This is indeed a sad message. I am happy that his Russian Orthodoxy was always a strength for him. May he rest in the arms of angels.

I never knew John Tavener was of recent ill health, although he looked very frail on a recent arts documentary.

BBC Music Magazine (December's) cd features Isserlis/Rozhdestventsky performing his Protecting Veil, I listened to this only yesterday, a really beautiful, gorgeous work.

R.I.P

Think he has been ill for some time.
Classic fm are playing the Protecting Veil at 8 tonight, presumably the Virgin studio release by Isserlis/Rozhdestventsky rather than the proms one from BBC Music magazine.

R.I.P indeed

Sad news indeed (it deservedly featured on the main BBC TV News tonight). Just played 'Song for Athene' in tribute - a wonderful and deeply moving work, played at Princess Diana's funeral. I also listened to 'The Protecting Veil' which accompanied the latest BBC Music Magazine. Sad as the issue was leading up to Tavener's 70th Birthday celebrations, which are now not to be. I got him to sign my programme years ago when 'The Whale' was played at a British Music Festival in London. I recall him as being very pleasant when I expressed my admiration for the work. The Whale is an absolute hoot. Tavener was not amongst my very favourite British composers but I was very sad to hear this news today. 'The Best of John Tavener' (CFP) is a fine CD compilation of his music. RIP

I'm not fond of his music but it's never good to hear of a composer's passing. May he rest in peace.
