder set, that's the one I'd get.

The one from 2004 and 2010 is identical, both used the DSD remastering from original mastertape and sound great, IMHO better than the one from 2007 (I think this is the reissued from 1992 release) and the one from Naxos (used LP )
