Hey fellow GMG'rs, I've really enjoyed my time on this forum, and because of this time I have had the fortune of meeting some truly friendly and inspirational people from all over this world. So I thought it's about time that I host my own thread here to share with you all some of my creations.
A little background...I studied music at George Mason University for several years, mainly focusing on history and education. Although I didn't finish with this degree, I never stopped studying. I've performed in middle school, high school and college in such various groups as jazz band (tenor sax) marching band (mellophone and trumpet) and orchestras (French horn), and even conducted my school wind ensemble for a senior solo, maybe one day that will make it's way on here ;).
I later studied film and television with a main focus in digital video. I would love to combine my knowledge of music into the videos I created. This of course has led to subjecting my son to become the lead of several shorts, he's now at the age where I can finally direct him to certain actions instead of just following a drooling, and spontaneous life form, but that did lead to some great stuff.
I've always dabbled in composing, it's been a hobby of mine since I began performing and studying music. I'm certainly an amateur, but recently was given the job of composing music for a children's app. So I can guess you could consider that my first professional gig. Anyway, I've been posting some of my music onto Sound Cloud, and would love to share it with you. Of course feel free to comment, any comments are welcomed, even if you feel the need to criticize.
If you've made it this far, then I thank you, I realize seeing lots to read before getting anywhere may not be the best marketing approach.
I'll start with the piece that means quite a bit to me right now, it's titled "The Passion of Beckett Zayd", and it's dedicated to my son. It began as a score to a short 5 minute film I made about my then almost 2-year old son. I thought it would be a challenge yet fun to write my own piece for the film. It has been revised and lengthened for listening without the video. This is the piece that more than likely got me the gig for the video game app.
I've used Finale Print Music to write the score, and used Garritan: Aria player for the sounds. Here is the link to it on Sound Cloud (I've noticed a little distortion from Sound Cloud, although it may be my speakers), and I hope you enjoy...

Greg! Thank you for starting your thread. Very interesting post which I enjoyed reading very much. I shall set aside some time this evening to listen to your piece, looking forward to it! :)
Greg, just listened to The Passion of Beckett Zayd and really enjoyed it very much! It's a really wonderful piece, with a great, memorable melody, and really delightful orchestration. From a harsh technical point of view, perhaps I would wanted it to change tonal centre a bit more often, but this doesn't really take away from my enjoyment of the piece.
Wonderful work, Greg! I look forward to hearing more of your work and reading more about it on your thread! :)

A very nice piece, Greg. Reminds me of the Simpsons; Homer sees his life fly by. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_3qlxBQnRY)

Greg - enjoyed your OP and listened to and enjoyed your composition - congrats! Dave :)
Thank you all for the feedback and kind words! ;D
Here is the title track to the app that I scored. The game is called "Peek-a-Boo Memory", It was created by NightCrew Gaming and is a memory card game for young kids, it's only on Droid at the moment but the Apple market is in the works. http://www.amazon.com/NightCrew-Gaming-Peek-a-Boo-Memory/dp/B008VZJIEA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1349655664&sr=8-1&keywords=peek-a-boo+memory
So here is another link to my Sound cloud page for "Peek-a-Boo", it's scored for percussion and once again uses the Aria player sounds.

Greg, I had no idea you composed music. Very cool and a nice work you posted here. Has a Minimalistic feel to it and given your admiration of composers like Glass and Nyman, it doesn't surprise me. ;) Anyway, keep up the good work!

Here is another track from the game, this one is called "Memory", I originally wrote it with a baroque ensemble in mind but eventually changed the instrumentation to better fit the game's atmosphere.

Here is a recent composition titled "Elegy" for strings. This particular version used Aria Player sounds Violin(x2), Viola, Cello and Bass. I used solo string sounds instead of section strings, although the original intent was for a larger string ensemble.
It's a much darker piece than I am used to writing. There are several themes repeated throughout, the opening of Elegy finds itself desperately reaching out only to fall back down. A louder, more triumphant theme is introduced only to be silenced by a third theme with the violin carrying the melody, this third theme is balancing between hope and despair, searching for its proper home. The cello begins a repeated set of notes that slowly builds to an intense climax that merges, at times chaotically, all the previous melodies and themes. The piece once again falls to despair with a solo violin left all alone, giving out one last breath, one last word, with an unknown resolution.

Nice piece, Greg; good tone, good arc.
It's Halloween!!!! >:D 8) :P ;)
Here is my Halloween track that will accompany the first Seasons version of the Peek-a-Boo Memory app. I had fun with this one, it needed to be a small file size for the app, so it's a bit short but I may revisit it in the future and expand on it, or maybe not.

I've really enjoyed Elegy although it makes me wonder how it would sound with something a little meatier than the Aria Sounds.. could I possibly ask you for a snippet of the MIDI score, if you have it available? I'd try to load it up into the East West software I'm using and see what it does. I obviously understand if you don't want to let your music into the dirty hands of a stranger so do feel free to tell me to piss off.
In any case, good stuff you've got here. Listening to Romance right now, lovely interplay between the two instruments.

Rinaldo, I appreciate the response and I greatly apologize for the delay. I honestly didn't see your post.
I would never tell you to piss off, I wouldn't mind posting my score or having it available but it needs to be cleaned up a bit. in order to get the dynamics and interpretation I wanted I really had to tinker with the score a bit.
I'll get back to you on it. :)
Thanks again for listening!

Two new tasks: Write a Trombone quartet (an unofficial commission from my brother) and have six days to write a festive sounding piece for the Peek-a-boo Memory App's second seasonal free download, this one is a holiday theme.
The T-Bone quartet is slow going at the moment, been having opening-bars block. And was just given the assignment of another piece for the App yesterday. I started it today and already have 1:12 on score with around 3:00 being my goal. Perhaps the upbeat, optimistic sounding Peek-a-Boo piece will inspire me to get rolling on the T-Bone quartet.
I'll post these when I've completed them for your listening pleasure. I truly enjoyed all the comments I received from my first batch of postings.
Cheers, friends. 8)

Made some revisions on two of my previous compositions, "A Romance" - sped up the opening section, and added some more characteristics to the clarinet part, even a few more breath marks for more realism. "Passion for Beckett Zayd" changed the Oboe to English Horn, a little more subtle and realistic sounding, and added a few more lines for it towards the end. Also adjusted some of the dynamics. And my final version of "Holiday" is available now, it's featured on the new Holiday version of "Peek-a-Boo Memory" app.

Hey, Daniel. Haven't anything new. Waiting on another commission from the same company I wrote for last year. They have some new games/apps in the pipeline.
Trying to work on a few original pieces, been too busy from Nov through New Years at my job, but things have quieted down lately which is good. And the starting of a new piece is the most challenging phase for me, I have a dozen or so 2-pagers that I've trashed.
Keep up the good work yourself, my friend!

Been a while since I've posted on here, I have some new music that I finally uploaded to SoundCloud.
Just completed a Waltz, in about 3 days time, as usual the most difficult aspect is getting realistic sounds and dynamics from the Garritan sounds, for the most part I am pleased.

One thing I've always enjoyed doing since my son was born was making home movies, and getting creative with them. I've done about 5-6 movies, and have composed the music for a few of them. It's been almost a year and a half since my last one, so a new one was over due. I make these for my own enjoyment, but mostly for my family who is spread out all over the country, it gives them something they can look at repeatedly like a photo album. Our recent trip to Myrtle Beach gave me some great opportunities for some video footage. I shot the video from my iPhone 4S (720p HD is available on YouTube) and used iMovie to edit. The music is presented through Garritan Aria Player. I've also included the YouTube link and the SoundCloud link to my page that I included the music to. I hope you enjoy! ;D

Greg,
I just spent some time listening to your music making that you've posted to Soundcloud and must say it's very captivating. Movements - for Trombone Quartet starts out very Philip Glass (Koyaanisqatsi: Pruit Igoe) and transforms itself into a very Bachian feel. The rest of your music that I listened to: Imaginary Dinner, On the Beach, The Passion of Beckett Zayd and Elegy for Strings had, in the best way possible, a strong flavor of Ray Lynch and Karl Jenkins' more melodic pieces. I loved the stark pining and dark aloneness of Elegy, with just a ray of hope's sunshine to trace its arc. On the Beach has strong hints of Glass' Trilogy Sonata. All very original, yet harkening to their influences.
Keep composing and developing your art; it is very human and it reaches. And that reaching is truly all a creator of art can hope for.

Thank you very much for the kind words, inspiration and more importantly, for listening, Rick. I really do appreciate it. :)
I've been listening Ray Lynch since Deep Breakfast was originally released in the 80s, so it's easy to say there is some influence there. In fact, Imaginary Dinner was my attempt at creating a work similar to that of Lynch. And also Glass, another influence on me.
Go, dude, go!
