..everybody. Just a few words of introduction; I am in my late 40s, historian by education and dilletant in the wonderful world of classical music. I have been lurking for a while, and am quite impressed of the knowledge most of you possess. So I am joining this illustrous community mostly for learning, even if I hope that I will be able to contribute in a constructive manner once in a while.

Then again, he may end up like John and changes his avatar more often than I used to change girlfriends!

Ha! I'm not longer the king of the changing avatars. That honor goes to Leo K. :) My Delius avatar is here to stay.
Thank you, everybody.

Composers... Quite a few, but preferably the three great from the Classical Era, Schubert and as the venerable Sergeant observed, Bruckner. The last mentioned I grow more and more fond of the older I get.
Works: To many to mention, but Bruckner's 8th symphony would be my desert island composition. In general I prefer instrumental music and in particular symphonies.
Artists: I have tremendous respect for people like Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Franz Brüggen, Günter Wand and a lot of others.

I did consider using an Überstürzter Neumann, but having chosen this one I think I will stick with it for a while...
I just honestly had to Google Überstürzter Neumann ???.
Could be worse, you could have started with your child's Sock Monkey doll as an avatar,
only to get accosted every time you try to change it. ;) ;D
Anywho, greetings and welcome, good friend. Post proudly and often! 8)

Excellent choices :).
How far back, and ahead, chronologically (and geographically, seeing that you only listed Germans/Austrians), do your tastes reach?
Welcome aboard! I, too, am a huge fan of Bruckner's music. Enjoy your time here. 8)

Thanks, my friend. About posting, I am not necessarily the most active, at least not yet.

Oh, I am also fond of Baroque, also the early one. And while it seems to me that most great composers had German as their mother tongue I do find some time to other Europeans as well.

And a fine choice! The Eighth is a piece I seek out - and occasionally travel for - so I can well identify. I'm hearing it in a few weeks at Carnegie Hall, with Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden.

That must really be something to look foreward to. :) For my own part I will have to stick to my CDs for a while, I am afraid...

Thanks. My wife and I spent our summer vacation in Vienna last year. Lovely city indeed. We are planning to visit it again in August.

By 'the early one', do you mean early Baroque, or early music, before Baroque?
How about after Bruckner? Do you listen to more recent stuff, e.g. Mahler, Schönberg, Hartmann, or even Stockhausen?

Thank you! :) Ditto, nice avatar. Bruckner is my favourite symphonic composer.

Mostly early Baroque. I don't listen much to Renaissance music these days.
As for post Bruckner. I am quite fond of the second Vienna school. I have a decent collection of Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Martinu, Bartok, Enescu, Schnittke to mention a few. But the day only have 24 hours and in this period of my life, I have partly for personal reason chosen to direct my attention mostly to those mentioned in my OP. That doesn not at all mean that other music does not interest me or that I have anything else than respect for other composers I don't listen to.
Which in particular goes for Mahler. I understand that he is one of the titans in music history, I have made an attempt to appreciate him, but so far I just don't get him I am afraid...

Great choices there, all among my favourites :) (apart from Schnittke, whose music I don't know by much more than reputation. I don't know much Enescu, either, but like very much e.g. the 3rd VS).
Good to see love for the 2nd Viennese School, too.
I certainly understand concentrating on smaller parts of the repertoire, there is way too much great music for anyone to discover all of it in one lifetime.
You'll certainly find company here for discussing anything related to those composers listed, and there can't be too many recordings of their music that no-one here has heard.
Hello, welcome, and have fun!
