Gerard Mortier died on March 8th in Brussels (aged 70).
He held the posts of artistic director at La Monnaie in Brussels, the Salzburg Festival and the Paris Opéra. He had been appointed to the same position at the New York City Opera in 2007, but resigned before taking on the job. He was artistic director of the Teatro Real in Madrid from 2010 until last September.
One of the most important and influential figures in the European opera scene of the past 30 years...
