Poll
Question: Which of these two recordings of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto no. 1 do you prefer ?
Option 1: Horowitz / Toscanini / NBC SO - 19 April 1941 (studio)
Option 2: Horowitz / Toscanini / NBC SO - 6/14 May 1941 (studio)
Option 3: Horowitz / Toscanini / NBC SO - 25 April 1943 (live)

Now this for a probable heated debate and a really problematic choice.

I listened again to both today. And I have to admit the choice is really much less simple than I previously thought.

Here are recordings 2 and 3:

Personally I would go for

>:D

Seriously,  "historical" recordings do not usually cut it for me, especially those prior to 1950.  The sonics take too much away to let any musical virtues come through, and I end up thinking them no better than half a dozen other newer recordings.

I remember liking live 1941 more than studio 1941. Live one being 19.04.1941.

Don't think I ever heard 1943.

OK I understand what you're saying, but this was really about the two three Horowitz / Toscanini performances... I'd not even go with Horowitz if we talked about the general discography of the concerto ;)

Crap, I forgot about the 1941 live one. I'm adding it.
But thanks of course, this means I get to listen to a third version (just have to find where I put it...)
It does not seem to be available on Youtube though...
